Finson David García Mark Katz Philip Vandermeer © 2007 Travis David Stimeling ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT TRAVIS DAVID STIMELING: “Space, Place, and Protest: Austin’s Progressive Country Music Scene and the Negotiation of Texan Identities, 1968-1978” (Under the direction of Jocelyn R. Neal) The progressive country music movement developed in Austin, Texas, during the early 1970s as a community of liberal young musicians and concertgoers with strong interests in Texan country music traditions and contemporary rock music converged on the city. Children of the Cold War and the post-World War II migration to the suburbs, these “cosmic cowboys” sought to get back in touch with their rural roots and to leave behind the socially conservative world their parents had created for them. As a hybrid of country music and rock, progressive country music both encapsulated the contradictions of the cosmic cowboys in song and helped to create a musical sanctuary in which these youths could articulate their difference from mainstream Texan culture.     Review of Jim Bruce's Ragtime and Blues Guitar Picking Course Learn to Play Finger Style Acoustic Blues Guitar Something great has happened for anybody wanting to learn how to play acoustic blues guitar. It's called Jim Bruce Ragtime and Blues Guitar Picking Course - From Texas to the Delta. Now there's a mouthful! So what is it? Well, pretty much as the title says, it's a guitar course for learning how to play ragtime and blues finger style acoustic guitar. Before I go on, let me just say this isn't something for the absolute beginner guitarist. If you aren't yet comfortable or reasonably fluent in playing common chords, then you probably aren't ready for this just yet, unless you are hyper determined! About the Course The course is quite straightforward. It jumps straight in and shows you how to play a collection of 40 blues songs from blues guitarists such as Blind Blake, Robert Johnson and Big Bill Broonzy to name but a few. Each of the songs are shown on video (MP4 format), first at normal speed and then broken down into small sections, played slowly. The video also uses split screen for showing the left and right hands independently and displaying on screen Tabs and chord diagrams. All of the songs also come with a printable pdf file with the full guitar Tab. Although Jim offers a few tips in the videos, you are expected to know certain things like how to read guitar tab and are already familiar with the basic chords.
