Four years later, a second line was added to serve downtown Springfield to north Springfield and the growing Gateway/ RiverBend region. In September 2017, a third line opened to serve west Eugene and provide easy and direct transit access between Beltline, downtown Eugene, the University of Oregon, downtown Springfield, RiverBend and Gateway areas. The newest line also integrated transfer stations in west Eugene for more direct cross-town travel options. The BRT system, known as the Emerald Express (EmX), uses a combination of dedicated transit-ways and transit-lanes, a synchronized signal system and customer amenities to provide fast and comfortable public transportation similar to light rail service, but for a fraction of the cost. The Eugene-Springfield metro area now has 24 round-trip miles of BRT service operating seven days a week, mitigating traffic congestion and supporting multi-modal travel through key corridors. Funding The EmX is the backbone of Lane Transit District’s nationally recognized public transportation system. EmX carries 2.5 million passengers annually getting people to jobs, school, appointments, medical care, shopping and recreation. Since the first twoEmX lines began operating (Franklin and Gateway lines), an estimated $250 million in private investment has occurred along those corridors.
