Introduction The awareness of the power of typography in communication can be traced back to the earliest civilizations of mankind when production of type was through scratch marks made on flat surfaces using sharp objects. Twentieth century records show well developed type from Mesopotamia, Chinese calligraphy, Egyptian Hieroglyphics and Phoenician alphabet. How do you make any sense of history, art or literature without knowing the stories and typography of your own culture and all the world's main religions? Polly Toynbee (1947). Contemporary typography is significant because it brings attention to civilization within the African continent. African countries have type and symbols that have been used to communicate written messages. Many of these remain undiscovered by the mainstream theorists. Saki Mafundikwa in his book ‘afrikan alphabets’, has made presentations on African letterforms, and he continues to unearth innovative and little understood symbols. This paper aims to explore how the Ancient African iconology has been reborn in to contemporary typography and is used in today’s publishing. The study is placed in the context of the history, meaning, deciphering and transformation of Typography. A conceptual framework is constructed, based on critical theory from arts disciplines, notably from the history of African Iconography from the Igbos and the Adinkra. This paper also finds that typography has now transformed into informal, colloquial icons, where everyday published communiqué can occur through signs rather than speaking. -

Brathair 18 (1), 2018 ISSN 1519-9053 Celts and the Castro Culture in the Iberian Peninsula – issues of national identity and Proto-Celtic substratum Silvana Trombetta1 Laboratory of Provincial Roman Archeology (MAE/USP) [email protected] Received: 03/29/2018 Approved: 04/30/2018 Abstract : The object of this article is to discuss the presence of the Castro Culture and of Celtic people on the Iberian Peninsula. Currently there are two sides to this debate. On one hand, some consider the “Castro” people as one of the Celtic groups that inhabited this part of Europe, and see their peculiarity as a historically designed trait due to issues of national identity. On the other hand, there are archeologists who – despite not ignoring entirely the usage of the Castro culture for the affirmation of national identity during the nineteenth century (particularly in Portugal) – saw distinctive characteristics in the Northwest of Portugal and Spain which go beyond the use of the past for political reasons. We will examine these questions aiming to decide if there is a common Proto-Celtic substrate, and possible singularities in the Castro Culture. This controversy involves nationalism, debates on the possible existence of invading hordes (populations that would bring with them elements of the Urnfield, Hallstatt, and La Tène cultures), and the possible presence of a Proto-Celtic cultural substrate common to several areas of the Old Continent. -

Creating a Constellation
CLASSROOM ACTIVITY Creating a Constellation General Information Level: elementary 1st and 2nd cycles. Students per group: individual activity. How long: two 60-minute periods. Where: in class. When: before visiting the Planetarium. Type of activity: discovery led by the teacher. Key words: constellations — stars — legends — mythology. Skills honed: observing, classifying, inventing concepts, researching, developing motor skills, writing, communicating, fostering creativity. Starting Point What is a constellation? What picture does a group of stars evoke? Can I create my own constellation and think up a story about it? Preconceptions Students, particularly younger ones, might not know what a constellation is. They may also believe that the constellations are the same for all people on Earth and that everyone who looks at a specific group of stars sees the same thing in it. Basic Concepts From time immemorial, people have pondered the heavens. In the patterns formed by neighbour- ing stars, different cultures have seen animals, mythical creatures, legendary heroes, and objects of cultural importance. These groups of randomly linked stars are known as constellations. They then compare their creations with what other students have thought up and what other cultures have seen in the same group of stars. In this paper, we discuss the work on comets of Caroline Herschel, the first female comet-hunter. After leaving Bath for the environs of Windsor Castle and eventually Slough, she discovered at least eight comets, five of which were reported in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. We consider her public image, astronomers' perceptions of her contributions, and the style of her astronomical drawings that changed with the technological developments in astronomical illustration. 1. General Introduction and the Herschels at Bath Building on the research of Michael Hoskini and our book on comets and meteors in British art,ii we examine the comets of Caroline Herschel (1750-1848), the first female comet-hunter and the first salaried female astronomer (Figure 1), who was more famous for her work on nebulae. She and her brother William revolutionized the conception of the universe from a Newtonian one—i.e., mechanical with God as the great clockmaker watching over its movements—to a more modern view—i.e., evolutionary.
