“In Space No One Can Hear You Scream” Relive the Terror in Deep MEDIA ALERT – Sept. 26, 2019 “In Space No One Can Hear You Scream” Relive the Terror in Deep Space as 1979’s Sci-Fi Masterpiece Alien Marks its 40th Anniversary by Returning to Movie Theaters Nationwide for the TCM Big Screen Classics Series • WHAT: In the summer of 1979, moviegoers journeyed into deep space and met with unimaginable horror as they discovered director Ridley Scott’s science-fiction/horror masterpiece Alien. Working from a screenplay by Dan O’Bannon and a story by O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett, Scott created a film dripping in dread, one that upended audience expectations for a science-fiction film by combining a futuristic setting with extreme terror. Forty years later, Alien returns to more than 600 cinemas nationwide for three days only, with special commentary before and after the film from TCM Primetime Host Ben Mankiewicz. Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Harry Dean Stanton, Veronica Cartwright, John Hurt, Ian Holm and Yaphet Kotto are the crew members of the Nostromo, which veers off course to explore a mysterious signal emanating from an unknown planet. When they unwittingly take an alien creature aboard the ship, they have no idea just how terrifying – and deadly – the ordeal will be. Combining a remarkable visual style, including designs by H.R. Giger and Oscar®- winning visual effects, along with a disquieting score by Jerry Goldsmith, Alien has become a modern classic. • WHO: Fathom Events, Turner Classic Movies and Twentieth Century Fox • WHEN: Sunday, October 13, 2019 – 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. (local time) Tuesday, October 15, 2019 – 7:00 p.m. (local time) Wednesday, October 16, 2019 – 7:00 p.m. (local time) • WHERE: Tickets for Alien can be purchased at www.FathomEvents.com or participating theater box offices. Abstract Deriving from the Latin monere (to warn), monsters are at their very core warnings against the horrors that lurk in the shadows of our present and the mists of our future – in this case, the horrors of techno-capitalism (i.e., the conjunction of scientific modes of research and capitalist modes of production). This thesis reveals the ideological mechanisms that animate “techno-capitalist” monster narratives through close readings of 7 novels and 3 films from Canada and the United States in both English and French and released between 1979 and 2016. All texts are linked by shared themes, narrative tropes, and a North American origin.

It‘s the sort of story breathlessly reported in pulp novellas and pseudohistories, and more recently, of course, movies. Glass, born in Pennsylvania in 1780, found his place in legend as a member of a fur-trading expedition led by General William Henry Ashley, setting out in 1822 with a force of about a hundred men, including other figures that would become vital in pioneering annals, like Jim Bridger, Jedediah Smith, and John Fitzgerald.

  • Invasion of the Body Snatchers Kathleen Loock
6 The Return of the Pod People: Remaking Cultural Anxieties in Invasion of the Body Snatchers Kathleen Loock Don Siegel’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), based on a novel by Jack Finney, has become one of the most influential alien invasion films of all time. The film’s theme of alien paranoia—the fear that some invis- ible invaders could replace individual human beings and turn them into a collective of emotionless pod people—resonated with widespread anxieties in 1950s American culture. It has been read as an allegory of the communist threat during the Cold War but also as a commen- tary on McCarthyism, the alienating effects of capitalism, conformism, postwar radiation anxiety, the return of “brainwashed” soldiers from the Korean War, and masculine fears of “the potential social, politi- cal, and personal disenfranchisement of postwar America’s hegemonic white patriarchy” (Mann 49). 1 Engaging with the profound concerns of its time, Invasion of the Body Snatchers is widely regarded as a signature film of the 1950s. Yet despite its cultural and historical specificity, the narrative of alien-induced dehumanization has lent itself to reinterpretations and re-imaginations like few others, always shifting with the zeitgeist and replacing former cultural anxieties with more contemporary and urgent ones. Siegel’s film has inspired three cinematic remakes over the last 55 years: Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Abel Ferrara’s Body Snatchers (1993), and, most recently, Oliver Hirschbiegel’s The Invasion (2007). Bits and pieces of the film have also found their way into the American popular imagination, taking the form of intermedial refer- ences to Invasion of the Body Snatchers in movies, television series, car- toons, and video games.

DESERT - DAY All we can see, filling the entire frame is a flame-orange sky...almost like the sky from the burning of Atlanta in "Gone with the Wind". SUPERIMPOSE: Presenter credit. PAN DOWN lower and lower until we see the terrain below... the desert. There is no vegetation whatever, just sand and odd-shaped rock formations. The air is filled with red dust, which alternately obscures and then reveals the image. CAMERA MOVES FORWARD optically - enlarging the film grain in the process. SLOW DISOLVE OPENING CREDITS BEGIN. ANOTHER SHOT of a barren landscape, once more with bizarre rocks. Dust. Sound of wind. CAMERA MOVES FORWARD again. DISSOLVE. ANOTHER LANDSCAPE, but this time, in the distance are some enormous plastic domes. Sunlight striking them and reflect- ing causes brilliant rainbows. CAMERA optically tracks toward the dome, seen in tantalizingly indistinct fashion through the red dust. DISSOLVE... ANOTHER ANGLE, and, in the distance, on the horizon of the arid landscape is a huge SPHINX-LIKE STRUCTURE. (It is reminiscent of the Egyptian sphinx, but both body and face, though gargoyle-like, are different in design.) There are some large pyramids not far from the sphinx. CAMERA MOVES optically FORWARD. DISSOLVE. CAMERA is much closer to the sphinx and is directly in front. It moves (combination of zoom and optical printer move) towards the eyes, which appear to be red gems. As CAMERA APPROACHES one of the eyes, it appears to be stained red glass, as in a temple.
