  • Interpretations of the Ottoman Urban Legacy in the National Capital Building of Sofia (1878-1940)
Interpretations of the Ottoman Urban Legacy in the National Capital Building of Sofia (1878-1940) Elitza Stanoeva Introduction In the first decades of Bulgaria's independence from the Ottoman Empire (1878), an aftermath of the Russo-Ottoman War of 1877-1878, the projected national identity of Bulgarians was shaped by the desire for 'de-Ottomanization' and 'Europeanization'. The ideological need to anchor the newly gained nationhood in European modernity went hand in hand with the zeal to distance the national identity from the Ottoman past by obliterating its traces in the inherited material and social world. In the ensuing anti-Ottoman casuistry, the interchangeable concepts of 'Oriental' and 'Ottoman' became bywords for 'underdeveloped' and virtually anti-modern. Sofia became Bulgaria's national capital in March 1879, one year after the country's liberation from the Ottoman Empire. That rendered the processes of urban development subservient to state formation. The result was that the enforcement of a representational physiognomy of the national capital coupled with the symbolic reinforcement of national sovereignty. However, the programmatic prerogatives of de-Ottomanization were rather a political allure than guidelines of a rationally conceived urbanist agenda. The 'Oriental' characteristics of the built environment and the lifestyles of inhabitation were an outcome of five-century-long development under the reign of the Ottoman Empire (1382-1878). As such, they were perceived as structural ingredients of a detested external domination, the materialized memory of which had to be effaced. In the conditions of Bulgaria's partial sovereignty as an autonomous country yet a tributary principality of the Ottoman Empire (1878-1908), this symbolic subversion of history was a highly loaded political project.

  • Christ Church: Our History
CHRIST CHURCH: OUR HISTORY lthough there has been an Anglican priest in Vienna, acting as honorary chaplain to the British ambassador and ministering to the Anglican resident community, at least since the late 17th century, there has only been a permanent building since 1877. Previously, services were held in the British Embassy from 1831 untilA 1874, on Schenkenstrasse, and later demolished to make way for the new Burgtheater, thereafter in the new purpose-built British Embassy in the Metternichgasse. From the middle of the 19th century, there was a considerable increase in size of the British community living in Vienna, due especially to the establishment of ever more British businesses in Vienna as a result of closer economic ties between Great Britain and Austria. Following the building of the new Embassy, it soon became apparent that an Anglican church in Vienna was also required. The establishment of a permanent place of worship for the British community was proposed to the Austrian Government in 1874 by the British Ambassador, Sir Andrew Buchanan, but the plan was initially thwarted by a political obstacle. In 1855, Pope Pius IX had concluded a Concordat with Austria, guaranteeing the prime recognition and privileges of the Roman Catholic Church throughout the Austrian Empire (and thereby maintaining a certain influence on Austrian politics). By 1870, however, following Italian unification, the Vatican had lost most of its temporal power in Italy and was attempting to increase its authority outside its limited sphere. The Austrian Emperor, Franz Joseph, objected to this and, in 1874, Confessional Laws were passed annulling the Concordat of 1855 and regulating the relations of the Roman Catholic Church with the State.

When I first found out that I am going to take part in the 22nd meeting of the workshops for the implementation of the Council of Europe landscape convention “Water, landscape and citizenship in the face of global change” I have thought a long time which topic exactly to choose, because Bulgaria is rich of its mineral springs, the most of them are part of the Bulgarian balneo and spa tourism, the country is also famous with many rivers, lakes and The Black Sea. Two of the borders of my country are water borders – in the north is river Danube - it divides almost fully Bulgaria from Romania and our east border is The Black Sea. The big water landscapes have influence over the Bulgarian economy, climate, and the development of my country.
