17722 Bulletin Taitto Bulletin of the Geological Society of Finland, Vol. 75 (1–2) pp. 17–27 Mapping of potentially hazardous elements in the Cambrian– Vendian aquifer system, northern Estonia Enn Karro* and Andres Marandi Institute of Geology, University of Tartu, Vanemuise 46, 51014 Tartu, Estonia Abstract Communities and towns in northern Estonia rely upon either surface waters or ground- water from Cambrian–Vendian aquifer system with limited fresh water resources. The composition of groundwater is controlled, among other factors, by the lithologic compo- sition of water-bearing rocks and sediments. The peculiarities of the rock matrix may local- ly restrict the use of groundwater as a source of water supply. The distribution of fl uorine, barium and arsenic has been studied in northern Estonian water supply wells. The results of the hydrogeochemical mapping enable to delimit the barium anomaly in the Cambri- an–Vendian aquifer system. Vertical distribution of studied compounds and hydraulic con- nection between water-bearing Vendian sediments with underlying crystalline basement refers the weathered basement rocks as the plausible source of barium and fl uorine in groundwater. The elevated concentrations of barium and fl uorine detected in groundwa- ter from North Estonian wells may become a source of growing concern in Estonia. The results of hydrochemical research should be transformed to instructions how to avoid or eliminate the quality problems in the risk areas. Artiklis on vaatluse all Virumaa pühapaigad ning ära on toodud Virumaal praeguseks teada olevate hiite nimekiri. Märksõnad: hiis, looduslik pühapaik, Virumaa Eestis on ajalooliste andmete põhjal teada ligikaudu 800 hiit, neist ligi kuuendik Virumaal. Arvestades, et andmed hiitest on jõudnud meieni läbi aastasadade täis sõdu, taude, otsest hävitamist ja ärakeelamist ning usundilise maailmapildi muutumist, on see aukartustäratav hulk. Hiis ühendab kogukonda ja laiemalt rahvast. Hiis täidab õige erinevaid ülesandeid ning on midagi enamat kui looduskaitseala, kooskäimis- või tantsu- koht, vallamaja, haigla, kalmistu, kirik, kohtumaja, kindlus või ohvrikoht. Hiie suhtes puudub tänapäeval kohane võrdlus. Hiis on hiis. Ajalooliste looduslike pühapaikade hulgas moodustavad hiied eraldi rühma. Hiienimelised paigad on ajalooliselt levinud peamiselt põhja pool Tartu – Viljandi – Pärnu joont (Valk 2009: 50). Lõuna pool võidakse sarnaseid pühapai- kasid nimetada kergo-, kumarus-, pühä-, ahi- vm paigaks. Kuid ka Virumaal ei nimetata hiiesarnaseid paiku alati hiieks. Selline on näiteks Lavi pühapaik. Hiietaolisi pühapaikasid leidub meie lähematel ja kaugematel hõimurah- vastel. Sarnased on ka pühapaikadega seotud tõekspidamised ja tavad. Lethaia, Vol. 40, pp. 237–252. The evolution of borings has shown that the morphology of borings is a function of both the borer and its substrate. This study investigated the effect of bryozoan internal skeletal morphology on the dimensions and distribution of borings. One hundred and forty-three trepostome colonies from the Middle and Upper Ordovician strata of northern Estonia were examined. Of these, 80% were matrix entombed, longitudinally sectioned ramose and hemispherical colonies, and 20% were matrix-free hemispherical colonies that allowed examination of the colony surfaces. Seventy-one percent of the ramose colonies were bored, whereas 88% of the hemispherical colonies were bored. On average, only 8% of colony surface areas were bored out. Borings were more ran- domly oriented in the hemispherical colonies. In contrast in the ramose colonies, the borings tended to more restricted to the thin-walled endozone and thus parallel to the branch axis. This is interpreted to be a function of the thick-walled exozones con- trolling to some extent where the borer could bore. Based on morphology, the borings in the hemispherical colonies are referred to Trypanites and those in the ramose colonies to Sanctum. Sanctum is revised to include two possible openings and to recognize that boring shapes were inherently constrained by the thick-walled exozones of the host bryozoan colonies.

Eestis on hetkel 15 maakonda ning 213 omavalitsust, mis jagunevad 183 vallaks ja 30 linnaks. Eelnõuga muudetakse haldusterritoriaalset korraldust Lääne-Viru maakonnas. Hetkel kuulub Lääne-Viru maakonda kaks linna ja 13 valda, pärast haldusterritoriaalse korralduse muutmist jääb maakonda kaks linna ja 12 valda. Omavalitsuste koguarv Eestis väheneb ühe omavalitsuse võrra 212-le, kokku 182 valda ja 30 linna1,2. Ühinevad omavalitsused on3: 1) Haljala vald (pindala 183,0 km2 ja rahvaarv 2459), 2) Vihula vald (pindala 364,3 km2 ja rahvaarv 1930). Eelnõuga rahuldatakse sisuliselt Haljala valla ja Vihula valla esitatud taotlused haldusterritoriaalse korralduse muutmiseks ning moodustatakse nimetatud valdade ühinemise teel uus haldusüksus nimega Lahemaa vald (kogupindala 547,3 km2, rahvaarv 43894). 1.2.
