Preface This is a reproduction of the original 1983 publication, issued now in the interests of historical research. We have resisted the temptations of hindsight to change, or comment on, the text other than to correct spelling errors. The document therefore represents the period in which it was created, as well as the hard work of former colleagues of the BFI. Researchers will notice that the continuing debate about the definitions as to what constitutes a “British” production was topical, even then, and that criteria being considered in 1983 are still valid. Also note that the Dept of Trade registration scheme ceased in May 1985 and that the Eady Levy was abolished in the same year. Finally, please note that we have included reminders in one or two places to indicate where information could be misleading if taken for current. These were the questions which had to be addressed in compiling British Films 1971 – 1981. The publication includes commercial features either made and/or released in Britain between 1971 and 1981 and lists them alphabetically and by year of registration (where appropriate). Information given for each film includes production company, studio and/or major location, running time, director and references to trade paper production charts and Monthly Film Bulletin reviews as source of more detailed information. -

Already published are books on such authors as Alan Bennett, Trevor Griffiths, Tony Garnett, Andrew Davies, Alan Clarke, Troy Kennedy Martin and Lynda La Plante. In reviewing a number of earlier titles in the series, Robin Nelson has noted: Following a period in which the death of the author has been much vaunted, this new series tackles head-on the issue of authorial contribution ... This refreshing, overall approach allows due credit to be given to exceptional, creative individuals while fully recognizing that broadcast television production is a complex and collaborative industrial process over which no one individual can have total control ... The Television Series mobilizes a dialogue between different perspectives and critical approaches. In boldly celebrating the achievements of individuals, the accounts of careers also illustrate the collaborative process of television production and the powerplays and tensions involved in trying to articulate a distinctive vision. (Nelson 2007) Because of nature of television production, there is a complex dialectic and often tension of individual vision and creativity with other forces involved. This book captures that dynamic well. Both the series and this book make a useful contribution to television studies by focusing on the role played by certain key authors within the larger dynamics of television production. Jack Rosenthal (1931-2004) hailed from working class Manchester, descended from Russian Jewish immigrants who endured poverty and hard times. -

Signed: Philippa Zielfa Maslin Date: 19th January 2018 3 Abstract Locating itself in relation to existing work on youth in, primarily American, cinema, the thesis questions the analytical usefulness of conceptualising the ‘youth/teen film’ as a genre and, instead, seeks to establish the value of analysing the ‘coming-of-age film’ as a genre involving the employment of adolescent protagonists. In setting out to do so, it focuses on films which are set in Britain, made from 1979 onwards, and rarely discussed as coming-of-age films (or, indeed, youth/teen films), but which may be seen to benefit from such a critical approach. Following a survey of a range of anthropological, biological, historical, juridical, psychoanalytic, psychological and sociological approaches to adolescence, as well as scholarship on the literary precursor of the coming-of-age film, the Bildungsroman, and on the relationship between adolescence and cinema, a working definition of the coming-of- age genre is proposed.
