American artists around the 1950s turned from abstract expressionism to a movement labeling them colorists. Colorists painted with a monochromatic color palette using variations of one color. OSHER Color 2021 Presentation 1 Mysteries of Color Color Foundation Q: Why is color? A: Color is a perception that arises from the responses of our visual systems to light in the environment. We probably have evolved with color vision to help us in finding good food and healthy mates. One of the fundamental truths about color that's important to understand is that color is something we humans impose on the world. The world isn't colored; we just see it that way. A reasonable working definition of color is that it's our human response to different wavelengths of light. The color isn't really in the light: We create the color as a response to that light Remember: The different wavelengths of light aren't really colored; they're simply waves of electromagnetic energy with a known length and a known amount of energy. Ranging from the highly technical, scientific, physiological, and psychological to the sublime, there’s so much information on the subject. The process of painting photographs (also referred to as handpainting, handcoloring, and/ or hand tinting) poses questions regarding the nature of color. How you see the world and how you intend to illustrate this vision is dictated by color. Handpainting takes photographically perceived forms one step further, giving them refined definition through the selective addition of color. That is the power behind the art of painting photographs. The use of color and its narrative voice is a tool to enhance photography, adding a new dimension, and perhaps, new meaning. Algharabali & Hanan A. Taqi Abstract Messaging through smart phones has become a vital method of communication. In the light of the use of emojis in messages, the following paper investigates the reasons and methods of the use of different emojis by college students in academic related settings. The study was implemented in the college of Basic Education in Kuwait. The participants, 163 male and female students, answered a questionnaire on the importance of emojis, the context of use, and the way they are used. In addition, some of the students were interviewed to elicit more information on the use of emojis. After the analysis of the qualitative and quantitative data, the researchers found that the use of emojis by students is highly important in the discussion of college-related topics. They are used as a safe vehicle to reflect criticism and negative comments in an authority-free setting.Whether they are used individuallyor in clusters, they carry a bundle of meaning. Despite its futuristic setting, Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? features several allusions to classic works of art. Although the androids have the capacity to appreciate such references on technical and even cultural levels, they lack the ability to identify meaningfully with the artworks as experiences. While the androids’ appreciation of art is tethered to a rigid rubric of logic and program-structured emotions, Dick emphasizes the ways in which “organic” humans, on the other hand, synthesize their logical and emotional reactions into a subjective, personal experience of artwork. In making this distinction, Dick suggests that the ability to empathize with the moral motivations and circumstantial emotions of the human subjects within each piece, as well as the capacity to recognize subjective thematic elements and the artists’ intentions behind them, are uniquely human characteristics. One of the first allusions that Dick features comes in the form of an opera: The Magic Flute. Dick chooses to present this allusion when Deckard must retire android Luba Luft, a singer performing as one of the opera’s protagonists. Dick’s decision to include this opera is significant because truth is a central theme in both the play and his novel. Deckard observes that it is “ironic” that an android should play a role where truth is so vital, because androids inherently lack the ability to understand the value of truth to such a role (Dick 96). -

MoMA EXHIBITION EXPLORES EDVARD MUNCH’S COMPELLING ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENT, SURVEYING HIS CAREER IN ITS ENTIRETY Major Retrospective Is the First to Be Held in An American Museum in Three Decades Edvard Munch: The Modern Life of the Soul February 19—May 8, 2006 The Joan and Preston Robert Tisch Gallery, sixth floor New York, February 14, 2006—Edvard Munch: The Modern Life of the Soul is the first retrospective devoted to the work of Edvard Munch (1863–1944)—the internationally renowned Norwegian painter, printmaker, and draftsman—to be held in an American museum in almost three decades. Featuring 87 paintings and 50 works on paper, it showcases Munch’s artistic achievement in its true richness and diversity, surveying his career in its entirety, from 1880 to 1944. Beginning with the artist’s early portraits and genre scenes, the exhibition charts Munch’s move away from Norwegian naturalism and towards an exploration of modern existential experience. Following each phase of his career, the exhibition shows Munch’s struggle to translate personal trauma into universal terms and, in the process, to comprehend the fundamental components of human existence: birth, love, and death. The exhibition is organized by Kynaston McShine, Chief Curator at Large, The Museum of Modern Art. MoMA is the only venue for the exhibition, which will be on view in The Joan and Preston Robert Tisch Gallery on the sixth floor from February 19 to May 8, 2006. Munch’s primary source of inspiration was his own life, which was marked by heartbreak, physical illness, emotional instability, and the deaths of some of his closest family members. -

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been successfully applied as a non- invasive method for the stratigraphic visualisation of the uppermost transparent and semi- transparent layers in paintings, such as varnishes. Several OCT case study examples have further demonstrated the capabilities of the non-contact interferometric technique to measure the thickness of the various varnish layers, to help monitor cleaning and associated optical changes, and to detect past restorations.
