The tribe Aelurillini (7 genera, 27 species) is represented in 16 states and in 2 union territories, Euophryini (10 genera, 16 species) in 14 states and in 4 union territories, Leptorchestini (2 genera, 3 species) only in 2 union territories, Plexippini (22 genera, 73 species) in all states except Mizoram and in 3 union territories, and Salticini (3 genera, 11 species) in 15 states and in 4 union terrioties. West Bengal harbours maximum number of species, followed by Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. Out of 129 species of the spiders listed, 70 species (54.3%) are endemic to India. Gnaphosidae We studied the impact of sheep and goat grazing on 50 assemblages of ground spiders (Araneae: Gnaphosidae) in Crete phryganic, maquis and forest habitats from zero to 2000 m elevation on Crete, Greece using pitfall traps for one Maquis year at each sampling site. In total, 58 gnaphosid species and 16,592 individuals were collected. Cretan endemic Livestock grazing Gnaphosidae were negatively affected by intensive grazing and, contrary to findings on other taxa studied on the Habitat degradation island, they were sparse and rare throughout the study area. The species composition of gnaphosid assemblages was primarily determined by elevation. Trachyzelotes lyonneti, Urozelotes rusticus, Zelotes scrutatus, Anagraphis pallens and Berinda amabilis proved to be significant indicators of overgrazing. The vast majority of spiders belonging to synanthropic and nationally red-listed species were found in overgrazed sites. -

Pollard Department of Zoology, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand KEY WORDS: salticids, salticid eyes, Portia, predatory versatility, aggressive mimicry ABSTRACT Salticids, the largest family of spiders, have unique eyes, acute vision, and elaborate vision-mediated predatory behavior, which is more pronounced than in any other spider group. Diverse predatory strategies have evolved, including araneophagy,aggressive mimicry, myrmicophagy ,and prey-specific preycatch- ing behavior. Salticids are also distinctive for development of behavioral flexi- bility, including conditional predatory strategies, the use of trial-and-error to solve predatory problems, and the undertaking of detours to reach prey. Predatory behavior of araneophagic salticids has undergone local adaptation to local prey, and there is evidence of predator-prey coevolution. Trade-offs between mating and predatory strategies appear to be important in ant-mimicking and araneo- phagic species. E-mail: [email protected] The Indo-pacific araneid genus Anepsion, with A. rhomboides (L. Koch, 1867) as the type species, was erected by Strand in 1929. He proposed the name Anepsion as a replacement name for Anepsia L. Koch, 1871, preoccupied by Anepsia Gistl, 1848, a dipteran genus (OBIS Australia, 2015). The genus was revised by Chrysanthus (1961, 1969) and currently has 16 described species and 1 subspecies (World Spider Catalog 2015). In the present paper, we are reporting the genus from India for the first time and synonymising Cyrtarachne keralensis Jose, 2011 with Anepsion maritatum O. Pickard- Cambridge, 1877. A redescription and illustrations of both male and female of A. maritatum are provided. The specimens were preserved in 70% ethanol and studied under a Zeiss Stemi 2000-C stereomicroscope. All measurements are in millimetres. Length of palp and leg segments are given as: total (femur, patella, tibia, metatarsus (except palp), tarsus). Drawings were made with the aid of a drawing tube attached to the microscope. -

Abstract The contribution summarizes previously unpublished data and adds records of newly collected cave-dwelling spiders from the Balkan Peninsula. New data on the distribution of 91 species from 16 families, found in 157 (27 newly established) underground sites (caves and artificial galleries) are reported due to 337 original records. Twelve species are new to the spider fauna of the caves of the Balkan Peninsula. The species Histopona palaeolithica (Brignoli, 1971) and Hoplopholcus longipes (Spassky, 1934) are reported for the first time for the territory of Balkan Peninsula, Centromerus cavernarum (L. (2009),24(1-3): 2 In memoriam JEAN-PIERRE MAELFAIT Kortrijk 01/06/1951 Gent 06/02/2009 Jean-Pierre Maelfait is ons ontvallen op 6 februari van dit jaar. We brengen hulde aan een man die veel gegeven heeft voor de arachnologie in het algemeen en meer specifiek voor onze vereniging. Jean-Pierre is altijd een belangrijke pion geweest in het bestaan van ARABEL. Hij was medestichter van de “Werkgroep ARABEL” in 1976 en op zijn aanraden werd gestart met het publiceren van de “Nieuwsbrief” in 1986, het jaar waarin ook ARABEL een officiële vzw werd. Hij is eindredacteur van de “Nieuwsbrief” geweest van 1990 tot en met 2002. Sinds het ontstaan van onze vereniging is Jean-Pierre achtereenvolgens penningmeester geweest van 1986 tot en met 1989, ondervoorzitter van 1990 tot en met 1995 om uiteindelijk voorzitter te worden van 1996 tot en met 1999. Pas in 2003 gaf hij zijn fakkel als bestuurslid over aan de “jeugd”. Dit afscheid is des te erger omdat Jean- Pierre er na 6 jaar afwezigheid terug een lap ging op geven, door opnieuw bestuurslid te worden in 2009 en aldus verkozen werd als Secretaris. Alle artikels in dit nummer opgenomen worden naar hem opgedragen. Jean-Pierre Maelfait nous a quitté le 6 février de cette année. Nous rendons hommage à un homme qui a beaucoup donné dans sa vie pour l’arachnologie en général et plus particulièrement pour Arabel. Jean-Pierre a toujours été un pion important dans la vie de notre Société. -

Our pilot preservation project aimed to obtain, expertly identify, and permanently preserve a quarter of the known spider species diversity shared between Slovenia and Switzerland, estimated at 275 species. We here report on the faunistic part of this project, which resulted in 324 species (227 in Slovenia, 143 in Switzerland) for which identification was reasonably established. This material is now preserved in cryobanks, is being processed for DNA barcoding, and is available for genomic studies.
