west coast music Midnight Special Please find attached the Midnight Special song list for your review. SPECIAL DANCES for Weddings: Please note that we will need your special dance requests, (I.E. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Dance etc) FOUR WEEKS in advance prior to your event so that we can confirm that the band will be able to perform the song(s) and that we are able to locate sheet music. In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is need- ed, this gives us the time needed to properly prepare the music and learn the material. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided. Recently, we’ve noticed in increase in cli- ents customizing what the band plays and doesn’t play with very specific detail. If you de- sire the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we ask for a minimum of 100 requests. We want you to keep in mind that the band is quite good at reading the room and choosing songs that best connect with your guests. The more specific/selective you are, know that there is greater chance of losing certain song medleys, mashups, or newly released material the band has. -

Jim O’Rourke American guitarist, vocalist, electronics player & composer (January 18, 1969–) O’Rourke on “Tamper” O’Rourke: "Noone else at school was interested in doing tape music, so the school was mine all the time. Tamper was recorded on 20-year old tape, because I couldn't afford to buy tape. My friend ' s dad was in The Flock, the original band before Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears, and he gave me all these old rehearsal tapes, which I recorded Tamper over. "When I did Tamper, it was all about how acoustic instruments, like the piano, are so defined that people don't listen to their actual sound any more. They listen to a piano playing something as opposed to hearing 15 minutes of sound. I wanted to try to make acoustic instrumental pieces, but by mixing and miking it in such a way that the definitions of the instruments would be gone. One of the things that depresses me about that album is that no-one's ever come up to me and said, 'I can't hear the fucking oboes there, where are they?' Except for the first few minutes of the CD, where there's a low, low oscillator, it's just acoustic instruments. -

COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT ANALYSIS IN MUSIC: KATY PERRY A “DARK HORSE” CANDIDATE TO SPARK CHANGE? Edward M. Christian* ABSTRACT The music industry is at a crossroad. Initial copyright infringement judgments against artists like Katy Perry and Robin Thicke threaten millions of dollars in damages, with the songs at issue sharing only very basic musical similarities or sometimes no similarities at all other than the “feel” of the song. The Second Circuit’s “Lay Listener” test and the Ninth Circuit’s “Total Concept and Feel” test have emerged as the dominating analyses used to determine the similarity between songs, but each have their flaws. I present a new test—a test I call the “Holistic Sliding Scale” test—to better provide for commonsense solutions to these cases so that artists will more confidently be able to write songs stemming from their influences without fear of erroneous lawsuits, while simultaneously being able to ensure that their original works will be adequately protected from instances of true copying. * J.D. Remastering Mothers Micro Commission Artist We are seeking an early-career Birmingham-based artist who can work with JUNEAU PROJECTS on realising REMASTERING MOTHERS; a public art commission in Erdington Town Centre. This is one of a programme of six public realm projects to be delivered in and around north Birmingham, April - October 2021. These commissions will launch our upcoming three-year GALLERY37 NORTH (G37n) arts residency programme for young people. THE ARTIST WE COMMISSION MUST: ● Have some experience of the arts or the creative industries. ● Be based within North Birmingham - we welcome applications from Erdington artists ● Be aged between 18-25 THE ARTIST WE COMMISSION WILL: ● Receive mentoring and supported as part of career development ● Receive £2000 fee and £500 budget to realise own project ● Be given leadership opportunities ● Be involved in community workshops ● Be provided with the opportunity to engage with the fabrication and the installation of the Remastering mothers Sculpture “REMASTERING MOTHERS” Juneau Projects’ Ben Sadler and Philip Duckworth are creating an interactive piece of art with input from the Erdington community. This sculpture will celebrate the creative legacy of Erdington’s “Mothers” music venue during the 1960's-70's. Artists who performed there include Fleetwood Mac, Trac, Roy Harper, Jethro Tull, T- Rex, Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Canned Heat, The Who and Pink Floyd. The artwork will be a focal point for the High Street, and is being jointly produced by Punch, Erdington Arts Forum, Erdington Town City Partnership and Saathi House. And before she was betrothed, all was for the best in the best of all possible shattered worlds. Ophelia was certainly one of the clumsiest Animists, due to an accident with a mirror, but her hands had always produced excellent read - ings of objects and she felt at home in her museum. So, the day Thorn tears her away from her family and her ark to take her to the Pole, it’s her own world that’s shattered. Ophelia discov - ers the Citaceleste, a floating city built on illusions. The nobles there are endowed with dangerous powers and ready for all kinds of treachery to gain the favor of Farouk, their family spirit. He is the half-human, half-divine figure who rules over the Pole, and a disturbing character, to say the least. It doesn’t help that Thorn is the son of a disgraced woman and Treasurer of the Pole, so he’s detested by everyone. With the collusion of his aunt, Berenilde, he hides his fiancée from everyone while awaiting the marriage. First locked away in a manor, then disguised as a valet, Ophelia gets to know the ins and outs of this world that rejects her before even knowing her. And that’s how she finally learns of the existence of Farouk’s Book, an ancient and enigmatic tome with which the family spirit is truly obsessed. -

Chapel Hill 2018 Approved by: Glenn Hinson Patricia Sawin Michael Palm ©2018 Aaron Smithers ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Aaron Smithers: Nightlight: Tradition and Change in a Local Music Scene (Under the direction of Glenn Hinson) This thesis considers how tradition—as a dynamic process—is crucial to the development, maintenance, and dissolution of the complex networks of relations that make up local music communities. Using the concept of “scene” as a frame, this ethnographic project engages with participants in a contemporary music scene shaped by a tradition of experimentation that embraces discontinuity and celebrates change. This tradition is learned and communicated through performance and social interaction between participants connected through the Nightlight—a music venue in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Any merit of this ethnography reflects the commitment of a broad community of dedicated individuals who willingly contributed their time, thoughts, voices, and support to make this project complete.
