A number of unusual features 36 distinguish this genome from other chelicerate and arthropod mitochondrial genomes. Most of 37 the transfer RNA gene sequences are greatly reduced in size and cannot be folded into typical 38 cloverleaf-shaped secondary structures. At least nine of the tRNA sequences lack the potential to 39 form TYC arm stem pairings, and instead are inferred to have TV-replacement loops. 40 Furthermore, sequences that could encode the 3' aminoacyl acceptor stems in at least 10 tRNAs 41 appear to be lacking, because fully paired acceptor stems are not possible and because the 42 downstream sequences instead encode adjacent genes. Hence, these appear to be among the 43 smallest known tRNA genes. -

The Complete Mitochondrial Genome of Endemic Giant Tarantula
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN The Complete Mitochondrial Genome of endemic giant tarantula, Lyrognathus crotalus (Araneae: Theraphosidae) and comparative analysis Vikas Kumar, Kaomud Tyagi *, Rajasree Chakraborty, Priya Prasad, Shantanu Kundu, Inderjeet Tyagi & Kailash Chandra The complete mitochondrial genome of Lyrognathus crotalus is sequenced, annotated and compared with other spider mitogenomes. It is 13,865 bp long and featured by 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), and two ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs), 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), and a control region (CR). Most of the PCGs used ATN start codon except cox3, and nad4 with TTG. Comparative studies indicated the use of TTG, TTA, TTT, GTG, CTG, CTA as start codons by few PCGs. Most of the tRNAs were truncated and do not fold into the typical cloverleaf structure. Further, the motif (CATATA) was detected in CR of nine species including L. crotalus. The gene arrangement of L. crotalus compared with ancestral arthropod showed the transposition of fve tRNAs and one tandem duplication random loss (TDRL) event. Five plesiomophic gene blocks (A-E) were identifed, of which, four (A, B, D, E) retained in all taxa except family Salticidae. However, block C was retained in Mygalomorphae and two families of Araneomorphae (Hypochilidae and Pholcidae). Out of 146 derived gene boundaries in all taxa, 15 synapomorphic gene boundaries were identifed. TreeREx analysis also revealed the transposition of trnI, which makes three derived boundaries and congruent with the result of the gene boundary mapping. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference showed similar topologies and congruent with morphology, and previously reported multi-gene phylogeny. However, the Gene-Order based phylogeny showed sister relationship of L. -

Simple Summary: The classification of Lampyridae has been extensively debated. Although some recent efforts have provided deeper insight into it, few genes have been analyzed for Cyphonocerinae in the molecular phylogenies, which undoubtedly influence elucidating the relationships of fireflies. In this study, we generated the first complete mitochondrial genome for Cyphonocerinae, with Cyphonocerus sanguineus klapperichi as the representative species. The comparative analyses of the mitogenomes were made between C. sanguineus klapperichi and that of well-characterized species. The results showed that the mitogenome of Cyphonocerinae was conservative in the organization and characters, compared with all other fireflies. No mitochondrial genomes of pseudoscorpions have been published, but the mitochondrial genomes of some lineages of Chelicerata possess unusual features, including short rRNA genes and tRNA genes that lack sequence to encode arms of the canonical cloverleaf-shaped tRNA. -

Spiders are the seventh most diverse order of arthropods globally and are prominent predators in all prairie habitats. In this chapter, a checklist for the spiders of the Prairie Provinces (767 recorded species and 44 possible species) is presented along with an overview of all 26 families that occur in the region. Eighteen of the species from the region are adventive. Linyphiidae is by far the dominant family, representing 39% of all species in the three provinces. Gnaphosidae and Lycosidae each represent 8% and three other families (Salticidae, Dictynidae, and Theridiidae) each account for 7%. A summary of biodiversity studies conducted in the Prairies Ecozone and from transition ecoregions is also provided. The Mixed Grassland Ecoregion has the most distinctive assemblage; Schizocosa mccooki and Zelotes lasalanus are common only in this ecoregion. Other ecoregions appear to harbour less distinctive assemblages, but most have been poorly studied. Lack of professional opportunities for spider systematists in Canada remains a major barrier to the advancement of the taxonomy and ecology of spiders. Résumé. Les aranéides forment le septième ordre le plus diversifi é d’arthropodes dans le monde; ce sont des prédateurs très présents dans tous les habitats des Prairies. -

A new spider species, Harpactea samuili sp. n., from Bulgaria (Araneae: Dysderidae) Stoyan Lazarov1 Abstract: A new species, Harpactea samuili sp. n. (Araneae: Dysderidae), is described and illustrated with male and female specimens collected in Bulgaria (South Pirin Mountain, Kresna Gorge, Rupite). The male palps of this species are similar to these of H. srednogora DIMITROV, LAZAROV, 1999 but embolus is long, falcate and apically pointed. Key words: Harpactea samuili sp. n., maquis, South Pirin Mountain, Rupite Introduction The Dysderidae, a rather species-rich spider family in the Mediterranean countries, shows remark- able diversity in southeastern Europe, and especially on the Balkan Peninsula (PLATNICK 2006, DELTSHEV 1999). However, in terms of the taxonomy and faunistics, there are still quite a few regions remaining insufficiently investigated. One of these is Bulgaria, where in the last decade several new species were discovered and described (see e.g. DIMITROV, LAZAROV 1999, LAZAROV 2006). This process is very likely to continue also in the future. The current paper provides a de- scription of a new species of Harpactea, which was recently discovered in southwestern Bulgaria, in the frames of a scientific project aiming at the inventory of the maquis habitats. Material and Methods The material was collected by pitfall trapping. The traps were filled with 4 % formalin and emp- tied once a month. The colour of the new species is taken from alcohol and formalin preserved specimens. All measurements used in the description are given in mm.
