Northland High Ichool 1919 Northeli/f 0riViz: Columbus, Oil 43229 fldvisor*. f)iana Turn^^r editors: Jamii3 and Jami(3 Qow 0v^z.n whs3D it’§ not all black and white... Northland High School has a culture all its own. While Northland students develop their own identities, they also learn to come together, despite all their differences, and form a community. They learn that there is more than one way to see the world. Life's big decisions might be shrouded in a "gray area," but Northland students learn to navigate by the illuminated green and gold of their common experiences as Vikings. As freshmen, we enter the school with uncertainty, leaving the comfort zone of middle school behind. We learn to depend on each other. No matter how different we all are, we need to stick together to make it through that first stressful year. In our sophomore year, we feel more sure of ourselves. As a result, we become more aware of our choices. Will we embrace the diverse views and backgrounds of our peers? Will we expand our horizons or gravitate toward the same friends and behaviors? Will we hang on despite personal, social, and academic challenges and commit to graduate in a future that still seems so far away? We come to understand that our future is in our hands. Junior year is a time to put decisions into action. After two years of greeting new faces and exploring new ideas, we begin to sort out what our goals will be. We feel motivated to grow, to learn, and to pursue our dreams. All the "gray area" seems to dissolve slowly, as we come closer to estabhshing our legacy as Vikings and redefining values as independent adults. At last, senior year roUs around. We look at our friends—we have made it through thick and thin. We can reflect on our accomplishments Even when the future seems confusing, filled with too and look forward to new vistas. We are ready to many choices, too much gray area between wrong and carry our deep respect for new and diverse right, we can look back at our time at Northland High world views into our adult lives. We are wiUing School, reflecting on all we have learned, and chosose to embrace all the wide world has to offer! wisely. The green and gold will lead us through the gray. W fz. th (3 with®

It takes dedication and commitment. Mr. Smith was one such person. He graduated from Northland in '68 and coached the football team while he attended college. He said that his favorite thing about teaching was " seeing young people learn how to think and become young adults." When the school was being built, he was given a tour of it by the principal, so he really was involved in it from the very beginning. His advice to all Northland students is, " Be mindful of your choices today because they will open and close doors for you tomorrow." tfwob»

60 2007 was the last year for many of Northland's finest. Ms. Adams, our Homecoming and Scheduling Specialist will now be leaving us behind. Ms. Coury, who has built our library into quite a collection over all these years, will now be spending more time with her beloved pets. Mrs. Soulen helped start the Humanities program at Northland but will now spend time with her retired hisband and working to finish her doctorate. Was it the skill of our players, the pride of our students, or the luck of the Viking spirit roaming the school? Maybe a combination of all three! Either way, the Vikings experienced a phenomenal and unforgettable year. Excitment began with the start of the boys soccer and football seasons. Our boys are known for their great skill, but this season they made it to Crew Stadium for the City Championships where they beat the West Cowboys 3-0. The football team caused a riot when they began to win football games. For as long as the Seniors could remember, the football team never won a homecoming game, but not this year! We blew away Linden Mckinley 49-0 for our homecoming win and beat Whetstone at their homecoming, seeking vengeance for all the times they beat us at homecoming. Yet, the highlight of the season came when our Vikings beat the Brookhaven Bearcats 6-0 in overtime. With football season wrapped up, it was time to begin the much anticipated boys basketball season. The boys had an undefeated season and were not only City Champions but District Champions as well. The hype of the basketball season created Viking pride throughout the school and thus, Northland Nation was born. The student body gathered together for every game decked out in green and gold and cheered their lungs out! This created remarkable and unforgetable school spirit. We will never forget the great memories we had this sports season at Northland High School. Vikinq |t/iking fOOTPAW W This year, the Northland Viking Football team revealed big improvements. The team] finished with a 5-5 record, making this season the first non losing one in four years! The team was lead by senior captains Jamef Kendrick, Marcus Rose, Sam Ricks, and Evan Correa. The Viki'ng defense dominate] the city competition. They forced three shutouts this year. "We showed major growth from a year ago," said captain Sam, Ricks. The highlight of the season, however] was the overtime thriller against Brookhaven."Our coaches were the big reason for eve-ry win. They really prepared u| for every game," exclaimed Marcus Rose. Hi also commented, "This had to be the closest] team we've had since I've been here." The Vikings look to make bigger strides in the 2008 season. They have eight starters returning next year. With last year's coaches not returning, the captains worried about who would coach and guide the Vikings toward a City League Championship. The team did, however, have several key players returning from last season; Ebenezer Daffa, Benny Ndive and Jeff Frisch returning for defense, Harrison Poku Yeboah, Prince Sinkenah, and Joe Amponsah returning for midfield, and Trevor Black returning for forward. Together they helped lead this year's Vikings to a City League Championship. The Vikings ended their season with a loss to Olentangy Liberty and ended up with a final record of 13-1-1. This was the team's second City Championship in 3 years. The 2006-2007 soccer team will be one of the best to remember at Northland! Right: Everett Bingham flips the score! Injuries to key players continuously set the team back. The' incoming freshman and the senior leadership combined to put up a fight every game. The motivational 3 senior class always rallied the team morale during the grimmest moments of the season. Senior Captain Ce'Nedra Cyrus stated, "It was incredibly disappointing that the year didn't go as the seniors and I expected However, making memories with this group of girls is something I will always cherish." The graduating seniors include Captains Katelyn McClain, Ce'Nedra Cyrus, and Amanda Carsey, defensive players include Stephanie Cedeno, Odine Hong and April Li. These girls made an amazing impression on the underclassmen and proved that they have the skills and opportunity to play college I soccer. . Many of the underclassmen also shined this season. Bre Black and Monica Ray proved they have what * is it takes to compete on a Varsity level. The senior class remains optimistic for the ladies next season, GOOD LUCK!

There were many wins, but not without hard work and lots of drama! This year's setback started with multiple removals from the team; including last year's captains, along with three returning players. Despite the minor problems, the varsity coach, Mr. Huston and the remaining girls, moved on in hopes of having a successful Volleyball season. The team got pumped for the games with the famous Northland Viking quote "Don't Hate NV." Captains Andrea Jordan and Joi Brent had hoped to lead the team to victory but the season was cut short for captain Joi Brent who only played half the season; which could have played part in the girls sad loss of seventeen games and only one win. This year's top players were Anndraya Byrd, Brandi Taylor, Joi Brent, and Andrea Jordan. Although this season didn't go as the ladies had planned, it was a great learning experience for the freshmen and a season full of "Bump, Set, Spike!"

77 Victory was a sweet scent this season for the Viking Boys Basketball team, so much so that the first ever Northaland Nation was created. Decked out in green and gold Northland Nation shirts, students came to every game, home or away. Northland Nation's slogan "the sixth man" was created, explaining how we were so loud and spirited that we affected the game as a sixth man. Home games were always the most packed. Students, parents, and faculty came to support the boys. Northland Nation became stronger as the team progressed during the season. They began to not only wear their Northland Nation Shirts, but green and gold beads, grean and gold face paint, and Viking hats. Students also cheered in the stands with green and gold pom poms and gold Northland Nation towels that were spun in the air. The Cheerleaders also worked with Northland Nation, helping them learn cheers. Together we were always yelling. One of the many highlights of Northland Nation happened during a big Saturday home game. While the opposing team's starting line up was being called, all of Northland Nation simultaneously pulled out newspapers and pretended to read them. Although that was the last time we were allowed to do that, Nortland Nation hyped up the crowd and the team. We accomplished a great deal as a student body. Many schools began to catch on to our school spirit and tried to create their own school spirit team, but none could be better, or louder, than Northland Nation. Seniors hope to create their legacy with the continuing of this new tradtion.

The boys had an amazing season this year,' winning their first City League Championship in 16 years! The team entered championships undefeated and beat the Eastmoor Warriors 59-55. The boys also became the 2007 District Champions, beating the Dublin Coffman Shamrocks 46-45. The amazing undefeated season of the Vikings created an energetic student section, Northland Nation. According to Coach Sullinger, the boys did so well this season because they had great chemistry on the court and were focused on winning. The team was driven by Senior captains Marcus Rose, Tim Russell, and Junior Devon Moore. Senior guard Darron Motion brought great intesnity to the game, as well as 6'5 sophmore Javon - Comely. With the bar set so high, the Vikings have a great deal to strive towards. Next year'stl promises to be another very exciting season! They finally showed that they were ready to go out and compete with the bigger schools when they were victorious over the Mifflin Punchers. It's been eight years since the Lady Vikings beat Mifflin. Another highlight of the season was taking second place in the Olentangy Winter Tournament. Being that most of the varsity will be returning next year, we should be able to eliminate schools such as Brookhaven, Mifflin, and East," commented coach Washington. j The Lady Vikings finished their season with a record of 14-6, This is four more games then the previous year. "This group of young ladies are well on their way, but no matter what, there is always room to improve their game, and remember PLAYERS PLAY!"

2006-2007 Girls JVBasketball Team 83 The 2006-2007 season got off to a rough start after botU of last year's coaches were reassigned to different schools for this school year. Fortunately, the boy's coach, Aaron MacCaughey, came back to coach the team, driving from work at Linden McKinley High School to the pool every day after school. Aside from that, MacCaughey was left to coach both the boys and girls this year. Even with small numbers, the team was able to represent themselves' very well with swimmers competing in the City, Sectional and | District Championships. Junior Max McClary held his own, earning, a place at Districts for the individual 100 Backstroke race. Other swimmers who stood out this season were Sierra Bray and Devon Conelly who entered the season unable to swim without drowning and ended it with successful races under their belt. Their improvement and motivation was assisted by the support of the team captains, Jamie Belisle and Nicole McDaniel (girls team) and Ian Smith and Doug Rogers (boys team). Against other defying odds, the Viking swim team decided to put some "bounce" in their step by adding a small, but commemorable, diving team of Michelle Dippold and Alex Diede. These divers learned more than 6 dives and placed 2nd and 3rd in the City Championshipships. With divers, the girl's team was able to place 2nd in Cities. Next year the team is shaping up to be unstoppable. Left: Sophomore Michelle Dippold sets up for a back dive at the Jewish Community Center

89 This year the varsity baseball team finished with a regular season of 10-10. Coach Washington stated that he planned to use this team to build on. "I could tell there was alot of potential among the team this year, and alot of my players are coming back next year so it gives us a chance to grow. There were only two seniors this year, Jamie Clow and Howard Williams, I wish them the best of luck next year!"

The Lady Vikings got off to a slow start, but picked up steam as the season moved along. Some big wins included Beechcroft, Tree of Life, and Marion Franklin. They were lead by Senior leader Erika Peck who was selected for First Team All-City and All-District. The week began with Character Counts day where everyone wore their "Don't Hate NV" shirts. Tuesday was "Twin Day" and "Dress Up Like Your Favorite Teacher Day," where best friends dressed like each other and students dressed as their favorite teacher. Wednesday was the much anticipated Royal Assembly and "Dress Up Day." The student body wore their nice clothes and cheered for io -.. their favorite homecoming candidate. Thursday celebrated "Rep Your Class w r< < \C Day." Seniors had the most fun with this, wearing green and gold 2007 glasses. Finally, Friday came! Students were decked out in green and gold from head to toe. The parade was that afternoon, with different floats, the homecoming candidates, and the marching band. The winning float went to the Choir, although the seniors put up a good fight with a "007" theme. The day ended witti^ a "BANG" with the football team finally winning a Homecoming game, blowing away the Linden McKinley Panthers 49-0.

The National Honor Society was established in 1921 to recognize outstanding high school students throughout the country. Students in National Honor Society (NHS) must go above and beyond other students, excelling not only in academics, but also in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. This year, the National Honor Society helped organize school functions and fundraisers such as the annual Red Cross blood drive, the Special Olympics track meet. Thanksgiving Gobble grams and much more. The organization has a strong reputation for commitment to service at Northland High School. This year's elected senior officers were Danying Chen (president), Jamie Clow (vice president), Maria Asare (historian), Erika Peck (treasurer) and Ann Shanda (secretary). These NHS President Danying students were responsible for organizing meetings and establishing Chen gives her speech at communication between the students and NHS advisor Jennifer Plemel. the induction Also, this year was the first year where juniors had the opportunity to work with the National Honor Society during the school year, due to the early induction ceremony. All in all, it was a very successful year for Northland's chapter as we inducted 42 juniors and seniors into the National Honor Society in March's induction ceremony. The ceremony consisted of the group reciting the NHS pledge and taking part in the "lighting" ceremony. i

105 Theatre The Theatre department faced many challenges this year, being directly affected by the seven period day. However, with limited time, resources, andpeople, the department was still able to successfully produce two extravagent performances. The first was the fall show. The A^^rJ,featuring a small cast of excellent actors and actresses. The year ended with the brilliant production of Little Shop of Horrors, a satire brought to life by the extrordinary talents of the participating students. Critics raved that Little Shop was a "fantastic piece of work". (Current substitute teacher and thespian, Roderick Wade.) For most seniors, the start of prom begins early in the school year. For ladies it's all about buying that perfect dress, at an affordable price. But sometimes the cost of looking fine and fablous comes at an expensive price, and the ladies at this year's prom weren't holding anything back! As for the guys....well, they were looking pretty handsome themselves. The popular colors worn seemed to be red and white. However, the prom theme colors were teal and purple. Regradless of the colors, everyone at the prom was looking fine and fablous! The prom theme was " If Only For One Night", and it was definitely a memorable night for A.J. Williams and Autumn Conley, who won prom king and queen for the class of 2007! The dance was a huge success with plenty of pictures, dancing, food, drinks and laughter. We made it through our years in high school with no permanant damage, but with priceless memories and experiences to our names. Some say Lives are molded by your frame.' Well, it hasn t always been easy, but our time here at Northland has molded us into the individuals we are today. No matter what our next step in life may be... the work force, military or college, we will always cherish the memories of our alma mater and the friends we ve shared. As freshmen we entered Northland s doors with excitement and potential. As graduates, we must enter a new chapter of our lives with that same excitement and potential. This is our time; time to show the world what the 2007 class can do when we are free from parents and free from limitations. It s time to let go of the security blanket and hit the ground running. Now, we must go out into the world, defying gravity and reaching new heights. Any class with 12 valedictorians, 3 city championships and over $5.6 million in scholarship money is bound to do great things. We are the future. Now it is time to take with us our triumphs and tribulations and carry them into our individual lives. Always remember that each of us has left our mark on Northland High School and it has left its mark on us. No matter what we do or who we become, we will always be Vikings and Northland High will remain a part of us forever. Congratulations Class of 2007.
