RØDHÅD [Dystopian, Token] – Biography(German Below) RØDHÅD [dystopian, token] – Biography(german below) At the the end of the 1990s Rødhåd laid the groundwork for his DJ-career. He organised small open-air-parties in the outskirts of Berlin just for the fun of it. The word spread quickly far beyond Berlin’s and Germany’s borders about the new kid on the block. His specific style, consisting of Dub-Techno mixed with percussive grooves and his timeless, perfect mixing technique garnered him widespread recognition. In 2009, he launched his own regular club night with himself as resident: DYSTOPIAN. Such legendary locations as the Arena Club, the Tape Club or Horst Krzbrg in Berlin have been witness to these intense club nights. In 2009, he launched his own regular club night with himself as resident: DYSTOPIAN. Such legendary locations as the Arena Club, the Tape Club or Horst Krzbrg in Berlin have been witness to these intense club nights. Around 2010, the famous Berlin club Berghain recognised Rødhåds craft. His sound and his style of mixing fit neatly to the philosophy of this place, and he started DJing there regularly. From then on he had gigs in places all over Europe, such as Trouw (Amsterdam), Concrete (Paris), Rex (Paris), Lux (Lisbon), Fuse (Brussels) and major scene events such as Awakenings, Weather Festival, or Melt Festival. In 2012, he released his first record on his label DYSTOPIAN. Rødhåd’s tracks immediately received praise by Robert Hood, Jeff Mills, Marcel Dettmann, Ben Klock, Luke Slater, Laurent Garnier, Sven Väth, Dave Clarke. Also labels such as Token, CLR & Cocoon became aware of the young producer. He caught his big break in the same year, as he was featured and interviewed as BREAK THROUGH ARTIST OF THE YEAR on the paramount website for electronic music, www.residentadvisor.net. Tours in Japan, Australia and international bookings every weekend followed. Through Artist Of The Year“ interviewte.

  • An Oral History of Berlin Minimal Techno
Menu Search Red Bull Music Academy Daily An Oral History of Berlin Minimal Techno A look back at the stripped-down subgenre that defined the German capital from 1998-2008 September 7, 2018 By Joshua Glazer In 1998, the rave scene that gripped Germany after reunification was at its apex. What had started in the literal underground spaces of post-GDR Berlin after the fall of the Wall had gone mainstream, with millions of young people celebrating the colorful culture of electronic dance music all across the country. But the techno utopia envisioned by many as the new millenium approached was already starting to come undone. The trend was swiftly co-opted – ironically, by some of the same capitalist forces that had defeated the communist system a decade earlier. The bubble soon burst, and many of those truly dedicated to the music were forced to rebuild. The result was something that was the opposite of rave’s over-the- top excess, a movement that idealized a minimalist aesthetic in sound, visuals and fashion. It was a lifestyle that resisted the unbridled exuberance of rave in favor of something more sustainable – and sustain it did, with tracks that filled whole sides of vinyl and parties that went on for days at a time. Berlin became the center for this new creative community, drawing in techno practitioners and aficionados from around the world who came for the party and stayed for the ease of living made possible by cheap rents and easy access to artist visas. “Minimal” became the buzzword around this scene, and while overindulgences were aplenty in freewheeling afterhours, the “arm, aber sexy” (poor but sexy) slogan coined by then-mayor Klaus Wowereit could not have been a more accurate appraisal of Berlin’s appeal.

  • Politics of Electronic Music Purism: Social Space and Label Authenticity in the Netherlands
Politics of electronic music purism: Social space and label authenticity in the Netherlands Master Thesis Student Name: Marko Polovina Student Number: 465938 Supervisor: Erik Hitters Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication Erasmus University Rotterdam June, 2018 i Abstract Since electronic music’s emergence in the mid-1980s, the genre has gained considerable recognition as an unusual and an interesting case study for cultural production dynamics and socio-cultural values in regards to what is considered authentic. The scene in the Netherlands has seen large-scale consumption of more mainstream/accessible off-shoots of electronic music genres such as trance, techno, and house for over two decades. The most significant case studies on electronic music are presented by Thornton (1995) and Hesmondhalgh (1998), generally taking a more broad approach in understanding these definitions within the electronic music dance industry; both share key ideas of technology innovation and convergence of these practices within identity. This thesis attempts to look at the label perspective of the Dutch scene because of its independent and historical connotations associated with the music genre, similarly done by Grote (2014) and Strachan (2007) in other locations and genres in the label perspective. The fact that these labels are independent, but aesthetically appear small-scale, despite at times being the large-scale producer of certain genres, creates a dissonance in the way that cultural capital can be clearly created in this world. Bourdieu’s (1993/1996) cultural capital, specifically the social space aspect, along with Bruno Latour’s (1996) actor network theory is used to understand how music labels in the Dutch electronic music industry in Amsterdam and Rotterdam construct their identities in this network of influences and social space, what they distinctly value as authentic, and ultimately how they perceive authenticity in the current electronic music scene.

  • Petar Dundov: Biography
Petar Dundov: biography What is techno? Scientists and philosophers have long since pondered the concept of its musical definition since it burst out of Detroit in the mid-‘80s. Is it that notion of the “ghost in the machine”, of soul from electronics that its inventors elicited? Or is it more the repetitive throb and thump of 4/4 beats and slow-burning momentum that the Berghain generation are proponents of? Croatian producer Petar Dundov’s stunning music manages to marry both ideals in the most explosive of fashions. To Dundov, “techno is music that precedes movement. It is dance music, solid enough to carry emotions through the dance floor and abstract enough to be a template for ever”. And indeed his breathtaking productions embody this ethos, serving the inherent function of making your body pulse spontaneously while also challenging your brain with its complex melodies and slow-burning, hypnotic progressions. It’s the antidote for anyone who thinks that techno is about senseless, dull looping. Although maybe the word “techno” doesn’t give enough detail about his style, it’s probably the nearest ballpark to whose principles his music adheres – and he is keen to expand the horizons of what people know and expect of the genre. But it’s that sense of his tracks being alive, forever evolving and expanding and increasing in intensity, which gives his music its unique sound and has seen his work crossover into a myriad of different areas of the global electronic music scene. The last two years have seen his mind-bending single Oasis (played by everyone from Dubfire to Sasha to Ben Klock to Prins Thomas to Timo Maas) take the scene by storm with its intricate, ever-changing melodies, John Digweed snap him up for an epic rework of Alan Fitzpatrick’s Reflections, and Gregor Tresher squeeze a deep, mesmerising remix of his track The Life Wire out of him.

At Pineapple Lab in Makati, he showcases his photographs from 80s East Berlin. Photos by SVEN MARQUARDT/GOETHE-INSTITUT PHILIPPINEN/FACEBOOK Manila (CNN Philippines Life) — Lightning struck the walls of the infamous Berlin nightclub, Berghain, but instead of fleeing, the people on the massive dance floor stripped naked, and raved on. The air conditioner broke. The emergency lights went on. Nobody realized what was happening until the music stopped and the lights went o, according to eyewitness reports from several music news sources. The club turned into a sauna filled with topless girls and boys, most of whom were earlier waiting in line outside the club for hours just to get in. No matter how hot the place would get, they would stay. And they would stay long after the sun rises. After all, Berghain is the “world’s most famous” club, as many would call it, with the strictest and most arbitrary door policy. The club’s atmosphere of freedom and hedonism, the top- tier sound system, extensive opening hours (from Saturday midnight to Monday morning), and A-list techno DJs have drawn crowds from all walks of life.
