When Lumberjack Head Coach Colby Carthel was introduced to a raucous crowd at SFA in December 2018, he made a proclama- tion that any kid with a pine tree in their yard was going to be a Lumberjack. To that end, the Lumberjacks’ 20th head coach has made a conscious effort to win the recruiting landscape in SFA’s backyard, the Piney Woods of East Texas.

The Friona, Texas native has made an immediate splash in the FCS recruiting world, as the Lumberjacks have compiled a Top-5 recruiting class in the FCS in each of the past two seasons, and nabbed the top FCS commit in each of those seasons. Now 2015the carthelTEAM STATISTICS file Carthel enters his second year at the helm of the Lumberjack Hometown: Friona, Texas football program in 2020, looking to build on the progress made High School: Friona in his first season in Texas’ oldest town.
