Invasion of the Body Snatchers Kathleen Loock
6 The Return of the Pod People: Remaking Cultural Anxieties in Invasion of the Body Snatchers Kathleen Loock Don Siegel’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), based on a novel by Jack Finney, has become one of the most influential alien invasion films of all time. The film’s theme of alien paranoia—the fear that some invis- ible invaders could replace individual human beings and turn them into a collective of emotionless pod people—resonated with widespread anxieties in 1950s American culture. It has been read as an allegory of the communist threat during the Cold War but also as a commen- tary on McCarthyism, the alienating effects of capitalism, conformism, postwar radiation anxiety, the return of “brainwashed” soldiers from the Korean War, and masculine fears of “the potential social, politi- cal, and personal disenfranchisement of postwar America’s hegemonic white patriarchy” (Mann 49). 1 Engaging with the profound concerns of its time, Invasion of the Body Snatchers is widely regarded as a signature film of the 1950s. Yet despite its cultural and historical specificity, the narrative of alien-induced dehumanization has lent itself to reinterpretations and re-imaginations like few others, always shifting with the zeitgeist and replacing former cultural anxieties with more contemporary and urgent ones. Siegel’s film has inspired three cinematic remakes over the last 55 years: Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Abel Ferrara’s Body Snatchers (1993), and, most recently, Oliver Hirschbiegel’s The Invasion (2007). Bits and pieces of the film have also found their way into the American popular imagination, taking the form of intermedial refer- ences to Invasion of the Body Snatchers in movies, television series, car- toons, and video games. -
Going Down to South Park: Reporting the News on Television’S Most Politically and Socially Irreverent Animated Series
Going Down to South Park: Reporting the News on Television’s Most Politically and Socially Irreverent Animated Series By Todd Smilovitz Abstract The image of the journalist on South Park is not one to be proud of. Journalists appear on more than half of the episodes in the show’s first nine seasons, but they are mostly purveyors of news that is opinionated, baseless, soft, sentimental, naïve, late-breaking and/or sensationalistic. Behind all of this shallow reporting is a quest by news media for ratings: the profit motive distorts news. The fact that almost all South Park journalism is broadcast news, which naturally tends to focus on sound bites rather than in-depth analysis, only enhances this effect. Whether the image of the journalist on South Park is a reflection of the modern American media, or vice versa, is left unsettled and to the eye of the beholder. * * * “A Sexy Action News Team Special Report: ‘Cough Medicine Abuse in School’ with the Sexy Action School News Team. It’s the report you can’t afford to miss.”1 -- Announcer setting up the boys’ final attempt to grab high ratings for their elementary school news show While this Sexy Action News Team special report could actually be seen as investigative journalism, it only comes about after more sensationalistic methods for becoming the number Going Down to South Park By Todd Smilovitz 2 one South Park Elementary School news show fail. In other words, the serious, investigative content of the show is only incidental to the profit motive. Live, late-breaking special reports by eyewitness news teams are the real king of South Park journalism. -

South Park's Satan: Sympathetic
SOUTH PARK’S SATAN: SYMPATHETIC CHARACTER AND CRITICAL CULTURAL MIRROR by Joshua Casper A thesis proposal submitted to the faculty of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Religious Studies Charlotte 2020 Approved by: _________________________ Dr. Sean McCloud _________________________ Dr. Alexandra Kaloyanides _________________________ Dr. Eric Hoenes Del Pinal ii ©2020 Joshua Casper ALL RIGHTS RESERVED iii ABSTRACT JOSHUA CASPER. South Park Satan: Sympathetic Character and Critical Cultural Mirror. (Under the Direction of DR. SEAN MCCLOUD) In this thesis, I argue that Satan in South Park is portrayed as a sympathetic character who acts as both a role model of individuality and responsibility in a manner that supports what religious studies scholar David Feltmate refers to as the "unseen order" proffered by the show's creators. I will support this argument through three case studies that compares Satan to other prominent South Park characters: Jesus, Saddam Hussein, and Mr. Garrison. This thesis engages with several different fields of scholarly work, including religious studies, media studies, and popular culture studies. While this work is influenced by such scholarship, the main subject, South Park’s Satan, has not been the focus of any work on religion, media, and popular culture broadly, or scholarship on South Park specifically. In this manner, I hope to add to the existing literature on South Park and religion and popular culture studies. I will discuss Lisle Dalton, Eric Greene, Jane Iwamura, David Feltmate, and Scott Poole and show how they will help me set up the main arguments of my analysis. -

Using Film to Teach Psychology: a Resource of Film Study Guides
USING FILM TO TEACH PSYCHOLOGY: A RESOURCE OF FILM STUDY GUIDES Elizabeth M. Nelson, Christian Brothers University (2002 Instructional Resource Award Recipient) Overview This 106-page resource offers instructors tools for using films to enhance their instruction. Student evaluations consistently indicate that films help them learn the topics, provide an alternative to traditional lectures, and give them a different point of view. However, students also say they do not like to view films if they do not understand the relevancy of the film to the course material. This resource gives teachers of psychology additional tools for using film, such as tested study guides, sample syllabi, student papers, references, and Internet resources. The film study guides contained in this resource have been used in a variety of psychology classes, and may be applicable to a variety of other courses.
