This year, utilizing the PACE (People Advancing Change Through Evidence) Grant we received from the Center for Excellence for Children and Youth Mental Health, we identified an evidence-informed program that is suitable to better meet the needs of youth with more complex needs. We invested significantly in our counselling staff to develop Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), a more intensive therapy approach, as a skill. Our staff began working with youth and children and their caregivers this year.

I have never hid my past at Delisle. There is nothing to hide. I see now how lucky I was. Our In-School Programs give us a very unique vantage point where we really meet the needs of youth right on their ‘home turf’. In partnership with the Toronto District The In-School School Board (TDSB), our program is available at six TDSB secondary schools and provides confidential onsite counselling, group support and advocacy to high school Program helps students grappling with social, emotional, behavioural, and/or psychiatric difficulties. Rather than having case workers or parents call multiple residences to find openings in a mental health residential program for their child, this program acts as a central gateway, helping match a youth’s needs with the appropriate residence. Operated on behalf of the Toronto office of the Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS), C.A.R.S. often finds solutions for the most challenging and complex needs. Our program is critical because young people with the greatest needs within Toronto have been served as a result of our determination to find answers and solutions.

This year we took on the added responsibility of administering newly-added funding resources through the local regional office Residential Placement Advisory of MCYS. We distribute funds to support the transitional stages of residential placement from admission through discharge, as well as funding specialist assessments as needed. Committee Toronto (RPAC)

Her needs were greater than the community-based services working with her family could support. When the Special Needs Team became involved six years ago, they enabled Sarah to enter into a residential placement. With the help of the creative, enthusiastic and caring staff, Sarah’s behaviour improved dramatically.

One staff member noticed that Sarah loved to make soap, lip gloss and bath salts. Staff in the home, in consultation with Sarah’s mother, had the idea to start a cottage business for Sarah. And so “Sarah’s Soap” was open for business. Sarah began to sell her products and use her earnings to purchase more supplies and an occasional treat. Sarah’s mother could not be happier with Sarah’s independence and ability!

Through their relationship with Delisle, the Muir family, daughters, Katie and Jennifer and mom Mary, have hosted and spearheaded the first James’ Journey and raised almost $25,000 through their initiative. “Over and above raising money for Delisle,” says Mary, “it’s the fact that we’re talking about mental health and bringing awareness to other families and their children.”

The daughters believe that “the goal for us is to try and better the world we live in because these are desperate times for some people out there and that is an unfortunate reality. The best thing about giving back is that it’s not just good for Delisle and their clients, it’s good for us as well.

Counting jellybeans was just the beginning – The Isbister family

Lauryn and Nicolas Isbister were raised in a family that believes deeply in the importance and value of philanthropy. Lauryn and Nicolas have been involved in giving back to Delisle in numerous ways. Everything from helping count jellybeans for snack bags for Delisle’s 40th Anniversary celebration to going out with their parents and purchasing winter clothes to give to those youth and children most in need at Delisle.

Lauryn sums up why they like giving back to Delisle: “We like it because we’re really going out and doing something that can help other people. And we think that it’s good to do that and we want to keep on doing that.”
