Abstract: The lethal and enzymatic activities of venom from Naja sumatrana (Equatorial spitting cobra) were determined and compared to venoms from three other Southeast Asian cobras (Naja sputatrix, Naja siamensis and Naja kaouthia). All four venoms exhibited the common characteristic enzymatic activities of Asiatic cobra venoms: low protease, phosphodiesterase, alkaline phosphomonoesterase and L-amino acid oxidase activities, moderately high acetylcholinesterase and hyaluronidase activities and high phospholipase A2. Fractionation of N. sumatrana venom by Resource® S cation exchange chromatography (GE Healthcare, USA) yielded nine major protein peaks, with all except the acidic protein peak being lethal to mice. Most of the protein peaks exhibit enzymatic activities, and L-amino acid oxidase, alkaline phosphomonoesterase, acetylcholinesterase, 5’-nucleotidase and hyaluronidase exist in multiple forms. Comparison of the Resource® S chromatograms of the four cobra venoms clearly indicates that the protein composition of N. sumatrana venom is distinct from venoms of the other two spitting cobras, N. sputatrix (Javan spitting cobra) and N. siamensis (Indochinese spitting cobra). The results support the revised systematics of the Asiatic cobra based on multivariate analysis of morphological characters. The three spitting cobra venoms exhibit two common features: the presence of basic, potentially pharmacologically active phospholipases A2 and a high content of polypeptide cardiotoxin, suggesting that the pathophysiological actions of the three spitting cobra venoms may be similar. -

The successful planning and implementation of the census activities, followed by the timely release of the provisional results in August 2014 and now the main results in May 2015, is a clear testimony of the Government’s resolve to publish all information collected from respondents in accordance with the Population and Housing Census Law No. 19 of 2013. It is now my hope that the main results both Union and each of the State and Region reports will be interpreted correctly and will effectively inform the planning and decision-making processes in our quest for national and sub-national development. The census structures put in place, including the Central Census Commission, Census Committees and officers at the State/Region, District and Township levels and the International Technical Advisory Board (ITAB), a group of 15 experts from different countries and institutions involved in censuses and statistics internationally, provided the requisite administrative and technical inputs for the implementation of the census. -

Fibrinogenolytic toxin from Indian monocled cobra (Naja kaouthia) venom CCHANDRA SEKHAR and DIBAKAR CHAKRABARTY* Department of Biological Sciences, Birla Institute of Technology and Science–Pilani, KK Birla Goa Campus, Zuarinagar, Goa 403 726, India *Corresponding author (Fax, +91-832-255-7033; Email, [email protected], [email protected]) A fibrinogenolytic toxin of molecular weight 6.5 kDa has been purified from the venom of Indian monocled cobra (Naja kaouthia) by repeated cation exchange chromatography on CM-sephadex C-50. The purified toxin did not show any phospholipase activity but was mildly hemolytic on human erythrocytes. This toxin, called Lahirin, cleaved fibrinogen in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The digestion process apparently started with the Aα chain, and gradually other lower-molecular-weight chains were also cleaved to low-molecular-weight peptides. The fibrinolytic activity was completely lost after treatment with ethylene di-amine tetra acetic acid (EDTA). However, exposure to 100°C for 1 min or pre-treatment with phenyl methyl sulfonyl fluoride (PMSF) did not affect the fibrinolytic activity. Cleavage of di-sulphide bonds by β-mercaptoethanol or unfolding the protein with 4 M urea caused complete loss of activity of pure Lahirin. Many artisanal and small-scale gold mines were noted sincelast three decades. Gold mineralization is mainly hosted in marble and occasionally observed in gneiss.Host rocks chemistry is mainly controlled by hydrothermal activities and regional metamorphism. The compatible elements of host rocks are relatively more mobile than incompatible elements during alteration and deformation. Variety of plutonic rocks such as leucogranite, syenite and biotite granite are intruded into older metamorphic rocks. In ACF diagram, leucogranite and syenite are placed in S-type granite field and biotite granite occupied in I-type granite field. Mineralization is observed as fracture filling vein and less amount of disseminated nature in marble unit. Mineralogically, gold areassociated with other base metal such as pyrite, galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite. -
Russell's Viper (Daboia Russelii) in Bangladesh: Its Boom and Threat To

ABU SAEED2 1Department of Zoology, University of Chittagong, Chittagong, Bangladesh 2 555, Kazipara, Mirpur, Dhaka-1216, Bangladesh Abstract The occurrence of Russell’s viper (Daboia russelii Shaw and Nodder 1797) in Bangladesh is century old information and its rarity was known to the wildlife biologists till 2013 but its recent booming is also causing a major threat to human life in the area. Recently it has been reported from nine districts (Dinajpur, Chapai Nawabganj, Rajshahi, Naogaon, Natore, Pabna, Rajbari, Chuadanga and Patuakhali) and old records revealed 11 districts (Nilphamari, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Chapai Nawabganj, Rajshahi, Bogra, Jessore, Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat and Chittagong). Thus altogether 17 out of 64 districts in Bangladesh, of which Chapai Nawabganj and Rajshahi are most affected and 20 people died due to Russell’s viper bite during 2013 to 2016. Its past and present distribution in Bangladesh and death toll of its bites have been discussed. Its booming causes have also been predicted and precautions have been recommended. Research on Russell’s viper is deemed necessary due to reemergence in deadly manner. Key words: Russell’s viper, Daboia russelii, Distribution, Boom, Panic, Death toll Introduction Two species of Russell’s viper are known to occur in this universe of which Daboia russelii (Shaw and Nodder 1797) is distributed in Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka (www.reptile.data-base.org); while Daboia siamensis (Smith 1917) occurs in China, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan and Cambodia (Wogan 2012). -

Artisanal and small-scale gold operations started here three decades ago on gold mineralization hosted in marble and gneiss. Mineralization occurs as fracture-filling veins of several types: gold-bearing quartz vein, base metal quartz-carbonate vein, and carbonate base metal sulfides vein. Three types of hydrothermal alteration zones develop from the proximal to distal zone of hydrothermal conduit: silicic, sericite-illite and propylitic alteration. Alteration mineral assemblages consist of quartz, calcite, sericite, adularia, epidote, chlorite, illite and smectite which are typical of neutral pH hydrothermal fluid. The presence of adularia and calcite within veins indicate boiling event of near-neutral pH condition. Common vein textures of quartz and calcite are banded, crustiform, bladed calcite, lattice, mosaic or jigsaw, cockade, comb and zonal. Boiling-related mineral textures (e.g. banded, bladed and lattice) and fluid inclusion characteristics of coexisting liquid-rich and vapor-rich fluid inclusions have been identified in mineralized samples. -
