These two books are the starting point and the main subject of the fol- lowing pages which, in part, may serve as a kind of fragmentary sub-commentary to sections of those two works. The content of these studies is rather varied: they include philosophical and psychological inves- tigations, references to the practical application of the teachings concerned, pointers to neglected or unnoticed aspects of the Abhidhamma, textual research etc. This variety of contents serves to show that wherever we dig deep enough into that inex- haustible mine, the Abhidhamma literature, we shall meet with valuable contributions to the theo- retical understanding and practical realization of Buddhist doctrine. So the main purpose of these pages is to stimulate further research in the field of Abhidhamma, much wider and deeper than it was possible in this modest attempt. There is no reason why the Abhidhamma phi- losophy of the Southern or Theravàda tradition should stagnate today or why its further develop- ment should not be resumed. In fact, through many centuries there has been a living growth of Abhi- dhammic thought, and even in our own days there iii are original contributions to it from Burma, for example, by that remarkable monk-philosopher, the Venerable Ledi Sayadaw. -

BUDDHISM AND WRITTEN LAW: DHAMMASATTHA MANUSCRIPTS AND TEXTS IN PREMODERN BURMA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Dietrich Christian Lammerts May 2010 2010 Dietrich Christian Lammerts BUDDHISM AND WRITTEN LAW: DHAMMASATTHA MANUSCRIPTS AND TEXTS IN PREMODERN BURMA Dietrich Christian Lammerts, Ph.D. Cornell University 2010 This dissertation examines the regional and local histories of dhammasattha, the preeminent Pali, bilingual, and vernacular genre of Buddhist legal literature transmitted in premodern Burma and Southeast Asia. It provides the first critical analysis of the dating, content, form, and function of surviving dhammasattha texts based on a careful study of hitherto unexamined Burmese and Pali manuscripts. It underscores the importance for Buddhist and Southeast Asian Studies of paying careful attention to complex manuscript traditions, multilingual post- and para- canonical literatures, commentarial strategies, and the regional South-Southeast Asian literary, historical, and religious context of the development of local legal and textual practices. Part One traces the genesis of dhammasattha during the first and early second millennia C.E. through inscriptions and literary texts from India, Cambodia, Campå, Java, Lakå, and Burma and investigates its historical and legal-theoretical relationships with the Sanskrit Bråhmaˆical dharmaßåstra tradition and Pali Buddhist literature. It argues that during this period aspects of this genre of written law, akin to other disciplines such as alchemy or medicine, functioned in both Buddhist and Bråhmaˆical contexts, and that this ecumenical legal culture persisted in certain areas such as Burma and Java well into the early modern period. -

François Lagirarde The Nibbāna of Mahākassapa the Elder: Notes on a Buddhist Narrative Transmitted in Thai and Lao Literature THIS LEGEND OF MAHākassapa’S NIBBāNA from his last morning, to his failed farewell to King Ajātasattu, to his parinibbāna in the evening, to his ultimate “meeting” with Metteyya thousands of years later—is well known in Thailand and Laos although it was not included in the Pāli tipiṭaka or even mentioned in the commentaries or sub-commentaries. In fact, the texts known as Mahākassapatheranibbāna (the Nibbāna of Mahākassapa the Elder) represent only one among many other Nibbāna stories known in Thai-Lao Buddhist literature. In this paper I will attempt to show that the textual tradition dealing with the last moments of many disciples or “Hearers” of the Buddha—with Mahākassapa as the first one—became a rich, vast, and well preserved genre at least in the Thai world. -

Syllabus for Post Graduate Diploma in Theravada Buddhist Psychology (A course applicable to students of the University Department) From the Academic Year 2019 - 2020 Approved by the Ad-hoc Board of Studies in Pali Literature and Culture Savitribai Phule Pune University 1 Savitribai Phule Pune University Post Graduate Diploma in Theravada Buddhist Psychology General Instructions about the Course, the Pattern of Examination and the Syllabus I. General Instructions I.1. General Structure: Post Graduate Diploma in Theravada Buddhist Psychology is a two-semester course of sixteen credits offered by the Department of Pali, Savitribai Phule Pune University. The course is to be completed within one year. It contains four courses of four credits each. Courses I, II and III are also available as elective courses for students doing any Master degree course in the University. Students will be introduced to the theory, practice and research methodology through lectures, group discussions, practice sessions and project work. Teaching of semesters I and II will be sequential. Syllabus for each paper will be discussed in 60 clock hours (approximately) during each semester. Attending at least one Buddhist meditation retreat of minimum ten days is mandatory. Students are expected to design and carry out a small research project on any chosen theme connecting Buddhism and Psychology as a part of course IV. Students’ understanding will be assessed on the basis of their performance on things such as: Assignments, Debate on conceptual issues, Group discussion, Essay writing, Seminar presentation, Tutorial writing, Written and Oral examination, Dissertation, etc. Students are expected to maintain at least 75% attendance and to ensure their active participation in the class. -

The Literary Abhidhamma Text: Anuruddha's Manual of Defining Mind and Matter (Namarupapariccheda) and the Production of Pali Commentarial Literature in South India By Sean M. Goldman Professor Robert H. Sharf Fall 2020 ABSTRACT This dissertation is a study of the ancillary works of the well-known but little understood Pali commentator and Abhidhamma scholar, Anuruddha. Anuruddha's Manual of Defining Mind & Matter (namarupapariccheda) and Decisive Treatment of the Abhidhamma Ultimates (paramatthavinicchaya) are counted among the “sleeping texts” of the Pali commentarial tradition (texts not included in standard curricula, and therefore neglected). Anuruddha's well-studied synopsis of the subject matter of the commentarial-era Abhidhamma tradition, the Compendium of Topics of the Abhidhamma (abhidhammatthasangaha), widely known under its English title, A Comprehensive Manual of Abhidhamma, came to be regarded as the classic handbook of the orthodox Theravadin Abhidhamma system. His lesser-known works, however, curiously fell into obscurity and came to be all but forgotten. In addition to shedding new and interesting light on the Compendium of Topics of the Abhidhamma (abhidhammatthasangaha), these overlooked works reveal another side of the famous author – one as invested in the poetry of his doctrinal expositions as in the terse, unembellished clarity for which he is better remembered. Anuruddha's poetic abhidhamma treatises provide us a glimpse of a little- known early strand of Mahavihara-affiliated commentarial literature infusing the exegetical project with creative and poetic vision. -

The result of the findings is as follows: Firstly, passing through the historical periods of the land of present day Vietnam, Theravāda Buddhism was practiced by the Khmer in the Mekong Delta, which is recorded to have been integrating into the homeland of Vietnam. Thereby, Theravāda Buddhism became to be practiced in Vietnam. Besides this, Theravāda Buddhism appeared and is followed by the Vietnamese people in other parts of Vietnam outside the Mekong Delta area.
