J.E.Afr.Nat.Hist.Soc. Vol.XXV No.2 (111) June 1965 OBSERVATIONS ON VERREAUX'S EAGLE OWL Bubo lacteus (Temminck) IN KENYA By L.H. Brown This paper brings together scattered observations made in various parts of Kenya between 1947 and 1964. Little seems to have been pub• lished on the behaviour and habits of this owl, so that these details on breeding habits and food may be of value. The majority of the observations were made at a breeding site in Karen, 13 miles from Nairobi, in August-September 1963, but some observations were also made in Embu district, and at scattered localities elsewhere in Kenya. Verreaux's Eagle Owl is quite a common bird in Kenya, though not often observed for long. It appears to be an inhabitant of forest edges near open country, and is specially fond of strips of riverine Acacia forest. In such localities its deep hoot proclaims its presence soon after dark, and often by day as well. Pairs of the species are nearly always to be found roosting close together, sometimes sitting on the same branch. When they start to hunt in the early hours of the night they move further apart, but keep in touch by calls, which make them easy to locate. The voice of one sex, probably the female, is deeper than that of the other. II Voice. The normal call is a very deep double hoot "oop-poop", almost as deep as the call of the Ground Hornbill Bucorvus leadbeateri (Vigors). It can be confused with the call of that species, particularly as both these birds are likely to roost in, and call from, riverine Acacia forest at dusk and dawn. -

Positive results were obtained with methyl parathion, dimethoate and phoxim, while a negative response was achieved with methyl azinfos. The highest con- centrations of all substances decreased the SCE. possibly due to their toxicity, produ- cing the death of the damaged cells and therefore eiiminating the SCE expression. RESUMEN Se evaluó el afecto citogenbtico de los insecticidas organofosforados metil paration o foiidol, dimetoato o rogor. foxim o bay 77488 y metil azinfos o gusation mediante el anáiisis de intercambio de cromátidas hermanas (ICH) en cultivo de linfocitos humanos. Se obtuvieron resultados positivos con metil paratión, dimetoato y foxim, en tanto que con metil azinfos la respuesta fue negativa. A las concentraciones más altas de todas las sustancias empleadas disminuyeron los ICH, debido posiblemente a su elevada to- xicidad, provocando la muerte de las células más dañadas e impidiendo de esta manera la expresión del ICH. Scopus 34: 1–23, January 2015 Systematic and taxonomic issues concerning some East African bird species, notably those where treatment varies between authors Donald A. Turner and David J. Pearson Summary The taxonomy of various East African bird species is discussed. Fourteen of the non- passerines and forty-eight of the passerines listed in Britton (1980) are considered, with reference to treatments by various subsequent authors. Twenty-three species splits are recommended from the treatment in Britton (op. cit.), and one lump, the inclusion of Jackson’s Hornbill Tockus jacksoni as a race of T. deckeni. Introduction With a revision of Britton (1980) now nearing completion, this is the first of two pa- pers highlighting the complexities that surround some East African bird species. All appear in Britton in one form or another, but since that landmark publication our knowledge of East African birds has increased considerably, and with the advances in DNA sequencing, our understanding of avian systematics and taxonomy is con- tinually moving forward. A tidal wave of phylogenetic studies in the last decade has revolutionized our understanding of the higher-level relationships of birds. Taxa pre- viously regarded as quite distantly related have been brought together in new clas- sifications and some major groups have been split asunder (Knox 2014). As a result we are seeing the familiar order of families and species in field guides and checklists plunged into turmoil. The speed at which molecular papers are being published continues at an unprec- edented rate. We must remember, however, that while many molecular results may indicate a relationship, they do not necessarily prove one. -

The overall objectives of the IPCS are to establish the scientific basis for assessment of the risk to human health and the environment from exposure to chemicals, through international peer review processes, as a prerequisite for the promotion of chemical safety, and to provide technical assistance in strengthening national capacities for the sound management of chemicals. This publication was developed in the IOMC context. The contents do not necessarily reflect the views or stated policies of individual IOMC Participating Organizations. The Inter-Organization Programme for the Sound Management of Chemicals (IOMC) was established in 1995 following recommendations made by the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development to strengthen cooperation and increase international coordination in the field of chemical safety. The Participating Organizations are: FAO, ILO, UNDP, UNEP, UNIDO, UNITAR, WHO, World Bank and OECD. The purpose of the IOMC is to promote coordination of the policies and activities pursued by the Participating Organizations, jointly or separately, to achieve the sound management of chemicals in relation to human health and the environment. White-tailed Lark. Thika, April. Mirafra hypermetra hypermetra (Reichenow) Red-winged Bush-lark. Angata Kasut; Merille; Thika. In the Kasut to the south-west of Marsabit Mountain this large lark was fairly common,haunting a patch of desert where there was some bush and even grass following rain. Runs well in quick spurts; but, pursued, usually takes wing. The flight is strong, although it seldom goes far before ducking down again, usually perching on tops of bushes. In the heat of the day seen sheltering under bush. Has a clear and loud, two• Il)ted call and a very pretty song of four or fivenotes. The cinnamon-rufous of its plum• age shows in flight but is invisible in the bird when at rest.
