Copeoglossum aurae is a newly discovered skink in Trinidad and Tobago (Hedges and Conn, 2012). It has a dark lateral solid stripe that extends from under its oval shaped ear past its hind legs onto the tail (Fig. 1). C. aurae male and female specimens can reach a maximum of 98.5mm and 109mm snout-vent length, respectively, and tails can reach up to 65mm. They are heavily scaled lizards with scales being smaller on the limbs in comparison to other body parts. Their tails, like some other reptiles, can be broken off and regenerated. The dorsal colour of most specimens are greyish-green with small to medium deep brown spots evenly spread on the body, limbs and tail. The dorsal colours are different shades of brown, grey and green, and green-white lateral stripes are found from the ear to the hind limbs (Hedges and Conn, 2012). DISTRIBUTION. Copeoglossum aurae species is distributed in some islands of the Caribbean including southern Windward Islands like St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, and it was postulated that some may have migrated to parts of South America (Venezuela) (Murphy et al., 2013). HABITAT AND ECOLOGY. C. aurae exhibit both arboreal and non-arboreal characteristics, since they are found either on trees or on the ground (Murphy et al., 2013). -

Arrival and diversification of mabuyine skinks (Squamata: Scincidae) in the Neotropics based on a fossil-calibrated timetree Anieli Guirro Pereira and Carlos G. The evolution of South American Mabuyinae skinks holds significant biogeographic interest because its sister lineage is distributed across the African continent and adjacent islands. Moreover, at least one insular species, Trachylepis atlantica, has independently reached the New World through transoceanic dispersal. To clarify the evolutionary history of both Neotropical lineages, this study aimed to infer an updated timescale using the largest species and gene sampling dataset ever assembled for this group. By extending the analysis to the Scincidae family, we could employ fossil information to estimate mabuyinae divergence times and carried out a formal statistical biogeography analysis. To unveil macroevolutionary patterns, we also inferred diversification rates for this lineage and evaluated whether the colonization of South American continent significantly altered the mode of Mabuyinae evolution. Methods. A time-calibrated phylogeny was inferred under the Bayesian framework employing fossil information. This timetree was used to (i) evaluate the historical biogeography of mabuiyines using the statistical approach implemented in Bio- GeoBEARS; (ii) estimate macroevolutionary diversification rates of the South American Mabuyinae lineages and the patterns of evolution of selected traits, namely, the mode of reproduction, body mass and snout–vent length; (iii) test the hypothesis of differential macroevolutionary patterns in South American lineages in BAMM and GeoSSE; and Submitted 21 November 2016 (iv) re-evaluate the ancestral state of the mode of reproduction of mabuyines. -

Herpestes auropunctatus (formerly known as H. javanicus) is native to south Asia and has been introduced to Trinidad and Tobago (and other Caribbean islands) for control of rats and snakes. This animal is small and slender with short legs (Fig. 1). Its head is elongated with a pointed muzzle and small ears (Csurhes & Fisher 2010). The mongoose’s tail is muscular at the bottom and tapers gradually throughout its length, it also possess five toes that contains retractable claws. Its body length is between 50-67 cm for females and 54-67 cm for males. Its weight ranges from 305-662 grams. Their bodies are covered with short hair that is coloured pale to dark brown with golden flecks (Csurhes & Fisher 2010). Both males and females have an extensible anal pad with glands that are ducted lateral to the anus. ECOLOGY. Its habitat range is the largest in the family Herpestidae. It can thrive in a large range of habitats inclusive of agricultural land, coastal areas, natural forests, planted forests, grassland, wetland areas. However, climatically it is best able to survive in tropical zones (Csurhes & Fisher 2010). Carnivorous, with a varied and opportunistic diet, this diet is dependent on the habitat it is in and the food availability. The Small Indian Mongoose Herpestes auropuncatus (Hodgson 1836)in the Balkans A synopsis of it’s introduction and recent information. David Bird Background 1.The Area • The Mediterranean basin to which the Balkans and the Adriatic sea belong is regarded as a one of the biodiversity hotspots especially where Reptiles and Amphibians are concerned (Myers,N.et.al 2000) with several endemic species and subspecies so should be a conservation priority for Europe. The Balkans is not only important for herpetofauna but for many other taxa and has a book dedicated to it (Griffiths,H.I et al. 2004). Chapter 10 of the book concerns the herpetofauna giving details of the number of endemic species for specific areas (Džukić & Kalezić 2004) the so called “Adriatic triangle” which covers Montenegro and adjacent Albania & Croatia having 10 endemic species. A recent checklist and bibliography has been produced for Croatia (Jelić 2014). Any invasive alien predator becoming widespread in this region may have dire consequences for its herpetological biodiversity . 2. The Problem itself • The Small Indian Mongoose has been successfully introduced into many areas around the World especially on islands for biological control of pest and unwanted species especially snakes but is now considered to be one of the worst invasive animals appearing on the I.U.C.N.’s worst 100 invasive species list ( I.U.C.N. 2000). Island species with no experience of predatory mammals have been badly affected with some species of herpetofauna having become extinct (Honneger,R.E. 1981). At least 64 islands around the World have this mongoose on them and they have been eradicated from 6 islands. -
