It’s been a pleasure to count him as one of our artists.” “Tracer totally encompasses how I want Homestead’s sound to be represented." Peter McMahon, Homestead Amps. 2013, Tracer James rewrote and performed one of Joe Bonamassa's hits for The Blues Masters Contest. Out of 2,600 entries Tracer James was one of Joe’s personal Top 10 picks. Onstage in Los Angeles, jamming with Joe, Tracer felt electrified and completely immersed within the band and his own soul satisfying performance. Tracer James passionately devotes endless hours, playing, recording and "tone chasing" in his studio.... creating his own personal sound! Islanders would take an old guitar, lose the frets, raise the strings, and then slide the dull edge of a steel knife to sound wavering chords up and down the strings. Further tinkering led to the invention of the Dobro, the classic bluegrass instrument. The Dobro eventually morphed into the lap steel, which when electrified was one of the first electric guitars, and along with the ukulele became one of the signature sounds of Hawaii. After pedals were added to the lap steel, pedal modifications developed until the standardized pedal steel was born. Unlike the lap steel, the pedal steel guitar is not limited in its voicings – it allows for an unlimited amount of inversions and chords.

  • Fender 400 Owner's Manual
The Fender 400 Pedal Steel Guitar for professional, advanced and student musicians is yet another instrument designed by Fender fulfilling the changing requirements of steel guitarists brought about by the advancements in the music world. The Fender 400 is designed to make ,possible its inclusion in all types of musical arrangements which has not been possible in the past. The instrument employs a 23" string length with eight strings. Only the finest. metals are used in the Fender 400, and at no point have corners been cut to reduce cost at the expense of quality parts or performance. The permanent mold cast frame of aluminum alloy provides a far greater degree of rigidity and is practically indestructible. It is designed to receive the instrument in such a way that temperature changes will produce no detuning effects, and in addition, the rigidity of the frame and the design of the instrument preclude detuning when the pedals are operated. Pulling levers, bridges and nuts and other parts subject to wear are of case-hardened steel. All metal parts exposed to the player's hands are heavily chrome plated, presenting an extremely attractive appearance. The new-type patent heads make tuning easier and more accurate, and the new case- hardened cam-action movable bridges have been incorporated for easier pedal action and to relieve string breakage. The design of the Fender 400 is such that undue strain and sharp bends in the cables are eliminated. Cable-connecting units are made in the same manner as airplane control assemblies to assure trouble-free operation.

O’Connor* INTRODUCTION The electric guitar is iconic for rock and roll music. And yet, it also played a defining role in the development of many other twentieth-century musical genres. Jump bands, electric blues and country, rockabilly, pop, and, later, soul, funk, rhythm and blues (“R&B”), and fusion, all were cen- tered in many ways around the distinctive, constantly evolving sound of the electric guitar. Add in the electric bass, which operated with an amplifica- tion model similar to that of the electric guitar, and these two new instru- ments created the tonal and stylistic

  • Knutsen's Electrical Knnection
Knutsen’s Electrical Knnection Or Knutsen & Hoopii: Strangers – or Friends – in Paradise?1 By Darrell Urbien Research Assistant to the Knutsen Archives Member, Echo Park Historical Society 2006, with revisions in blue by Gregg Miner, 2020 “That looks like a Knutsen lap steel,” I thought, casually clicking on an eBay ad. In my role as Research Assistant and Sub-Geek at the online Knutsen Archives, I had developed a desire to learn how to play steel guitar. And while actual Knutsen acoustic steels were out of my school-teacher- salary’s price range, electric lap steels (especially the older, odd-looking ones from the ‘50s) were often inexpensive enough to warrant a bid…or three. This particular auction item had what I can only describe as a “Knutsen-funky” aesthetic. It had a very blocky, “Knutsen-ish” headstock. It had a weird inlaid (metal!) pickguard. The end of the lower bout even sported a decorative point, like a Knutsen harp guitar or harp mandolin. The upper bout, on the other hand, had another point that looked a lot like those found on Kay Kraft mandolins or Tahitian banjos. Neat! c. 1907 short-scale “double-point” Chris Knutsen harp guitar. But of course, this particular steel couldn’t be a Knutsen. First, it was made out of a solid slab of wood. And second, it had a big honking electric pickup in it. Knutsen was alive during an amazing transitional period in Hawaiian music, but he had died in 1930. That’s too early to have gone electric. It would take 1 Miner: You’ll understand my new alternate title when you finish.

Harmonic Tuning Screen (in-app upgrade) The harmonics tuning option for iStroboSoft is a fantastic utility for viewing the fundamental frequency and tuning harmonics. View the fundamental frequency along with the first four overtones. Users can view tuning changes in real-time with rock- solid Peterson accuracy. The fundamental will always be displayed as the left-most band and the harmonic overtones will be displayed in order from left- to-right. The out-of-tune difference is displayed by the direction and speed of the strobe bands. The harmonic upgrade provides an excellent utility for inspecting the quality of instrument strings as dead strings will not ring in upper harmonic content or provide erratically out-of-tune harmonics. Help isolate instrument intonation, neck issues or pickup problems as well by analyzing the harmonic tuning levels. For tuning guitar, you can use this screen to tune until the brightest band stops (which may not be the fundamental note). This gives you a better "overall" tone as compared to just hearing the fundamental on its own as all harmonics are taken into consideration using this method. You can also use this screen to manually apply a stretch tuning, much like a piano. For example, on the E strings of the guitar, make sure the harmonics of the lower notes match the same tuning of the higher notes fundamental, i.e., E2 second harmonic matches the E4 fundamental. Percussion instrument builders who need to know what is happening beyond the fundamental note can also use the harmonic upgrade to see which harmonic(s) need(s) to be adjusted during the building process.
