Peter Browne returns to his homeland for a slow safari along its backroads by Peter Browne – 25th January 2020 My friend Peter Browne very sadly died recently. Any of you who have read the Conde Nast Traveller would have come across Peter’s articles. He was the senior editor of CNT in London, but his articles were placed in the US editions too. Peter wrote beautifully; evocatively, accurately, passionately. He wrote several articles for my company on trips that we had sent him on to Botswana, Zambia, Chile. His writing transported you as he captured the essence of each moment that you shared vicariously. Peter loved Africa and was raised in Zimbabwe. This was the last safari he undertook to Africa, written last year. I wanted to share this article for two reasons: Firstly, for his poetic descriptions, but secondly, for the journey itself. It was the most fabulous trip imaginable, encompassing all that is wonderful about this rich, bio-diverse, culturally and wildlife rich country. At peak flow of the Zambezi river nearly 550 million litres of water flow into the gorge. Due to the force of the water, the spray is pushed up into the sky reaching heights of over 400m which can be viewed from a distance of 50km away and can be felt throughout the town. Lakes Tokwe-Mukosi and Mutirikwi, Hwange and Gonarezhou national parks, Nyangani, Vumba and Chimanimani mountains, Great Zimbabwe Monuments and some cities are other attractions. This paper examines tourist attractions, facilities, arrivals, occupancy, challenges and opportunities in the country. It provides a comprehensive database of information about local tourist destinations, attractions and facilities in Zimbabwe. Since there is little information on the subject of Zimbabwe’s tourism destinations, this paper seeks to fill that gap. It is composed of a wide variety of geological suites but is unified in representing the edge of the African plateau and the passive Gondwanan continental margin. The Great Escarpment falls into all major climatic zones on the subcontinent, is a repository of palaeo- and neo-endemics, hosts more than half of southern Africa’s centres of plant endemism, and has a rich suite of endemic fauna. In addition, the Great Escarpment is believed to be both a refugium and corridor for biological diversity. Despite the biological richness of the Great Escarpment, research to date has been fragmented and many sections of the Great Escarpment have not been studied.
