  • New Emoji Requests from Twitter Users: When, Where, Why, and What We Can Do About Them
1 New Emoji Requests from Twitter Users: When, Where, Why, and What We Can Do About Them YUNHE FENG, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA ZHENG LU, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA WENJUN ZHOU, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA ZHIBO WANG, Wuhan University, China QING CAO∗, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA As emojis become prevalent in personal communications, people are always looking for new, interesting emojis to express emotions, show attitudes, or simply visualize texts. In this study, we collected more than thirty million tweets mentioning the word “emoji” in a one-year period to study emoji requests on Twitter. First, we filtered out bot-generated tweets and extracted emoji requests from the raw tweets using a comprehensive list of linguistic patterns. To our surprise, some extant emojis, such as fire and hijab , were still frequently requested by many users. A large number of non-existing emojis were also requested, which were classified into one of eight emoji categories by Unicode Standard. We then examined patterns of new emoji requests by exploring their time, location, and context. Eagerness and frustration of not having these emojis were evidenced by our sentiment analysis, and we summarize users’ advocacy channels. Focusing on typical patterns of co-mentioned emojis, we also identified expressions of equity, diversity, and fairness issues due to unreleased but expected emojis, and summarized the significance of new emojis on society. Finally, time- continuity sensitive strategies at multiple time granularity levels were proposed to rank petitioned emojis by the eagerness, and a real-time monitoring system to track new emoji requests is implemented.

  • How the Black Power Protest at the 1968 Olympics Killed Careers
https://www.history.com/news/1968-mexico-city-olympics-black-power-protest-backlash UPDATED: OCT 19, 2018 ORIGINAL: FEB 22, 2018 How the Black Power Protest at the 1968 Olympics Killed Careers ERIN BLAKEMORE It’s an iconic image: Two athletes raise their fists on the Olympic podium. The photograph, taken after the 200 meter race at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, turned African-American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos from track-and-field stars into the center of a roiling controversy over their raised-fist salute, a symbol of black power and the human rights movement at large. But look in the photo and you’ll see another man as well: silver medalist Peter Norman, a white Australian runner. Norman didn’t raise his fist that day, but he stood with Smith and Carlos. Though his show of solidarity ended up destroying Norman’s career, the three athletes’ actions that day would be just one in a line of protests on the athletic stage. 2 U.S. athletes Tommie Smith, center, and John Carlos raise gloved hands skyward during the playing of the Star Spangled Banner after Smith reCeived the gold and Carlos the bronze for the 200 meter run at the Summer Olympic Games in MexiCo City, 1968. AP Photo Smith and Carlos, who had won gold and bronze, respectively, agreed to use their medal wins as an opportunity to highlight the social issues roiling the United States at the time. Racial tensions were at a height, and the Civil Rights movement had given way to the Black Power movement.

  • Denmark Sweden Finland Germany Belgium
Denmark Legend holds that the Danes were in a battle that was going badly, and defeat seemed imminent. However as a Danish priest prayed to God, the Danes moved closer to victory. Just as the Danes were about to win, a red flag with a white cross fell from the sky and the Danes won the battle. Sweden According to the mythology, a Swedish king saw a golden cross in the sky as he landed in Finland. Seeing this as a sign from God he adopted the golden cross against a blue background. Finland The blue coloring represents the country's 190,000 lakes, the blue sky, and white for the snow that covers the land in winter. Germany In the early 1800’s, during Napoleon’s conquest of Europe, the Germans struggled against the occupying French forces. A certain volunteer Prussian army defeated Napolean’s army and saved Germany’s freedom. The German flag is a tribute to that army’s colors, which were black with red trim and gold buttons. Belgium Belgium’s flag was designed to represent it as an independent country. Black, gold and red are symbolic of the country's coat of arms; black representing the shield; gold representing the lion, and red representing the lion's claws and tongue. The stripes are vertical, as a tribute to France. United Kingdom Jack Stewart of Scotland had the idea to combine all the flags of the United Kingdom together, which is whyt it’s called the “Union Jack.” The red ( + ) cross of Saint George (patron saint of England), the white ( x ) cross of Saint Andrew (patron saint ofScotland), and the red ( x ) Cross of St Patrick (patron saint of Ireland).

(http://emojinet.knoesis.org) In April 2015, Instagram reported that 40 percent of all messages contained an emoji. New emojis are constantly being added. With the rapid expansion and surge of emoji use, how do we know what emojis mean when we send them? And how do we ensure that the person at the other end knows what we mean? It turns out that the meaning of emojis varies a whole lot based on context. Emojis, derived from Japanese “e” for picture and “moji” for character, were first introduced in the late 1990s but did not become Unicode standard until 2009. Emojis are pictures depicting faces, food, sports (https://www.psychologytoday.com/basics/sport-and- competition), animals, and more, such as unicorns, sunrises, or pizza. Apple introduced an emoji keyboard to iOS in 2011 and Android put them on mobile platforms in 2013. Emojis are different from emoticons, which can be constructed from your basic keyboard, like (-:. The digital use of emoticons has been traced back to as early as 1982, though there are earlier reported cases in Morse code telegraphs.

Algharabali & Hanan A. Taqi Abstract Messaging through smart phones has become a vital method of communication. In the light of the use of emojis in messages, the following paper investigates the reasons and methods of the use of different emojis by college students in academic related settings. The study was implemented in the college of Basic Education in Kuwait. The participants, 163 male and female students, answered a questionnaire on the importance of emojis, the context of use, and the way they are used. In addition, some of the students were interviewed to elicit more information on the use of emojis. After the analysis of the qualitative and quantitative data, the researchers found that the use of emojis by students is highly important in the discussion of college-related topics. They are used as a safe vehicle to reflect criticism and negative comments in an authority-free setting.Whether they are used individuallyor in clusters, they carry a bundle of meaning. Keywords: Sociolinguistics, self-expression, emojis, gender, college, undergraduate education 1.
