Project Description: The Bristlecone Recreation Area at 9,886 feet in Great Basin National Park was constructed almost 50 years ago and has seen minimal changes or upgrades over the life of the project. Great Basin proposes to: convert the underutilized amphitheater into a day-use picnic area; upgrade the trailhead and improve signage, wayside exhibits, and kiosks; reconstruct the parking area to improve accessability; reconstruct theSummit Peak Trail System and trailhead; reconstruct the water line to comply with Nevada State Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) requirements; the half mile Accessible Island Forest Nature Trail will be upgraded. This proposal corrects a variety of impacts to natural resources due to increased visitation and engages visitors protecting the resources of the area.

Location: The project is in the Upper Carson Slough (UCS) of the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Nye County, Nevada. The UCS makes up approximately one-third of the more than 24,000 acre refuge, and is the refuge’s primary drainage system

Project Description: The Fish and Wildlife Service, Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, will restore Cold Spring, construct the UCS backcountry trail system, and improve the Longstreet & Fairbanks Springs Road (LFSR) and the Peterson Reservoir Road (PRR).

Primary deliverables of the Cold Spring restoration include: 1. restore two spring pools, 2. reconst the stream channel, and 3. remove of man-made irrigation ditches and berms.

Primary deliverables for construction of the UCS backcountry trail system are: 1. construction of 9.24 miles of earthen trails; 2. construction of three scenic overlooks; 3. construct one parking area; 4. construct six spring crossings; 5. install wayfinding and interpretive panels and signs; and 6. construct one vault toilet.

Primary deliverable for the LFSR and PRR roads is: 1. improve 9.61 miles of native surfaced/gravel roads.

Project Description: Construct a new grade control structure in the Lower Las Vegas Wash, below the Northshore Road Bridge, to address head cutting that could adversly affect the bridge. The purpose of the grade control structures is to reduce flow velocities and erosion potential by flattening the channel slope and dissipating energy. This will be the fifth structure constructed. If the lake levels remain low or lower, additional grade control structures will be needed.

Project Description: The Lower Lehman Campground in Great Basin National Park was built in the mid-1920s as part of the U.S. Forest Service “Operation Outdoors” initiative. Lower Lehman Campground at 7,338 feet in elevation, along the historic Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive, is the only campground in the park open year round. Within the last 10 years, five of the six campgrounds in the park have undergone reconstruction, modernizing the amenities and improving access. Lower Lehman Campground will be the last to be reconstructed and upgraded. The plan is to relocate three sites that are in a riparian meadow, rehabilitate the area and relocate them to another location. An additional 11 units will be added and 8 units reconstructed, bringing the total units to 22.
