  • An Oral History of Berlin Minimal Techno
Menu Search Red Bull Music Academy Daily An Oral History of Berlin Minimal Techno A look back at the stripped-down subgenre that defined the German capital from 1998-2008 September 7, 2018 By Joshua Glazer In 1998, the rave scene that gripped Germany after reunification was at its apex. What had started in the literal underground spaces of post-GDR Berlin after the fall of the Wall had gone mainstream, with millions of young people celebrating the colorful culture of electronic dance music all across the country. But the techno utopia envisioned by many as the new millenium approached was already starting to come undone. The trend was swiftly co-opted – ironically, by some of the same capitalist forces that had defeated the communist system a decade earlier. The bubble soon burst, and many of those truly dedicated to the music were forced to rebuild. The result was something that was the opposite of rave’s over-the- top excess, a movement that idealized a minimalist aesthetic in sound, visuals and fashion. It was a lifestyle that resisted the unbridled exuberance of rave in favor of something more sustainable – and sustain it did, with tracks that filled whole sides of vinyl and parties that went on for days at a time. Berlin became the center for this new creative community, drawing in techno practitioners and aficionados from around the world who came for the party and stayed for the ease of living made possible by cheap rents and easy access to artist visas. “Minimal” became the buzzword around this scene, and while overindulgences were aplenty in freewheeling afterhours, the “arm, aber sexy” (poor but sexy) slogan coined by then-mayor Klaus Wowereit could not have been a more accurate appraisal of Berlin’s appeal.

  • Politics of Electronic Music Purism: Social Space and Label Authenticity in the Netherlands
Politics of electronic music purism: Social space and label authenticity in the Netherlands Master Thesis Student Name: Marko Polovina Student Number: 465938 Supervisor: Erik Hitters Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication Erasmus University Rotterdam June, 2018 i Abstract Since electronic music’s emergence in the mid-1980s, the genre has gained considerable recognition as an unusual and an interesting case study for cultural production dynamics and socio-cultural values in regards to what is considered authentic. The scene in the Netherlands has seen large-scale consumption of more mainstream/accessible off-shoots of electronic music genres such as trance, techno, and house for over two decades. The most significant case studies on electronic music are presented by Thornton (1995) and Hesmondhalgh (1998), generally taking a more broad approach in understanding these definitions within the electronic music dance industry; both share key ideas of technology innovation and convergence of these practices within identity. This thesis attempts to look at the label perspective of the Dutch scene because of its independent and historical connotations associated with the music genre, similarly done by Grote (2014) and Strachan (2007) in other locations and genres in the label perspective. The fact that these labels are independent, but aesthetically appear small-scale, despite at times being the large-scale producer of certain genres, creates a dissonance in the way that cultural capital can be clearly created in this world. Bourdieu’s (1993/1996) cultural capital, specifically the social space aspect, along with Bruno Latour’s (1996) actor network theory is used to understand how music labels in the Dutch electronic music industry in Amsterdam and Rotterdam construct their identities in this network of influences and social space, what they distinctly value as authentic, and ultimately how they perceive authenticity in the current electronic music scene.

At Pineapple Lab in Makati, he showcases his photographs from 80s East Berlin. Photos by SVEN MARQUARDT/GOETHE-INSTITUT PHILIPPINEN/FACEBOOK Manila (CNN Philippines Life) — Lightning struck the walls of the infamous Berlin nightclub, Berghain, but instead of fleeing, the people on the massive dance floor stripped naked, and raved on. The air conditioner broke. The emergency lights went on. Nobody realized what was happening until the music stopped and the lights went o, according to eyewitness reports from several music news sources. The club turned into a sauna filled with topless girls and boys, most of whom were earlier waiting in line outside the club for hours just to get in. No matter how hot the place would get, they would stay. And they would stay long after the sun rises. After all, Berghain is the “world’s most famous” club, as many would call it, with the strictest and most arbitrary door policy. The club’s atmosphere of freedom and hedonism, the top- tier sound system, extensive opening hours (from Saturday midnight to Monday morning), and A-list techno DJs have drawn crowds from all walks of life.

  • First Acts Announced for Melt Festival 2010 Submitted By: Global Publicity Friday, 19 February 2010
First Acts Announced for Melt Festival 2010 Submitted by: Global Publicity Friday, 19 February 2010 Snow and ice still hold us in a wintry spell, so we try to escape by daydreaming about summer. And summer equals festival season and Melt! (http://www.meltfestival.com) is what summer stands for! 'The Dirty Dozen' is history and we proudly present the first confirmations for the 13th edition of Melt!Festival (http://www.meltfestival.com) at the wonderful and unique Ferropolis festival site, set against a breathtaking backdrop of five huge hulking coal mining diggers that tower into the sky. We almost shed a tear on getting this confirmation: The grandmasters of TripHop, Massive Attack, will get the huge diggers at the "City of Iron" to vibrate under the influence of their bass-heavy Bristol sound. As another high-calibre headliner, we are very proud to announce The XX. Rest assured that the aesthetic overall concept of the British trio fits perfectly into the Melt! scenery. Booka Shade will present their new album 'More!' at Melt! and they promise that 'There will be a lot of physical action and sweat on the stage'. Not only new bands will join us in Ferropolis this year. We are also glad to announce some new and strong partners. Bench is our new headline-sponsor and Warsteiner is our new beer-partner. What else? Look forward with us to another British act: The Wombats have booked their tickets to Ferropolis and are presenting their new album. Foals catch up on last years' cancelled gig, OstGut Ton presents the sound of Berghain & Panoramabar, Audiolith Pferdemarkt will be functioning as the official Melt! opening on Thursday, Meltselektor Stage curated by Modeselektor, Blood Red Shoes return to Ferropolis, Video-icon Chris Cunningham in Germany for the first time and exclusively, Techno-legends Carl Craig feat.
