In 1980 en 1981 assisteerde ik Herbert von Karajan bij de Salzburger Festspiele. Als ik bij een repetitie achter de vleugel zat, in zijn ruime studio, kwam hij nogal eens achter mij staan en legde zijn handen op mijn schouders. Hij was een geniaal dirigent, maar niet erg voorkomend, en moeilijk benaderbaar. Dat gebaar was een teken van respect. Dat jasje is me allang te klein, maar ik stel me zo voor dat zijn handafdruk er nog in staat. Als assistent ben je vaak coach. Soms komt een beroemde dirigent pas langs als de hele productie is ingestudeerd. Als assistent ben je een hoge vorm van manusje van alles. Voordat het orkest erbij kwam, repeteerde ik met de zangers. Want zij moesten een over- eenstemmende interpretatie en zuiverheid hebben. Soms dirigeerde Von Karajan dat en liet zien waar de zangers in het stuk konden ademen, dan weer luisterde hij alleen maar. Van alle opera’s en koorwerken bestaan piano-uittreksels. Dat betekent dat de hele orkestpartij, alle blazers, violen en het slag- werk, zijn samengevat in de twee handen van de pianist.

    festivalweekend: reis door Europa klassiek Kamermuziek ligt ons na aan het hart. Maar kamermuziek gespeeld door bevriende, verwante zielen, dat staat nog een treetje hoger. Voor dat soort speciale projecten doen wij graag de deuren van de Aalmarktzaal open. Violist Dmitri Makhtin en pianist Andrei Korobeinikov: twee internationaal gewaardeerde solisten en uitnemende kamermusici. In maart 2016 pakten ze de Aalmarktzaal in met vier totaal verschillende stukken. 17/18 Dat smeekte om meer en ze beloofden ter plekke voor ons een compleet muzikaal weekend in elkaar te zetten. Alexei Ogrintchouk (eerste hoboïst van het Concertgebouworkest) was komen luisteren en sloot zich spontaan aan. Samen met hun vrienden cellist Kyril Zlotnikov (mede-oprichter van het Jerusalem Quartet) en het klarinetduo Daniel en Alexander Gurfinkel vormen ze een muzikaal dream team, dat u meeneemt naar Sint Petersburg, Boedapest, Wenen en Parijs; vier concerten in 26 uur, daar kan geen citytrip tegen op! Als altijd met knikkende knieën, maar stiekem trots, presenteer ik u het Passe-partout € 95 / € 30 per concert festivalweekend: late Beethovens klassieke-muziekseizoen 17/18. Ik ben zo benieuwd wat u ervan vindt. Aalmarktzaal door het Brodsky Quartet Blij ben ik met het weekend vol late Beethovenkwartetten door het Brodsky Quartet – wie anders?
