Morelia, Michoacán, México Global climate change represents one of the most important threats to wildlife populations. Amphibians, specifically salamanders, are particularly susceptible to the effects of a changing climate due to their restrictive physiological requirements and low vagility; however, little is known about which amphibian species are more vulnerable to climate change. Therefore, we aimed to forecast changes in the distribution of the mountain stream salamander, Ambystoma ordinarium, using different climate scenarios. Approximately 70 representative presence records were selected to model the current potential distribution and two scenarios based on 2070 climate projections (RCP 2.6 and RCP 8.5) using the MaxEnt algorithm and three global climate models (BCC-CSM1-1, CCSM4 and HadGEM2-ES). A total of three scenarios were simulated using the 10-percentile training presence as the threshold rule. For all scenarios, the average of the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for the replicated runs was greater than 0.95 ± 0.005, representing good performance for the current and projected geographical distributions of A. -

Evaluation of differential white blood cell (leukocyte) counts from thin blood smears is one way to gain this information, and this approach is increasingly being used by herpetologists to gauge the integrity of amphibian populations. This approach is especially useful in natural settings because amphibian leucocyte profiles can vary depending on biological and physiological processes, including those caused by environmental factors. -

Davis1 & Claire Golladay2 Received: 7 March 2019 /Accepted: 9 July 2019 /Published online: 19 July2019 # Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2019 Abstract In this project, red-backed salamanders, Plethodon cinereus, were collected from the heart of their range (Mountain Lake, Virginia, USA), in an effort to document the typical, or baseline, leukocyte profile of this species in its natural state. From microscopic examination of thin blood films, we determined relative proportions of all leukocyte types and determined the ratio of neutrophils to lymphocytes, which is a useful index of stress levels. In addition, individuals were examined for three naturally occurring endoparasites: two gastro-intestinal (trematodes and a ciliated protozoan in the genus Cepedietta) and one in the blood (a Rickettsial bacteria). This allowed us to conduct statistical comparisons of leukocyte data across parasite infection groups. Of 36 salamanders, 11 (31%) had trematode parasites, 7 (19%) contained Cepedietta parasites, 6 (17%) were parasitized by Rickettsia, and 12 had no parasites. The most common leukocytes were lymphocytes (87.4%), followed by neutrophils (4.2%), monocytes (3.3%), eosinophils (2.6%), and basophils (2.5%). The average neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio for these sala- manders was remarkably low (0.05) for an amphibian population. Statistical comparisons of leukocyte profiles among parasite infection groups indicated parasitized salamanders had twice as many circulating leukocytes as nonparasitized individuals, which could be considered an “inflammation response”. -

Fisher Supplemental Information Taxonomic Notes Genera were assigned to families for summarization (Table 1 in main text) and analysis (Table 2 in main text) based on the most recent available comprehensive taxonomic references (Frost et al. 2006, Frost 2008, Frost 2009, Frost 2011). We chose recent family designations to explore patterns of Bd susceptibility and occurrence because these classifications were based on both genetic and morphological data, and hence may more likely yield meaningful inference. Some North American species were assigned to genus according to Crother (2008), and dendrobatid frogs were assigned to family and genus based on Grant et al. (2006). Eleutherodactylid frogs were assigned to family and genus based on Hedges et al. (2008); centrolenid frogs based on Cisneros-Heredia et al. (2007). For the eleutherodactylid frogs of Central and South America and the Caribbean, older sources count them among the Leptodactylidae, whereas Frost et al. (2006) put them in the family Brachycephalidae. More recent work (Heinicke et al. 2007) suggests that most of the genera that were once “Eleutherodactylus” (including those species currently assigned to the genera Eleutherodactylus, Craugastor, Euhyas, Phrynopus, and Pristimantis and assorted others), may belong in a separate, or even several different new families. Subsequent work (Hedges et al. 2008) has divided them among three families, the Craugastoridae, the Eleutherodactylidae, and the Strabomantidae, which were used in our classification. -
Crotalus Tancitarensis. the Tancítaro Cross-Banded Mountain Rattlesnake
Crotalus tancitarensis. The Tancítaro cross-banded mountain rattlesnake is a small species (maximum recorded total length = 434 mm) known only from the upper elevations (3,220–3,225 m) of Cerro Tancítaro, the highest mountain in Michoacán, Mexico, where it inhabits pine-fir forest (Alvarado and Campbell 2004; Alvarado et al. 2007). Cerro Tancítaro lies in the western portion of the Transverse Volcanic Axis, which extends across Mexico from Jalisco to central Veracruz near the 20°N latitude. Its entire range is located within Parque Nacional Pico de Tancítaro (Campbell 2007), an area under threat from manmade fires, logging, avocado culture, and cattle raising. This attractive rattlesnake was described in 2004 by the senior author and Jonathan A. Campbell, and placed in the Crotalus intermedius group of Mexican montane rattlesnakes by Bryson et al. (2011). We calculated its EVS as 19, which is near the upper end of the high vulnerability category (see text for explanation), its IUCN status has been reported as Data Deficient (Campbell 2007), and this species is not listed by SEMARNAT. More information on the natural history and distribution of this species is available, however, which affects its conservation status (especially its IUCN status; Alvarado-Díaz et al. 2007). Abstract Natural history of the critically endangered salamander Ambystoma leorae (Caudata: Ambystomatidae) from the Río Tonatzin, Mexico. In Mexico, many species of Ambystoma are endangered, but unfortunately little is known about their natural history and ecology. We report on aspects of the natural history of A. leorae, a critically endangered endemic salamander, from the Río Tonatzin, State of México, Mexico. We observed egg masses, which were attached to vegetation, from April to June, with a mean of 7.28 eggs per egg mass. Larval A. leorae were found in sections of the Río Tonatzin with muddy bottoms and submerged aquatic vegetation. -
