Stoner 2013 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT RECONSIDERING RANDY SHILTS: EXAMINING THE REPORTAGE OF AMERICA’S AIDS CHRONICLER The role of openly-gay reporter and author Randy Shilts (1951-1994) is examined related to his use of journalistic practices and places him on a continuum of traditional reporting roles as considered in the context of twentieth century philosophers Walter Lippmann and John Dewey. Reporter functions demonstrated by Shilts are examined, including those dictated by expectations of either strong journalistic influence over society and media consumers, or those more aligned with democratic practices where education and participation emphasize strong roles for society and media consumers. Using a biographical approach including 17 primary source interviews of former colleagues, critics, sources and family/friends, the examination of Shilts’s work as both a reporter and noted author is presented as being heavily influenced by his forthcoming attitudes about disclosure of his sexual orientation from the start of his career and his desire to explain or unpack aspects of gay culture, and ultimately the AIDS crisis, to heterosexual audiences. Careful examination of the posthumous critique of Shilts’s work – including his construction of Patient Zero – is undertaken. The study concludes that Shilts fully engaged a Lippmann-esque approach embodied in an authoritarian role for journalism that sought to change the world in which it was offered, and did so perhaps most influentially during the earliest days of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in America.

  • The First World AIDS Day
    1 On June 5, 1981, the United States Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued its first warning about a relatively rare form of pneumonia among a small group of young gay men in Los Angeles, which was later deter- mined to be AIDS-related. Since that time, tens of millions of people have been infected with HIV worldwide. The Global HIV/AIDS Timeline is designed to serve as an ongoing reference tool for the many political, scientific, cultural, and community developments that have occurred over the history of the epidemic. Started in 1988, World AIDS Day is not just about raising money, but also about increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education. In 1959, The first known case of HIV in a human occurs in a person who died in the Congo, later confirmed as hav- ing HIV infection from his preserved blood samples. The authors of the study did not sequence a full virus from his samples, writing that "attempts to amplify HIV-1 fragments of >300 base pairs were unsuccessful, . Howev- er, after numerous attempts, four shorter sequences were obtained" that represented small portions of two of the six genes of the complete AIDS virus. Whenever I was able to summon the courage to disclose to someone that my own father was a Person With AIDS3, inevitably, the next question would be “How did he get it?” The practiced answer that I usually gave was “Why does it matter?” but the implication was that it would have been a terrible shame if it was from a blood transfusion, but it was justice if he had been in a gay relationship or an IV drug user. The paper discusses these major films that deal with HIV/AIDS, as well as a few "gay" films. It also provides many questions for discussion that can be used in the classroom, both general questions about HIV/AIDS and questions geared toward the specific film. Among the paper's conclusions are that, since mass media films are geared to the conventional audience, they tend to have certain characteristics--on the negative side, they are about dying and give a narrow portrayal of sexuality--the more positive side seems to be in the portrayal of family and community.

Mapenzi Joy Smith Director: Dr. Beth Lanning, Ph.D., MCHES People living with HIV who perceive high levels of HIV-related stigma are more likely to abstain from testing and treatment for HIV and experience negative feelings towards themselves due to their positive HIV status. The perception of stigma directly impacts their health and wellbeing. This aim of this thesis is to investigate the relationship between rhetoric and health outcomes for those living with HIV/AIDS to understand better the role that health communication may play in forming and perpetuating stigma for this population. To evaluate this relationship, articles from The New York Times, The New York Native, The Washington Post and excerpts from Randy Shilt’s book And the Band Played On detailing the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States between 1981 and 1990 were assessed as a comprehensive narrative to analyze the portrayal of those infected with or at high risk HIV/AIDS. Maurice Charland’s theory of Constitutive Rhetoric was used as a rhetorical approach to determine the implications of audience identification on public perception of the virus and public perception of themselves concerning the virus. This analysis uncovered that negatively constituted identities might result in stigmatization, marginalization, and discrimination towards a specific population, which in turn, may lead to poor health outcomes. This research provides new insight on the power of scientific narratives and seeks to caution the media on how the construction of scientific narratives, specifically narratives that can constitute identity, may directly impact an individual’s health outcomes.
