Dancing Down Under
After Montréal and Québec (DD08), Central Europe (DD10), Northern Europe (DD12), Asia (DD14) and the United Kingdom (DD16), this twelfth edition of December Dance focuses on the contemporary dance landscape of Australia!
Under the title ‘Dancing Down Under’, we present the best of our antipodes’ dance scene, featuring new creations by internationally renowned choreographers (Garry Stewart, Lucy Guerin, Anouk van Dijk, Meryl Tankard and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui), but also projects and artists that have a unique voice (Chunky Move, Dancenorth, Serge Aimé Coulibaly and Marrugeku). We naturally also offer opportunities to up-and-coming creators (Nicola Gunn, Melanie Lane, James Batchelor, Luke George and Daniel Kok). And as always there is room for a wealth of context activities. We close with an impressive homegrown family show.

Heaven on earth
‘Why do you stand here looking into the sky?’ the angel told the astonished apostles after the Ascension of Jesus. Man is naturally inclined to seek the divine, and the Bible gives us a clear pointer: Jesus is the link. In this Bach Academy everything revolves around the relationship between heaven and earth, between the believers and their Saviour, at Ascension and Pentecost: with cantatas, concerti and cinematographic creations; with stars to worship and talent to discover; and of course with Collegium Vocale Gent and Philippe Herreweghe.

The slower the experience, the more intense the memory
From Friday evening to Sunday evening: slowing down with art
During SLOW(36h), we give you 36 hours to stop and pause. In a society that is constantly rushing forward, we stroll and stop. Follow your intuition and forget the clock: experience ‘time’ as ‘duration’, get maximum enjoyment from minimal resources, stride through the city resolutely but slowly and bring yourself into a trance through the repetition of mystical Moroccan Sufi music or Simeon ten Holt’s Canto ostinato. SLOW(36h) massages the senses and - who knows – may even lead to spiritual experiences.

The universe encapsulated in sound and image
Unearthly beauty and astonishing experiences in music, dance, science and visual art
In this cosmic season, we spend two weeks reflecting intensely on the beauty and power of our universe. NASA images are provided with breathtaking orchestral music. A Baroque vision of the elements is juxtaposed with a dance performance, in which the live sounds of the universe guide six percussionists and four dancers through space. With his life's work The United Planets, artist Karl Van Welden takes a central place, as does Arne Deforce, who takes a trip through space in his latest creation. In every case, the analogy between music and the cosmos is what predominates. That correlation inspires musician Arne Deforce and our new Season’s Thinker Thomas Hertog – a cosmologist at KU Leuven and, until his recent death, a close friend and colleague of Stephen Hawking - to search together for connections between music and science. From analogue to digital: brace yourself for a present-day harmony of the spheres!

Romantic Symphonies
The orchestral musician of the 21st century is perfectly at home in a wide variety of styles. That is why Iván Fischer presents his musicians with composers as diverse as Mozart, Rossini, Bartók and Mahler. Time after time this Budapest-based orchestra surprises us with its stylistic sincerity. In this mini-festival the orchestra smoothly traverses the course laid out for it by Schubert, Rossini and Bruckner. Eminence grise Emanuel Ax presents his response in Mozart. The intention? To bring the beauty of classical music to all ages and to all levels of society, to bring people closer together. And that coincides very nicely with the mission of the Concertgebouw!
