This region of Europe is crucial for our understanding of the paleobiogeography and evolution of these middle-sized lizards. Although this clade has a broad geographical distribution across the continent today, its presence in the fossil record has only rarely been reported. The genus is recorded from Belize for the first time, with photographs of a single male specimen of a possibly undescribed species. Introduction Martella Peckham & Peckham 1892 is a genus of ant-like spiders in the family Salticidae, native to North and South America, with a range spanning from Mexico to northern Argentina. The genus is poorly known and currently consists of twelve recognized species, six of which are described only from a single sex (World Spider Catalog 2014). It was synonymized with Sarinda Peckham & Peckham 1892 by Simon in 1901, restored by Galiano in 1964, and most recently revised by Galiano in 1996. In this paper, the first photographic and genetic records for the genus are presented, as well as a limited analysis of its relationship to other genera in the Amycoida clade. -

Litt Invasive grasses can alter plant communities and can potentially affect arthropods due to specialized relationships with certain plants as food resources and reproduction sites. Kleberg bluestem (Dichanthium annulatum) is a non-native grass and tanglehead (Heteropogon contortus) is native to the United States, but recently has become dominant in south Texas. I sought to: 1) quantify changes in plant and arthropod communities in invasive grasses compared to native grasses, and 2) determine if grass origin would alter effects. I sampled vegetation and arthropods on 90 grass patches in July and September 2009 and 2010 on the King Ranch in southern Texas. Arthropod communities in invasive grasses were less diverse and abundant, compared to native grasses; I also documented differences in presence and abundance of certain orders and families. -

Nansei Islands Biological Diversity Evaluation Project Report 1 Chapter 1
Introduction WWF Japan’s involvement with the Nansei Islands can be traced back to a request in 1982 by Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh. The “World Conservation Strategy”, which was drafted at the time through a collaborative effort by the WWF’s network, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), posed the notion that the problems affecting environments were problems that had global implications. Furthermore, the findings presented offered information on precious environments extant throughout the globe and where they were distributed, thereby providing an impetus for people to think about issues relevant to humankind’s harmonious existence with the rest of nature. One of the precious natural environments for Japan given in the “World Conservation Strategy” was the Nansei Islands. The Duke of Edinburgh, who was the President of the WWF at the time (now President Emeritus), naturally sought to promote acts of conservation by those who could see them through most effectively, i.e. pertinent conservation parties in the area, a mandate which naturally fell on the shoulders of WWF Japan with regard to nature conservation activities concerning the Nansei Islands. This marked the beginning of the Nansei Islands initiative of WWF Japan, and ever since, WWF Japan has not only consistently performed globally-relevant environmental studies of particular areas within the Nansei Islands during the 1980’s and 1990’s, but has put pressure on the national and local governments to use the findings of those studies in public policy. Unfortunately, like many other places throughout the world, the deterioration of the natural environments in the Nansei Islands has yet to stop. -

Wilson Department of Life Sciences, University of the West Indies, Mona 7, Kingston, Jamaica The introduced small Asian mongoose (Herpestes auropunctatus) has been widely implicated in extirpations and extinctions of island taxa. Recent studies and anecdotal observations suggest that the nests of terrestrial island species are particularly vulnerable to mongoose predation, yet quantitative data have remained scarce, even for species long assumed to be at risk from the mongoose. We monitored nests of the Critically Endangered Jamaican Rock Iguana (Cyclura collei) to determine nest fate, and augmented these observations with motion-activated camera trap images to document the predatory behaviour of the mongoose. Our data provide direct, quantitative evidence of high nest predation pressure attributable to the mongoose, and together with reported high rates of predation on hatchling and juvenile iguanas (also by the mongoose), support the original conclusion that the mongoose was responsible for the apparent lack of recruitment and the aging structure of the small population that was ‘re-discovered’ in 1990. Encouragingly however, our data also demonstrate a significant reduction in nest predation pressure within an experimental mongoose-removal area. Thus, our results indicate that otherwise catastrophic levels of nest loss (at or near 100%) can be ameliorated or even eliminated by removal trapping of the mongoose. We suggest that such targeted control efforts could also prove useful in safeguarding other threatened insular species with reproductive strategies that are notably vulnerable to mongoose predation (e.g., the incubation of eggs on or underground). -

We were staying just a few minutes away at the comfortable Ark Hotel, where we checked in and were soon in our rooms settling down for a night’s sleep before the start of the tour. Day 2 Thursday 30th May Fllake-Sektori Rinia Lagoon, Karavasta, Berat We had a full programme after our breakfast in Tirana before heading for the scenic UNESCO city of Berat, our base for the next couple of days. We first visited the Rinia lagoon close to the capital and we were blessed with some pleasantly warm sunshine. This area is a popular beach location, but being a weekday there was little disturbance. Our first stop before the main lagoon was the unprotected site of a large Bee-eater breeding colony. Over 200 pairs breed here in total and we watched over 40 pairs. We also saw several Red-rumped Swallows here, had good views of a vocal Cuckoo and a Great Reed Warbler sang in the dyke. -
