As protests against police violence and white supremacy swept away dozens of longstanding memorials to the Confederacy this summer, a year-old monument on the courthouse lawn in Lake Charles, La. On Thursday, Hurricane Laura tore the statue atop it down. Lewis said on Thursday, until residents turned their attention to preparing for one of the strongest hurricanes ever to hit the region. The monument was the object of anger and protests after the killing of George Floyd , a Black man, by the police in Minneapolis. But two weeks ago, the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, an elected body that acts like a county board of commissioners and has jurisdiction over the courthouse property, voted 10 to 5 at a special meeting to keep it. Lewis said. The statue has come down several times before — including in a storm, just three years after it was erected — but has always been restored. In it was blown off and repaired, despite protests from some local residents, including a district judge, who turned their backs as the soldier was returned to the pedestal. Was Hurricane Laura actually as powerful and destructive a storm at landfall as predicted? It is surprisingly difficult to answer this question with precision. Storms are rated by their maximum sustained winds, which the National Hurricane Center defines as the average wind speed over a one-minute period. Maximum gusts will be higher, but they last just a few seconds. The center reports that Laura made landfall with maximum sustained winds of miles an hour, at the high end of the Category 4 range. Yet nothing like that was measured on land. The strongest readings were at Lake Charles, La. It goes by the maximum sustained winds anywhere in the storm — but very few locations are actually measured, and measurements taken on land tend to be lower because the solid, bumpy land surface slows the air down, compared with the flat, fluid ocean.

Opening on July 1, 1990, TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX: 1935-1965 traces three key decades in the history of the studio, celebrating the talents of the artists on both sides of the cameras who shaped this period. The exhibition continues through September 11. Formed in 1915, the Fox Film Corporation merged in 1935 with the much younger Twentieth Century to launch a major new studio. Under the supervision of Darryl F. Zanuck, Twentieth Century Fox developed a new house style, emphasizing epic biographies such as John Ford's The Prisoner of Shark Island (1936) and Allan Dwan's Suez (1938) and snappy urban pictures such as Sidney Lanfield's Hake Up and Live (1937) and Roy Del Ruth's Thanks a Million (1935). The studio also featured such fresh screen personalities as Tyrone Power, Alice Faye, and Shirley Temple. These films share a number of stylistic conventions which include the use of various permutations of stereotypical bad girl/femme fatale and good girl/household nun (Martin 207) type characters. In most of these films, women and their sexuality are considered to be (as Freud believed) “ a dark continent” (Breger 331), symbolically “Other” (Leitch 1283), outside the norm, therefore not ‘normal.’ This phallocentric bias permeates film noir (as well as most film up until that point, and since,) and “reflects the normal status of women within contemporary society” (Harvey 38). However, due to noir’s topsy-turvy nature, where contradictions, nightmares, narrative disconnects, and role reversals abound, “the normal representation of women as the founders of families undergoes an interesting displacement” (38). This displacement came about in society and film noir in part as a reaction to the horrifying effects of World War II on America and the survivors of the Nazi terror.

Krim, President of United Artists. and Richard Griffith, Curator of the Museum1 s Film Library, The retrospective series will begin April 8 through Ik, daily at 3 p.m., with Dead End (1937), starring Sylvia Sidney, Joel McCrea, and Humphry Bogart, and Memphis Belle (19^*0 > produced by the War Department. With daily showings at 3 and 5:30, the series will continue April 15-21 with Jezebel (1938), with Bette Davis, Henry Fonda, Donald Crisp and Fay Baintei April 22-28, Wuthering Heights (1939), witn Merle Oberon, Laurence Olivier, Geraldine Fitzgerald, David Niven and Flora Robson; and April 29-May 5, The Westerner (19U0), t with Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan.
