If there is something to forgive, it would be what in religious language is called mortal sin, the worst, the unforgivable crime or harm. From which comes the aporia, which can be described in its dry and implacable formality, without mercy: forgiveness forgives only the unforgivable. One cannot, or one should not, forgive; there is only forgiveness, if there is any, where there is the unforgivable.” 3 Insofar as only that which could never be forgiven could be forgiven, Derrida teaches us that the very possibility of forgiveness lies in its impossibility.     Stacey Abbott Walking the Fine Line Between Angel and Angelus [1] Much of the discussion and analysis of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer has focused upon the show’s moral complexity in its representation of good and evil. Joss Whedon’s world is a world of grays rather than crisp black and white oppositions. The character Angel, the vampire with a soul, was one of the earliest introductions of this ambiguity into the series. The slayer and her friends were forced to accept that a vampire could be good. Difficult to accept but not as difficult as a loving boyfriend who can turn evil over night . again embodied in Angel. He offered the young Slayer, her friends and the audience a lot to think about in those first two seasons. While initially morally complex, as the series has developed and explored the far reaches of moral ambiguity through the actions of all of the Scooby Gang, Angel’s representation seems too neatly split across polar oppositions: the good Angel versus the evil Angelus. These two sides of Angel have been described by Beth Braun as “tortured soul” and “soulless demon” (90) and by Mary Alice Money as “soulful vampire extraordinaire” and “evil über-vampire” (98-99). [2] Rhonda V. Wilcox suggests, in “Every Night I Save You: Buffy, Spike, Sex and Redemption,” “[that] since Angel is good because he possesses a soul, he still represents an essentialist definition of good.” This is in contrast to the vampire Spike, who, she argues, “owns no human soul, yet repeatedly does good; if he can be seen as capable of change, capable of good, capable of love, then he can represent an existentialist definition of good” (paragraph 15).

God’s Word as recorded in scripture is our written rule for faith and discipleship. However, it is not a static document, but rather, “living and active” (Hebrews 4:12). By the power of the Holy Spirit, as we gather around the Word in the context of community, God still speaks to us. As we prepare for discussions about the compelling vision at Annual Conference and as your congregation imagines what it might look like to live into the vision, we encourage you to spend time in Bible study and prayer. We have designed this Bible study series to help you do just that. Each of the thirteen studies focuses on a different word or phrase from the compelling vision, inviting us to engage with God’s Word with the hope of deepening and enriching our understanding of each word or phrase in particular and the vision as a whole.     Level: 2 Grade: 2 God Loves Us, No Matter What! In this unit students learn about forgiveness and reconciliation. In Part 1 they explore the parable of The Prodigal Son/The Forgiving Father with a focus on the actions and responses of each character, and relate the teachings of this parable to their own experiences. In Part 2 students learn about how the Catholic community celebrates God’s forgiveness and the reconciliation between people in the sacrament of Penance. DOCTRINAL FOCUS In planning to teach this unit the following references from the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church are recommended: #211 The divine name ‘I Am’ or ‘He Is’ expresses God's faithfulness: despite the faithlessness of men's sin and the punishment it deserves, he keeps ‘steadfast love for thousands’. By going so far as to give up his own Son for us, God reveals that he is ‘rich in mercy’. By giving his life to free us from sin, Jesus reveals that he himself bears the divine name: ‘When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you will realise that “I AM’’ ’. The angel announced to Joseph: ‘You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins’.     Safe as Churches: Forgiving the Unforgiveable? Introduction This title, ‘forgiving the unforgiveable?’ is deliberate. We may interpret it as asking whether there really is anything that is unforgiveable, or we may understand it to mean that there are indeed things that are unforgiveable and, confronted with such events, what is the response of forgiveness. I think there is a constant interplay between these two meanings. Furthermore I do think that from time to time we encounter situations where the word ‘unforgiveable’ springs naturally to mind and on such occasions we do not take ourselves to speaking metaphorically or symbolically. At the moment we say or think, ‘That’s unforgiveable,’ we really mean it. Now I will suggest that it’s just across such a threshold that forgiveness when and where offered, seeks to engage most fully. I have key points about forgiveness to which I would like to draw your attention. There is not sufficient time to develop any of them with the sufficiency they deserve, but I hope by digging into one particular theme (forgiveness and memory) I may be able to show the interrelationship between some of these points. 1. Forgiveness, where and when offered, is inevitably accusatory. To say, ‘I forgive you,’ is to entail, ‘I accuse you.’ And if I accept that offer of forgiveness, I implicitly accept the accusation, too. Forgiveness implies a recognition on the part of both the victim and the perpetrator of the state of affairs that led to the offer of forgiveness.
