Greenfield Student Competition Exceptional Young Musicians in Greater Philadelphia Region Win Solo Opportunities to perform with The Philadelphia Orchestra (Philadelphia , April 18, 2013)–Three young artists have won the 2013 Philadelphia Orchestra Albert M. Greenfield Student Competition and will appear with the Orchestra as soloists over the next year. Thirteen students performed during the final round of competition on March 26 before an audience in Perelman Theater at The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. The winners of the 2013 Greenfield Competition are Audrey Emata (flute, from Wallingford, PA) in the Children’s Division, Zeyu Victor Li (violin, from Philadelphia, PA) in the Junior Division, and Won Suk Lee (percussion, performing on marimba, from Philadelphia, PA) in the Senior Division. All winners receive monetary awards in addition to their solo engagements with the Orchestra. New this year, five young musicians received honorable mentions: April Lee (cello) in the Children’s Division, Sein An (violin) and Hyun Jae Lim (violin) in the Junior Division, and Lauren Frey (soprano) and Jeonghyoun Lee (cello) in the Senior Division. During the Competition finals, the winners performed such works as Franz Doppler’s Fantaisie pastorale hongroise, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, and Keiko Abe’s Prism Rhapsody for marimba and orchestra. “It is always so inspiring to witness the passion and talent these students possess, and gratifying to have a way to reward them for their dedication and determination,” said Philadelphia Orchestra President and CEO Allison Vulgamore.

    Obituary Eugene Istomin US pianist at the centre of a celebrated trio Jessica Duchen Wednesday October 15, 2003 The Guardian The pianist Eugene Istomin, who has died of liver cancer aged 77, was among the most respected American musicians of his generation. Especially renowned in his celebrated piano trio with Isaac Stern and Leonard Rose, he was admired for his rich and singing tone quality, and for the seriousness with which he always placed his virtuosity at the service of the composer. As well as the Viennese classics and the music of Chopin, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov, he occasionally championed contemporary music by Ned Rorem, Roger Sessions and Henri Dutilleux, who all composed pieces for him. "Eugene was not a specialist in contemporary music," Rorem said last month, "but he played it better than most of the people who were." Both Istomin's parents were professional singers, Russian immigrants to New York, where Eugene was born; he made his concert debut at the age of six, accompanying his mother. The Russian pianist and teacher Alexander Siloti, a cousin of Rachmaninov and pupil of Liszt, recognised his talent and oversaw his early training, under the guidance of his daughter Kyriena. He also sent him to play to Rachmaninov, but advised against letting him perform as a child prodigy. In 1939, aged 13, Istomin entered the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia as a student of Rudolf Serkin, whose Germanic influence provided an intriguing counterpoint to the earlier Russian training. Another teacher was the Polish pianist Mieczylaw Horszowski, a prime exponent of the pure musicality that became one of Istomin's hallmarks.
