  • WHAT I LEARNED at the MOVIES ABOUT LEGAL ETHICS and PROFESSIONALISM by Anita Modak-Truran
WHAT I LEARNED AT THE MOVIES ABOUT LEGAL ETHICS AND PROFESSIONALISM By Anita Modak-Truran HOW I GOT HERE I’ve been fortunate. I practice law. I make movies. I write about both. I took up my pen and started writing a film column for The Clarion-Ledger, a Gannett-owned newspaper, back in the late 90s, when I moved from Chicago, Illinois, to Jackson, Mississippi. (It was like a Johnny Cash song… “Yeah, I’m going to Jackson. Look out Jackson Town….”) I then turned my pen to writing for The Jackson Free Press, an indie weekly newspaper, which provided me opportunities to write about indie films and interesting people. I threw down the pen, as well as stopped my public radio movie reviews and the television segment I had for an ABC affiliate, when I moved three years ago from Jackson to Nashville to head Butler Snow’s Entertainment and Media Industry Group. During my journey weaving law and film together in a non-linear direction with no particular destination, I lived in the state where a young lawyer in the 1980s worked 60 to 70 hours a week at a small town law practice, squeezing in time before going to the office and during courtroom recesses to work on his first novel. John Grisham writes that he would not have written his first book if he had not been a lawyer. “I never dreamed of being a writer. I wrote only after witnessing a trial.” See http://www.jgrisham.com/bio/ (last accessed January 24, 2016). My law partners at Butler Snow have stories about the old days when Mr.

  • GSC Films: S-Z
GSC Films: S-Z Saboteur 1942 Alfred Hitchcock 3.0 Robert Cummings, Patricia Lane as not so charismatic love interest, Otto Kruger as rather dull villain (although something of prefigure of James Mason’s very suave villain in ‘NNW’), Norman Lloyd who makes impression as rather melancholy saboteur, especially when he is hanging by his sleeve in Statue of Liberty sequence. One of lesser Hitchcock products, done on loan out from Selznick for Universal. Suffers from lackluster cast (Cummings does not have acting weight to make us care for his character or to make us believe that he is going to all that trouble to find the real saboteur), and an often inconsistent story line that provides opportunity for interesting set pieces – the circus freaks, the high society fund-raising dance; and of course the final famous Statue of Liberty sequence (vertigo impression with the two characters perched high on the finger of the statue, the suspense generated by the slow tearing of the sleeve seam, and the scary fall when the sleeve tears off – Lloyd rotating slowly and screaming as he recedes from Cummings’ view). Many scenes are obviously done on the cheap – anything with the trucks, the home of Kruger, riding a taxi through New York. Some of the scenes are very flat – the kindly blind hermit (riff on the hermit in ‘Frankenstein?’), Kruger’s affection for his grandchild around the swimming pool in his Highway 395 ranch home, the meeting with the bad guys in the Soda City scene next to Hoover Dam. The encounter with the circus freaks (Siamese twins who don’t get along, the bearded lady whose beard is in curlers, the militaristic midget who wants to turn the couple in, etc.) is amusing and piquant (perhaps the scene was written by Dorothy Parker?), but it doesn’t seem to relate to anything.

  • Swinburne University of Technology Jason Bainbridge Lawyer As Critic
Bainbridge Lawyer as critic Swinburne University of Technology Jason Bainbridge Lawyer as critic: analysing the legal thriller through the works of John Grisham, Erle Stanley Gardner and Harper Lee Abstract: Focusing on selected ‘classic’ novels by John Grisham, with reference to how they are informed by the earlier works of Erle Stanley Gardner and Harper Lee, this paper explores how these authors, writing in the legal thriller genre, present their lawyer protagonists as critics of both the law and the legal systems of which they are a part. Both Gardner’s and Grisham’s writings have been the focus of much criticism from legal scholars who suggest they are unduly critical of lawyers and provide outlandishly happy endings. This article challenges these criticisms by analysing how Gardner’s and Grisham’s narratives explore notions of law’s contingency on crime and materiality. In this way the article concludes that these narratives offer a way of understanding how just practitioners can operate in an unjust system and therefore constitute a powerful interrogation of how law operates. Biographical note: Jason Bainbridge is Professor and Chair of Media and Communication at Swinburne University of Technology. He has published widely on popular cultural representations of law and justice in print, on film and on television, media convergence, merchandising and material culture. He is co-author of the textbook Media and Journalism: New Approaches to Theory Practice (3rd ed, OUP, 2015) and is currently working on a monograph around media franchises. Keywords: Creative writing – Crime fiction – Legal Thriller – Postmaterial Law – Popular Culture TEXT Special Issue 37: Crime fiction and the creative/critical nexus 1 eds Rachel Franks, Jesper Gulddal and Alistair Rolls, October 2016 Bainbridge Lawyer as critic Introduction The lawyer has always occupied an unusual position in crime fiction, simultaneously a figure of reverence and revulsion.

  • Philip Mclaren and the Indigenous-Australian Crime Novel
Coolabah, No.20, 2016, ISSN 1988-5946, Observatori: Centre d’Estudis Australians / Australian Studies Centre, Universitat de Barcelona Philip McLaren and the Indigenous-Australian Crime Novel Cornelis Martin Renes University of Barcelona [email protected] Copyright©2016 Cornelis Martin Renes. This text may be archived and redistributed both in electronic form and in hard copy, provided that the author and journal are properly cited and no fee is charged. Abstract: This paper locates the postcolonial crime novel as a space for disenfranchised groups to write back to the marginalisation inherent in the process of colonisation, and explores the example of Australia. From its inception in the mid-19th century, Australian crime fiction reflected upon the challenging harshness and otherness of the Australian experience for the free and convict settler, expelled from the metropole. It created a series of popular subgenres derived from the convict narrative proper, while more ‘standard’ modes of crime fiction, popularised in and through British and American crime fiction, were late to develop. Whereas Australian crime fiction has given expression to the white experience of the continent in manifold ways, up until recently it made no room for Indigenous voices – with the exception of the classic Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte series written by the prolific Arthur Upfield in the first half of the 20th century. For the longest time, this absence reflected the dispossession, dispersal and disenfranchisement of the colonised Indigenous peoples at large; there were neither Aboriginal voices nor Aboriginal authors, which made the textual space of the Australian crime novel a discursive terra nullius. This paper will look at the only Indigenous-Australian author to date with a substantial body of work in crime fiction, Philip McLaren, and elucidate how his four crime novels break new ground in Australian crime fiction by embedding themselves within a political framework of Aboriginal resilience and resistance to neo/colonialism.

Neal is a prominent neurosurgeon who’s spent his career drilling through skulls and making repairs to brains.
