These, however, may constitute important safe havens for saproxylic organisms since forest reserves are relatively numerous in Europe. Saproxylic beetles are among the key groups for the assessment of biodiversity in forest habitats and longhorn beetles may play an important role in bioindication as they are ecologically associated with various micro- habitats and considered a very heterogeneous family of insects. To study the role of forest reserves as important habitats for saproxylic beetles, we compared cerambycid assemblages in corresponding pairs of sites (nature reserves and managed stands) in a forest region under high anthropogenic pressure (Upper Silesia, Poland, Central Europe). -

83 Wingnut (Juglandaceae) as a new generic host for Pityophthorus juglandis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and the thousand cankers disease pathogen, Geosmithia morbida (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) Stacy M. Seybold1 Abstract—The walnut twig beetle (WTB), Pityophthorus juglandis Blackman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), vectors a fungus, Geosmithia morbida Kolařík, Freeland, Utley, and Tisserat (Ascomycota: Hypocreales), which colonises and kills the phloem of walnut and butternut trees, Juglans Linnaeus (Juglandaceae). Over the past two decades, this condition, known as thousand cankers disease (TCD), has led to the widespread mortality of Juglans species in the United States of America. Recently the beetle and pathogen were discovered on several Juglans species in northern Italy. Little is known about the extra-generic extent of host acceptability and suitability for the WTB. We report the occurrence of both the WTB and G. morbida in three species of wingnut, Pterocarya fraxinifolia Spach, Pterocarya rhoifolia Siebold and Zuccarini, and Pterocarya stenoptera de Candolle (Juglandaceae) growing in the United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service, National Clonal Germplasm Repository collection in northern California (NCGR) and in the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden in southern California, United States of America. In two instances (once in P. stenoptera and once in P. fraxinifolia) teneral (i.e., brood) adult WTB emerged and were collected more than four months after infested branch sections had been collected in the field. In Romania, the interest for biomass production from short rotation coppice (SRC) is at beginning, being focused on the culture of poplar and willow. The high productions of biomass, which can be obtained from these cultures, are affected by numerous diseases and harmful insects, with negative effects on viability and vitality of these cultures. In order to improve the actual clones (certified for culture in Romania) resistance to biotic and abiotic stress, a collection of different provenance Salix sp. potential genitors was established in March 2015 (Didactical and Experimental Station belonging to BUASVM Timişoara). The genitors collection includes 38 genotypes collected from the spontaneous flora belonging to 11 different species of Salix. Diseases of shoots and leaves caused by Marssonina salicicola, Pollaccia saliciperda, Uncinula salicis and Cercospora salicina were registered. A negative impact on young shoots vitality had leaf beetle Melasoma saliceti L., small poplar borer (Saperda populnea) as well as sucking pests like different species of Aphidae or mites. The most tolerant genotypes both to pests and diseases were belonging to S. rosmarinifolia and S. pentandra. -

The Effects of Fire on Surface-Dwelling Arthropod Communities in Pinus Brutia Forests of Southwestern Anatolia

Sci. & Tech. 6(2): 33-39, 2016 The Effects of Fire on Surface-Dwelling Arthropod Communities in Pinus brutia Forests of Southwestern Anatolia Burçin Yenisey KAYNAŞ1 ABSTRACT: This study aimed at exploring the response of surface-active arthropod communities to fire and fire-induced habitat alteration in a Pinus brutia Ten. forests in southwestern Turkey. Samplings were carried on in twelve study sites by using 36 pitfall traps in burned and unburned sites during two months immediately after fire occurred in August 2004. According to results obtained in two sampling terms, the abundances of all arthropods, insects and ants were higher on the burned site than on the unburned site. The other community parameters such as species richness, diversity and evenness were found higher in the burned site for insects and ants. Diptera that was represented mostly by one species, the syrphid flyEumerus strigatus (Fallen, 1817) was caught in great abundance in the burned site. Colonizing of Orthotomicus erosus (Wollaston, 1857) at burned site in two months after fire increased abundance of bark beetles in the burned site rapidly. Entomologists of Saskatchewan Second Edition
ENTOMOLOGISTS OF SASKATCHEWAN SECOND EDITION Meghan Vankosky, Martin Erlandson, and Cedric Gillott, editors 2019 Foreword and Acknowledgements In 2017, Owen Olfert gave me a copy of Entomologists of Saskatchewan. Being new to the entomology community in Saskatchewan at the time, I read it with interest and especially enjoyed seeing pictures of my new colleagues from almost 30 years earlier. Paul W. Riegert did an amazing job capturing the history of entomological expertise in Saskatchewan in the 1990 edition of Entomologists of Saskatchewan. Seeing value in historical records and knowledge, I suggested that the book be updated at the December 2017 meeting of the Entomological Society of Saskatchewan (ESS). I also ended up inadvertently volunteering myself for the task, with the generous assistance of Martin Erlandson and Cedric Gillott. The process of updating a nearly 30 year-old document of this nature was challenging. Entomologists have retired and moved away from Saskatchewan, and in one case, retired and moved TO Saskatchewan. Entomologists included in the 1990 edition have sadly passed away or have slipped out of touch. Although there has been a loss of entomological expertise in Saskatchewan, there has also been renewal in the form of newly graduated students, newly identified professionals and amateurs, and in the immigration of new professional entomologists. Renewal of this nature is indicative of the ongoing importance of entomological knowledge, basic and applied. Some of the new entomologists are studying bee taxonomy and biology at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, aquatic entomology at the Water Security Agency, and agricultural entomology at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
