Tiny beads of sweat slowly trickled down my face. My eyes patrolled the terrace, shifting from side-to-side revealing my obvious nervousness and confusion. Fatigue had set in and started to corrupt my muscles. Despite my rapid heartbeat, I could feel my body becoming increasingly sluggish and sore. With so much work yet ahead of me, the stress had already accumulated and I feared an eruption of uncontrollable, instinctual emotions was inevitable. What had I gotten myself into? There are few moments in my life as painfully memorable as those from my first day of work this past summer. At the ripe age of 17 with the entire summer ahead of me, a new sense of maturity shaped my thoughts and emotions. Using this new found energy, I decided to apply for a bus boy position at The Quail Inn, a world famous 5 diamond resort. I can still recall the anxiety I felt walking into the Human Resources Office at the Inn. Wearing my savory navy blue jacket, a snow white Calvin Klein dress shirt, my favorite light blue and black Kenneth Cole tie, and lightly pinstriped Brooks Brothers navy blue slacks, I sat nervously waiting for my scheduled interview. Although the questions I answered were simple and straightforward, I still found the interview slightly nerve-racking and was uncertain about the outcome. Apparently taken with my style of dress and intelligence, the manager invited me to start work the following week. Few words can describe the sense of satisfaction and fulfillment I felt having been solely responsible for this achievement. Unlike my previous "employment" which had been aided or influenced by my parents, this bus boy position was all my own. On the appointed day, a week later, dressed in an orange dress shirt the color of potato bisque, a white maid's apron and black slacks, I arrived at the restaurant. Juggling multiple platters and instructions from the hostess, waiters, and cooks, I still remember my first encounter with a guest which involved much mumbling, stuttering and the butchering of the pronunciation of Creme Brulee. Then carrying a metal pan of bread, freshly removed from a 400-degree oven, I clumsily slipped on a wet spot in the kitchen flinging hot bread bombs of sourdough rolls in every direction possible. With a loud crash from the metal pan, I futilely tried to avoid contact with what felt like a thousand eyes on me as I sat there embarrassed having just fallen. The most unfortunate part of this incident involved the contact between this pan and the skin of my neck, effectively producing a second-degree burn, branding me forever as property of the Quail Inn. As might be expected, things did go better as the summer progressed, and I became more experienced in the ways of clearing tables and pronouncing French desserts. I never burned myself with a bread pan again, although I did miss a stair and spill an assortment of half empty wine glasses and beer bottles on my shirt. Looking back on that first day now, I laugh but that doesn't minimize its importance. Life in my little town is pretty sheltered and like most, my parents are naturally protective. So although nerve wracking, unpleasant and a bit dangerous, that was my own first hand experience with the real world; and I learned a lot about how to talk to customers, how to interact with co-workers, and how not to carry bread pans. Most importantly, the events of that first day taught me how to learn from my mistakes. In writing this thesis, I hope that I have, in some way, managed to explain the reasons for this cultural diversity. This thesis would not have been written without the assistance of my two supervisors, Professor Mike Cronin and Professor Matthew Taylor. Professor Cronin’s assistance and knowledge has transformed the way I think about history, society and sport while Professor Taylor’s expertise has also made me look at the writing of sports history and the development of society in a different way.

Daniel Sidhom’s development of Mrs Wilberforce was brilliant as he formed a very vivid image of a sweet old widower. His use of a high-pitched voice and overdramatic tendencies added to the innocent adaptation of this character. Additionally, Gabe Rogers did not fail to breathe life into the role Professor Marcus, as his characterisation was totally engaging.

  • The History of Gaelic Football and the Gaelic Athletic Association Jaime Orejan, Phd, Elon University
The History of Gaelic Football and the Gaelic Athletic Association Jaime Orejan, PhD, Elon University INTRODUCTION Towards the end of the nineteenth century some people feared that the Irish games could face extinction. There was concern that the English games would take over Ireland and the native games would fade away. The establishment of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) in 1884 was the defining moment in the history of Ireland’s native games. Today the GAA regulates four distinctive games. The most popular are Gaelic football and hurling; the others are camogie and handball. Camogie is a field game played by women while handball is like squash without the rackets. The state of health of the GAA and the level of support for the games is a stunning endorsement of the vision of its founders, and the games are enjoyed by millions of people – players and spectators – every year (Healy, 1998). The Gaelic games of football, hurling, camogie, and handball are far removed from the glittering ranks of global sport. In fact, large figure endorsement deals and international stardom do not entice Gaelic players. In a world focused on millionaire sports professionals, these Gaelic games provide a remarkable example of thriving amateur sports. Amateur in their character, Gaelic games exist through the bonds of identity they forge among participants and devotees. Founded out of national pride, sustained through the lean times with that same emotion, few things run so deeply through the core of Irish society than the connection with place and home which the games provide. In a sporting world where players change allegiances for the price of a shoe and satellite television holds fans to ransom, there remains in Gaelic games vital proof of a purer ideal - amateurism, and love of the game (Prior, 1997).

The descriptive analytical design was used to accomplish the study. The study was conducted in late 2008 on a random sample of 257 students of GSSs of district Mianwali in Pakistan. Data were collected through administrating a questionnaire. Students’ opinions were sought on four compatible indicators of their effectual development through sports activities. Results revealed that sports activities help students to learn various social norms, improve reminiscence skills, respect towards others, self-discipline, and invigorating effects on their mind. Sports activities hardly encourage students to utilize their mental potential and control their antagonistic moods. The effect of sports
