Mira is a shortened Latin term meaning, “brightest star,” and the awards were established by teachers to recognize students who demonstrate talents in the creative arts. It includes information on all pubic and private schools that participated in Florida School Music Association sanctioned district and state Music Performance Assessments during the 2002-03 school year. The report is arranged by school district in alphabetical order. The following page includes a brief explanation of the various codes and terms used in this report. The Florida School Music Association (FSMA) coordinates and oversees all interscholastic music activities in the state of Florida. FSMA membership is required for schools that wish to participate in state sanctioned interscholastic music activities. FSMA sanctions the Florida Bandmaster’s Association (FBA), the Florida Orchestra Association (FOA), and the Florida Vocal Association (FVA) to sponsor District and State Music Performance Assessments for bands, orchestras, and choruses in Florida high schools, junior high schools, and middle schools. FSMA also sanctions student participation in the All-State performing ensembles sponsored by the Florida Music Educators’ Association (FMEA).     Abstract “The Integration of the Episcopal Day School of Christ Church, Pensacola: A Local History of Race” Michael Patrick Hoffman Project under the direction of Professor Benjamin John King In 1966, the Episcopal Day School of Christ Church Parish accepted its first African American student, Robert Joseph, into kindergarten. This project surveys the history of race in Pensacola through the colonial era highlighting the particular diversity of the city. The situation for African Americans in Pensacola deteriorated after 1890, with the introduction of Jim Crow laws and discrimination typical of a city of the American South. The decision to integrate Episcopal Day School in 1966 was in the context of the local civil rights movement and the legal push for the integration of the public school system. The history of Christ Church is included with an emphasis on race and the church’s attempts at education. Finally, the decision to integrate the school is considered, with attention given to the role of the rector, the Reverend Beverly Madison Currin, and the Joseph family. Fred, the first thing I’d like you to do, if you will, is to give me your full name. L: It’s Fredric Gerson Levin. P: Was it always spelled Fredric that way? Never with a “K”? L: Never with a “K.” P: Where does the Gerson come from? L: I’m really not sure. P: Family? L: I’m really not sure. It was always a funny name to me, and back early, I think even when I did my Social Security [card], I was so embarrassed by the Gerson name [that] I put on my Social Security card “Fred George Levin.” P: You gave yourself a new middle name. L: A new middle name, but then eventually it got straightened out. The “Fredric” was spelled the way Fredric March, my mother told me that she liked that way. P: I like saying him, too.
