Best regards from, The Europadisc Team DISC OF THE MONTH Debussy Les Trois Sonates: Late Works £9.07 Isabelle Faust, Alexander Melnikov, Jean-Guihen Queyras, Javier Perianes, Xavier de or pay just Maistre, Antoine Tamestit, Magali Mosnier, Tanguy de Williencourt Harmonia Mundi HMM 902303 £8.25 The outbreak of the First World War at the end of July 1914 plunged Debussy into deep if your order value distress. Tormented by the cancer that was eventually to kill him and the disasters of the exceeds £50* conflict, he had the greatest difficulty in continuing his work. Fortunately, the year 1915 * to qualify for the special price, brought him a new lease of life. Debussy planned to write ‘Six Sonates pour divers your order value must exceed a instruments’, scored for forces as varied as oboe, horn and harpsichord or trumpet, clarinet, total of £50 excluding this bassoon and piano. The diversity of the instruments chosen, the introduction of a harpsichord recording and before any applicable carriage charges. and the notion of a collection of six works were symbolic of the tribute he wished to pay to Offer available while stocks last. the music of Couperin and Rameau. This choice is all the more unexpected in that Debussy had steered clear of chamber music for more than twenty years. Although we do not know exactly when Debussy began composing the Sonata for cello and piano, we do know that he finished it on 3 August 1915. Its style reflects the composer’s contrasting feelings: the war and its trail of horrors, the profound joy of composing again. Immediately after completing the Cello Sonata, Debussy began composing the Sonata for flute, viola and harp, which he completed in Pourville on September 14. The three movements of this triptych with its unusual scoring exude a perfume of nostalgia. Aside from the occasional pieces included here, in 1916 and 1917 Debussy also set about composing his third and (as it turned out) last sonata, for violin and piano. This, Debussy’s last completed work, marks the quintessence of his language in the rapid succession of thematic cells that follow one another with innovative effects of sonority between the piano and the violin, but also passages of a very inward, grief-stricken lyricism. 2 PRIORITY NEW RELEASES DG and Decca Rachmaninov Suite Italienne Piano Concertos 2 & 4 Works for violin & piano Trifonov, Philadelphia by Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Orchestra, Nezet-Seguin Stravinsky & Respighi £12.50 Dego, Leonardi DG 483 5362 £12.50 due 12/10 DG 481 7297 due 12/10 Memory From Darkness Piano works by Chopin, to Light Debussy, Satie, Silvestrov Russian works for cello and Sawhney and piano Grimaud Hewgill, Ashkenazy £12.50 £12.50 DG 483 5710 Decca 481 6562 Also available DG 483 5022 Bach, JS Keyboard works inc Chorale Preludes, Sinfonias, Preludes & Fugues etc Olafsson £12.50 DG 481 7067 Strauss Forever New recordings from the Vienna Boys’ Choir Wirth £12.50 Decca 481 7407 Gershwin Reimagined An American in London Berg (piano);RPO;Serebrier £12.50 Decca 481 7190 ARC Arias by Handel and Glass Costanzo (countertenor);Les Violons du Roy;Cohen £12.50 Classic FM CFMD 64 Hawes The Great War Symphony Alder;Ellicott;RPO;Hawes £12.50 Classic FM CFMD 61 Time to Relax The ultimate music to escape and unwind to 2CD £12.50 Decca 483 4159 Shostakovich Complete String Quartets, Piano Quintet 7CD Borodin Quartet £38.95 DG 483 5340 Anne-Sophie Mutter The Early Years - Mozart, Beethoven etc 3CD + Blu-ray Audio due 12/10 £32.95 DG 483 5609 Wihelm Kempff The Schubert Recordings on DG 9CD + Blu-ray Audio due 19/10 £41.95 Cecilia Bartoli Henryk Szeryng Rossini Edition Complete Philips, 15 CDs + 6 DVDs collecting together Mercury and DG the complete recorded repertoire Recordings from Rossini’s oeuvre of the most lustrous Rossinian primissima donna £91.95 £89.95 Decca 483 4194 (44CD) due 12/10 Decca 483 3936 (15CD + 6DVD) FOUR NEW CONDUCTOR AND ORCHESTRA BOXSETS FROM DG DG 483 5490 Neeme Jarvi Recordings with the Gothenburg SO – Grieg, Nielsen, Berwald, Sibelius etc 8CD £19.95 DG 483 5496 Seiji Ozawa Recordings with the the Boston SO – Faure, Mahler, Prokofiev, Bartok etc 8CD £19.95 DG 483 5494 Daniel Barenboim Recordings with the Orchestre de Paris – Berlioz, Debussy, Ravel etc 8CD £19.95 DG 483 5492 Carlo Maria Giulini Recordings with the Wiener Philharmoniker – Brahms and Bruckner 8CD £19.95 3 PRIORITY NEW RELEASES Warner Classics and Erato at £10.95 each (except where stated) Beethoven Cinema Miroir(s) Beethoven Piano Concertos 4 & 5 Film themes arranged for Opera arias by Gounod, Piano Sonatas 30-32 Angelich, Insula Orchestra, cello and orchestra Massenet, Puccini etc Tharaud Equilbey Capucon, Brussels PO, Deneve Dreisig (sop) 9029 563382 due 12/10 9029 563417 9029 563393 due 12/10 9029 563413 (Inc bonus DVD) Massenet Bach, JS Scarlatti, D Bach Inspirations La Navarraise 2 and 3 part Inventions Sonatas Guitar works & transcs by Kurzak, Alagna, NY Opera Debicz Toccatas Rondeau (harpsichord) Mangore, Bach, Tansman etc Orchestra, Veronesi Debicz 9029 563368 due 19/10 Garcia 9029 560570 due 19/10 9029 560146 9029 560526 Himmelsmusik 39’45 vol.3 Chanticleer Chopin Sacred works by Theile, Works by Weinberg, Panufnik Then and There - Scherzi and Ballades Schutz, JC Bach, Ritter etc and Czajkowski Here and Now (reissue) L’Arpeggiata, Pluhar Sinfonia Varsovia (compilation) Huve 9029 563400 9029 557064 9029 561778 due 12/10 9029 561196 £6.95 NEW GREAT VALUE BOXSETS!
