Bruce joined Habonim when many of our founding generation of German Jews were still active members of the congregation and attending services on a regular basis. He has witnessed and helped guide the transition from that founding generation to our current diverse membership, eagerly welcoming each succeeding generation with warmth, humor, and kindness. As our cantor, Bruce not only shared with us his beautiful voice; he was a partner in the joys and sorrows that define our lives – truly the heart of our community. Bruce was the calming presence who put nervous children and parents at ease through Bat and Bar Mitzvah preparations and the excitement and stress of that special day. Throughout his time as our cantor, Bruce devoted himself to calling and visiting members who were ill and comforting grieving families. Bruce’s caring nature, boundless optimism and easy-going manner have been critical elements in creating and maintaining our warm and welcoming community. Bruce’s positive impact on Habonim cannot be overstated. He has been the heart and the rock-solid foundation for the builders — supporting our Habonim community and holding us together through multiple changes in rabbinic and lay leadership over the years all the while welcoming members and guests, new and old, with his strong voice and his gentle spirit. Northland High School has a culture all its own. While Northland students develop their own identities, they also learn to come together, despite all their differences, and form a community. They learn that there is more than one way to see the world. Life's big decisions might be shrouded in a "gray area," but Northland students learn to navigate by the illuminated green and gold of their common experiences as Vikings. As freshmen, we enter the school with uncertainty, leaving the comfort zone of middle school behind. We learn to depend on each other. No matter how different we all are, we need to stick together to make it through that first stressful year. In our sophomore year, we feel more sure of ourselves. As a result, we become more aware of our choices. Will we embrace the diverse views and backgrounds of our peers? Will we expand our horizons or gravitate toward the same friends and behaviors? Will we hang on despite personal, social, and academic challenges and commit to graduate in a future that still seems so far away? We come to understand that our future is in our hands.

Through surveys we conduct and just reading the news, I know that financial fraud and abuse continues. We are committed to doing our part to protect consumers from fraudulent, unethical practices that can put their financial futures at risk. More than two years ago, CFP Board’s Consumer Advocate, Eleanor Blayney, CFP® wrote the Consumer Guide to Financial Self-Defense to help protect consumers from fraud and abuse. Now she has turned her attention to specifically helping older Americans defend themselves against unscrupulous financial advisors.
