Barcelona Is Much More
DISCOVER WINE TOURISM BARCELONA IS MUCH MORE DISCOVER THE JOYS OF WINE TOURISM Although it may seem a modern form of tourism, wine tourism has actually been popular in the Barcelona regions for some time. Back in the early 20th century, our grandparents visited the cellers in a covered trap that ran between the train station and the winery. Another popular custom was to go to a winery on public holidays, where, if you bought something, they would let you cook your own food. That's a thing of the past now and many wineries cater for organised tours, not just to promote their products, but also to familiarise visitors with the world of wine and cava. Some establishments, country houses and winery hotels offer programmes that enable visitors to join in with the work, enjoy wine therapy treatments and take part in tastings and pairings with wine as the star. And for those who like to keep moving, wine tourism offers the chance to do some hiking or cycling on signposted paths through vineyards a stone's throw from Barcelona. Thanks to all this, Barcelona is much more: a destination full of surprises! If you are a lover of fine wine or simply curious about them, you should know that Barcelona has five designations of origin: Penedès, Alella, Pla de Bages, Catalunya and Cava. Each of them produces high- quality wine and cava. At some wineries quality wine is coupled with beautiful PHOTOGRAPHS: architecture because they are Caves Codorníu, Sant Sadurní d’Anoia either Art Nouveau buildings Caves Codorníu, Sant Sadurní d’Anoia from the early 20th Century Vineyards, Vilassar de Dalt or avant-garde structures Mas de Sant Iscle, Sant Fruitós de Bages Caves Freixenet, Sant Sadurní d’Anoia designed by prestigious Vineyards, El Penedès architects. -

Catalan in the Classroom: a Language Under Fire Sara Fowler
Catalan in the Classroom: A Language Under Fire Sara Fowler Hawaii Pacific University Abstract This paper describes the role of Spain’s largest minority language, Catalan, in Spanish society, specifically in the classroom. Throughout its history, Catalan has gone through many cycles of oppression and revival. Currently, despite several decades of positive progress in its official role and a growing number of young speakers, Catalan is facing new challenges once again. Some members of the Spanish government believe that the language of instruction in Catalonia should be Castilian, a development which the citizens of Catalonia feel is an attack on their linguistic rights and identity. Catalan is a well-documented example of the tensions which can arise in a country with a minority language or languages. The Catalan case can also serve as a reminder to English teachers that the politics of language are often more complicated than they seem; teachers must be aware of and sensitive to the cultural and political backgrounds of their students. Introduction It is a fact that linguistic boundaries and political borders are not a perfect match; nevertheless, most people associate one language with one country. For example, the name Spain, for many people, brings to mind one language: Spanish. However, Spanish, or “Castilian” as it is more specifically called, is not the only language in Spain. There are 15 languages spoken in Spain—one official language and three other “co-official” languages, the largest of which is Catalan, spoken as a “mother tongue” by approximately nine percent of the population, compared to five percent speakers of Galician and a mere one percent who speak Euskera (Basque) as a mother tongue (Ethnologue, 2014; European Commission, 2006, p. -
Determinants of Waste Generation Per Capita in Catalonia (North-Eastern Spain): the Role of Seasonal Population
European Journal of Sustainable Development (2016), 5, 3, 489-504 ISSN: 2239-5938 Doi: 10.14207/ejsd.2016.v5n3p489 Determinants of waste generation per capita in Catalonia (North-eastern Spain): the role of seasonal population Òscar Saladié1 Abstract Seasonal population is not taken into account in waste management policies and regional differences in waste generation per capita are magnified. Here I analyze the differences among the Catalan counties (North-eastern Spain) and I compare the results if seasonal population is added or not to the resident people. Waste generation per capita in tourist areas is overestimated and actually the differences among the counties are lower than those indicated in the official data. Only reliable data will allow determining the reasons of differences in waste generation per capita and stablishing more precise objectives in waste management policies. There is a positive correlation between municipal waste generation per capita and the services sector’s contribution to GDP, a negative correlation with the percentage of population over 64 and no correlation with income per capita. Finally, taking into account territorial factors, the lowest waste generation per capita corresponds to counties with very low population densities located in inland Catalonia. Key words: Municipal waste management, seasonal population, determinants of waste generation per capita, Catalonia 1. Introduction There are broad typologies of waste, all with varying behaviour related to environmental agents, potential evolution over time and impacts on environment and human health. The natural ecosystem’s capacity to receive and incorporate waste is limited, and exceeding it can become a serious environmental problem. Waste can be harmful to human health and animal and plant life and may also affect soil, ground water and air quality, including global warming and inadequate management can compromise the sustainability of our development. -
History, Historiography and the Ambiguities of Catalan Nationalism’, In: Studies on National Movements, 1 (2013) Pp
Enric Ucelay-Da Cal HISTORY, HISTORIOGRAPHY AND THE AMBIGUITIES OF CATALAN NATIONALISM This essay shall attempt to address some of the major difficulties encountered in the study of nationalism, with attention focused on Catalan nationalism and Catalan history.1 Precisely because the stress of the interpretation is on ambiguity, this article will use the most ambiguous (if also most common) Catalan term for patriotic or nationalist feelings: catalanisme or, literally, ‘Catalanism’. Both the questions and interpretation presented here are idiosyncratic, rather than representative, given that the author, who, not being a Catalan nor being a convert to the premises of catalanisme, has criteria regarding Catalan nationalism which are not shared by much of the profession in Catalonia, which is indeed partial, if not militant, in its feelings. Nor, it should be added, does he feel any particular regard for the often gratuitous suppositions of Spanish nationalist historians, who are increasing in presence and noise. Can a historian narrate a nationalist movement over time, and in context, without taking sides, without being influenced by the special pleading that all nationalisms, indeed, all social movements, invoke to buttress their case? Can the historian be without compassion, and not respond to the victimised nature of a ‘losing’, that is stateless, nationalism? Can the studious analyst avoid the implicit assumptions hidden in a field, say Hispanism or Hispanic studies, dedicated to the Spanish language and its culture, which is cluttered with doubtful suppositions? Is it even possible Enric Ucelay-Da Cal, ‘History, historiography and the ambiguities of Catalan nationalism’, in: Studies on National Movements, 1 (2013) pp. -

Class, Culture and Conflict in Barcelona 1898–1937
Class, Culture and Conflict in Barcelona 1898–1937 This is a study of social protest and repression in one of the twentieth century’s most important revolutionary hotspots. It explains why Barcelona became the undisputed capital of the European anarchist movement and explores the sources of anarchist power in the city. It also places Barcelona at the centre of Spain’s economic, social, cultural and political life between 1898 and 1937. During this period, a range of social groups, movements and institutions competed with one another to impose their own political and urban projects on the city: the central authorities struggled to retain control of Spain’s most unruly city; nationalist groups hoped to create the capital of Catalonia; local industrialists attempted to erect a modern industrial city; the urban middle classes planned to democratise the city; and meanwhile, the anarchists sought to liberate the city’s workers from oppression and exploitation. This resulted in a myriad of frequently violent conflicts for control of the city, both before and during the civil war. This is a work of great importance in the field of contemporary Spanish history and fills a significant gap in the current literature. Chris Ealham is Senior Lecturer in the Department of History, Lancaster University. He is co-editor of The Splintering of Spain: Historical Perspectives on the Spanish Civil War. His work focuses on labour and social protest in Spain, and he is currently working on a history of urban conflict in 1930s Spain. Routledge/Cañada Blanch Studies
