One of the world’s rarest grape varieties, with its origins in the Northern Rhone and Hermitage regions of France, Tahbilk’s history with Marsanne can be traced back to the 1860’s when White Hermitage cuttings were sourced from ‘St Huberts’ Vineyard in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. The grape in fact was Marsanne and although none of these original plantings have survived, the Estate still has the world’s largest single holding of the varietal and produces Marsanne from TAHBILK MARSANNE AWARDS TO DATE vines established in 1927, which are amongst the oldest in the world. Tahbilk 2013 Marsanne offers aromas of citrus blossom, lemons and grapefruit 26 that are reflected on a fresh and energetic palate of stone fruits, apple and pear. Minerally and tight in its youth, it is sure to become a wine of generosity and 96 honeyed complexity with some bottle age. Tahbilk has been growing Chardonnay since 1979, with the 1988 vintage being the first commercial release. Tahbilk Chardonnay is wooded, with the wine spending from ten to twelve months on yeast lees in a mix of new and older French and American oak barrels. The 2012 release is clean, fresh and textural with pineapple, rock melon and stone fruit characters. Tightly sculptured, background spice and toasty oak notes contribute a further sensorial dimension. Tahbilk’s Estate plantings of Riesling date back to 1957, with the wines produced recognised by their pronounced bouquet and elegance with wonderful flavour and finesse. Originating in Condrieu in France’s Northern Rhone Valley, Viognier is the second of Tahbilk’s Rhone whites, after our iconic Marsanne, and perhaps the most alluring in character. The first plantings of the varietal took place in 1990 with the early acclaim enjoyed by the inaugural 1996 vintage release sustained and enhanced across further vintages. The resultant Shiraz releases are noted as being fruit-driven wines for much flavour and substance, proven over the years to develop added character when cellared. This wine has been made utilising traditional Tahbilk techniques. It was fermented in open oak vats before maturation in French oak for 18 months prior to bottling. Tahbilk has some 28 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon planted on the Estate with the oldest vines dating back to 1949. The wine produced from these plantings have consistently shown considerable richness and character over time with Tahbilk Cabernet Sauvignon considered by many experts to be the best Estate red for long-term cellarage. This release has been made utilising traditional Tahbilk techniques. Fermentation takes place in 150 year old open oak vats, before maturation in French oak for 18 months prior to bottling. “Deep magenta in colour, the nose and palate show a complex mix of blackberries and truffles combined with mint undertones whilst the finish is long and flavoursome TAHBILK CABERNET balanced with fine grain tannins.
