COUNSELORS (BSC) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) Twenty-Fourth Meeting June 19-20, 2018 CDC Chamblee Campus Atlanta, Georgia 30341 Summary Proceedings The twenty-fourth meeting of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) Board of Scientific Counselors (BSC) was convened Tuesday June 19, 2018 and Wednesday June 20, 2018 in person. The BSC met in open session in accordance with the Privacy Act and the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA). Dr. Christina Porucznik served as chair. Tuesday, June 19, 2018 Call to Order / Roll Call / Introductions / Meeting Logistics Christina A. Porucznik, PhD, MSPH Chair, NCIPC BSC Associate Professor, Department of Family and Preventive Medicine University of Utah Dr. Porucznik called to order the twenty-forth meeting of the NCIPC BSC at 8:30 AM on Tuesday, June 19, 2018. She requested that Mrs. Tonia Lindley, NCIPC Committee Management Specialist, call the roll. Mrs. Tonia Lindley conducted a roll call of NCIPC BSC members and Ex Officios, confirming that a quorum was present. The roll also was called following each break and lunch to ensure that quorum was maintained. Quorum was maintained throughout the day. A list of meeting attendees is appended to the end of this document as Attachment A. The following conflicts of interest (COIs) were declared: Wilson Compton, MD, MPH reported that he has long-term stock holdings in General Electric, 3M Companies, and Pfizer. The remainder of BSC members and Ex Officios reported no COIs. Dr. Porucznik welcomed the BSC members and ex officio members, thanking them for their continued commitment and willingness to attend the meeting in-person or via telephone. She emphasized that she continued to be impressed to their dedication to injury and violence prevention, as well as good and efficient use of the country’s resources. She indicated that participants who wished to follow along with the presentations could access them on the NCIPC BSC webpage, and that the minutes of the meeting would become part of the official record and would be posted to the CDC Management Analysis and Services Office (MASO) website once completed and approved. In addition, she reviewed housekeeping / logistics and requested that members participating via teleconference or Adobe Connect send an email to 4 Draft Meeting Minutes: Excerpt NCIPC Board of Scientific Counselors June 19-20, 2018 [email protected] acknowledging their participation in the meeting. Dr. Porucznik thanked members of the public attending the meeting in-person and via telephone. She expressed appreciation for their interest and their voice and indicated that time would be allotted at 11:10 AM should anyone wish to provide public comments so that the NCIPC BSC could take them into consideration during their deliberations. Approval of Last Meeting Minutes Dr. Porucznik referred members to the copy of the minutes from the February 26, 2018 NCIPC BSC meeting included in their binders. With no revisions proposed, she called for an official vote. Motion / Vote Dr. Hedlund made a motion to approve the February 26, 2018 NCIPC BSC meeting minutes. Dr. Duwve seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously with no abstentions. CDC Director’s Update / NCIPC Director’s Update / Budget Update CDC Director’s Update Anne Schuchat, MD (RADM, USPHS) Principal Deputy Director Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Via Video Dr. Schuchat thanked the members for their hard work on the NCIPC BSC and for providing insight to the NCIPC and guidance on important and challenging public health issues in injury and violence prevention. She offered special thanks for members and Ex Officio members from across the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for all of their efforts to provide feedback in the development of the 2016 CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain. She pointed out that this NCIPC BSC meeting would address another key area connected with the opioid epidemic, stressing how important this is to the health of the nation and how grateful CDC is for their expertise and time.     ABOUT FACE: ASIAN REPRESENTATIONS OF AUSTRALIA Alison Elizabeth Broinowski 12 December 2001 A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University ii Statement This thesis is my own work. Preliminary research was undertaken collaboratively with a team of Asian Australians under my co-direction with Dr Russell Trood and Deborah McNamara. They were asked in 1995-96 to collect relevant material, in English and vernacular languages, from the public sphere in their countries of origin. Three monographs based on this work were published in 1998 by the Centre for the Study of Australia Asia Relations at Griffith University and these, together with one unpublished paper, are extensively cited in Part 2. The researchers were Kwak Ki-Sung, Anne T. Nguyen, Ouyang Yu, and Heidi Powson and Lou Miles. Further research was conducted from 2000 at the National Library with a team of Chinese and Japanese linguists from the Australian National University, under an ARC project, ‘Asian Accounts of Australia’, of which Shun Ikeda and I are Chief Investigators. Its preliminary findings are cited in Part 2. Alison Broinowski iii Abstract This thesis considers the ways in which Australia has been publicly represented in ten Asian societies in the twentieth century. It shows how these representations are at odds with Australian opinion leaders’ assertions about being a multicultural society, with their claims about engagement with Asia, and with their understanding of what is ‘typically’ Australian. It reviews the emergence and development of Asian regionalism in the twentieth century, and considers how Occidentalist strategies have come to be used to exclude and marginalise Australia.

    "From Quong Tarts to Victor Changs: Being Chinese in Australia in the Twentieth Century" Public seminar at the ANU, 24 May 2000 Henry Chan - Honorary Fellow, School of Science and Technology Studies, University of New South Wales NOTE: Parts of this paper formed the introduction to one that was the closing address at the "Chinese Heritage in Australian Federation" conference in Melbourne on 2 July 2000. Abstract Recently some Australian scholars and historians have reasserted that there must be an Anglo-Celtic "central core" to the Australian identity and that they see this "central core" as being threatened by an equally mythical set of "Asian values". This lecture will challenge such assertions. It will begin with a discussion of the contributions Chinese have made to Australian life and society since Federation and then go on to show how Chinese-Australians have already and will continue to contribute to the development of a truly Australian identity for the Twenty-first century. Introduction It is now a truism to assert that we are living in the midst of a globalising age. The twenty-first century will see a vast acceleration of the movement of peoples, goods, and knowledge across national borders. Flexible transnational citizens will probably become the norm as notions of the nation, nation identity, nationalism will be questioned and even jettisoned. Australia is already a typical immigrant society of twenty-first century, diversity of peoples and cultures. The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimated that 23% of the Australian population in 1998 were overseas born and the 1996 Census showed that a further 27% of persons born in Australia had at least one overseas born parent.

    Chapter 4. The Contemporary Sicilian-Australian Music Scene in Sydney 131 4.1. Introduction To illustrate the presence of Italian/Sicilian folk music in Sydney, I have developed this chapter in nine sections. I shall start by defining which kind of music has been of interest in my Sydney research (4.2); following, I will introduce the Italian record circulation and the Italian song festivals in Sydney (4.3), which are important to understand how the music culture in the Sicilian musical scene has grown and developed. The core of the Chapter will consist of a description of the feste1 (Feasts) of Protector Saints important to the Sicilian community. I shall start by introducing what a festa is; a description of four feste I attended in Sydney will follow, together with a description and analysis of the types of music which are found in these celebrations and their main exponents (4.4). After having considered the festive context, I shall list and analyse some of the major protagonists in the Sicilian musical scene on occasions which are unrelated to religious practices: clubs frequented or founded by Sicilian emigrants, retirement villages (Scalabrini Villages) and home gatherings (4.5 and 4.6). A section describing and analysing the two Sicilian folkloristic groups which have been active in Sydney in the 1980s and 1990s will follow, as they take part in both feste and other, lay, community events (4.7). An in- depth study of two of the major protagonists of the Italian/Sicilian folk (and also non- folk) scene will follow, granting special attention to their career and their multi- functional roles in the community (4.8).

    SCHOOL PROJECT MATERIAL 2018 Dr Victor Chang AC, 1936-1991 Pioneer of modern heart transplant surgery and humanitarian. “Through heart surgery, Dr Victor Chang was able to save hundreds of lives. But he knew that through research, he could save thousands.” Victor Chang AC (1936-1991) Dr Victor Chang was one of Australia’s most gifted heart surgeons, a pioneer of modern heart transplant surgery and a humanitarian. A national hero, Victor Chang was hailed as ‘the most prominent doctor in the southern hemisphere’, and his revolutionary work in the field of heart transplantation had implications for cardiac patients around the globe. Dr Chang personally saved hundreds of lives. In 1984, he led a team of surgeons who successfully performed a heart transplant on schoolgirl, Fiona Coote. At the age of 14, Fiona defied all odds to become Australia’s youngest heart transplant survivor, and some three decades later remains very well. In that same year, Dr Chang founded the National Heart Transplant Program at St Vincent’s Hospital, which has since performed thousands of successful transplants. Dr Chang also played a key role in developing an artificial heart valve and an artificial heart assist device. 1 1 Born in Shanghai to Australian born Chinese parents in 1936, Victor Chang (Yam Him) came to Australia in 1953 and completed his schooling at the Christian Brothers College in Lewisham. In 1962 he graduated from Sydney University with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. After training in cardiothoracic surgery at the Mayo Clinic (USA) and in the UK, he returned to St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney.
