For 75 years, members of the intergalactic police force known as the Green Lanterns have been taking readers and science fiction fans from one end of the galaxy to the other. A very good choice of stories, maybe except for any Guy Gardner ones, but I'm biased for Guy and he was the only Lantern I knew beforehand. I love reprints like this, and I still think they're valuable for the uninitiated. Alan Scott's old tales are insanely boring, Sinestro used to not have a ring and was lame because of it. His first comics assignments led to a critically acclaimed five-year run on the The Flash. Matthew rated it it was ok Jun 19, Product Details About the Author. Jul 11, Sarah rated it really liked it. They got to a point where they understand each other, won't ever agree about the means, but agree to the same ends, and each makes a personal sacrifice to try and reach those ends. Volthoom had apparently unlocked the power of the Emotional spectrum as he came with a power battery of his own later revealed to be the "Travel Lantern" and taught what he knew about the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum energy to the Guardians of the Universe. I picked up the issue, saw the names of two guys on the cover I knew largely nothing about Johns and artist Ethan Van Sciver and made the purchase on a nostalgic whim.     1 Black Super Power: AnAnalysis of DC Comics' First African-American Superhero Douglas Dame © Douglas Dame 2 Abstract: Like all superheroes, the first Black Green Lantern (John Stewart) is endowed with unique powers, yet the very idea of power is complicated by the racial discourse that exists inside and outside his comic book series. Thus, power in his origin story is associated at times with a stereotypically fetishized black male physical power, while at other times it takes on a more socially critical dimension, indicating concerns with the superhero's power of self-definition and his power within the existing social structure. These themes, often found in African-American literature, are also woven into the conventions of superhero comics, resulting in a complicated moment of interaction between two generally distinct narrative traditions. First there was Superman. Famously fighting for truth, justice, and the American way, the Man of Steel heralded the first age, the Golden Age, of the superhero comic with his appearance in the first issues of Action Comics in 1938 (Wolk 719). The boy from Krypton introduced to American popular culture a new form of mythology, where god-like beings lived among the common man and woman, serving as defenders of justice, endowed with powers befit for their righteous defense of the country and the world. They were orphaned millionaires who used their riches and wits to protect the helpless. They were unexceptional high school students who learned that with great power comes great responsibility. Some of them were mutants fighting for acceptance, others came from exotic nations, or even planets, to stand up against villains that would threaten justice.
