Towards simultaneous analysis of molecular and morphological data in Hymenoptera. Ð Zoologica Scripta 28, 251±260. Principles and methods of simultaneous analysis in cladistics are reviewed, and the first, preliminary, analysis of combined molecular and morphological data on higher level relationships in Hymenoptera is presented to exemplify these principles. The morphological data from Ronquist et al. (in press) matrix, derived from the character diagnoses of the phylogenetic tree of Rasnitsyn (1988), are combined with new molecular data for representatives of 10 superfamilies of Hymenoptera by means of optimization alignment. The resulting cladogram supports Apocrita and Aculeata as groups, and the superfamly Chrysidoidea, but not Chalcidoidea, Evanioidea, Vespoidea and Apoidea. James M. Authors give several new sites of both species. For L. dorsigera the north-eastern limit of distribution in Europe moved more north. Studies on a collection of aculeate Hymenoptera from Nayachar Island, West Bengal P. Girish Kumar1 and Gaurav Sharma2 Aculeata is a subgroup of the order Hymenoptera whose significant peculiarity is the transformation of the female ovipositor into a venom-injecting device or stinger and the members of which are commonly called as ants, bees and wasps. They play an important role in the terrestrial ecosystems as pollinators, predators and producers. India has a rich fauna of Aculeata and Bingham (1897, 1903) was the first to publish a consolidated account of aculeate Hymenoptera (Wasps & Bees and Ants & Cuckoo wasps) of the region, including Burma and Ceylon. Batra (1977), Das Image 1. Vespa affinis (Linnaeus)♀ & Gupta (1989) and Gupta & Jonathan (2003) were also made comprehensive studies on Indian species of Apidae, Vespidae and Scoliidae respectively. The present account is based on a collection of Hymenoptera (Aculeata) obtained from Nayachar Island of West Bengal which includes the report of 8 species under 7 genera belonging to the families Vespidae (5 species), Scoliidae (2 species) and Apidae (1 species). Nayachar is an island located at the confluence of the Hooghly River and the Haldi River at the northern extent of the Bay of Image 2. Polistes (G.) olivaceus (De Geer)♀ Bengal in the East Midnapore district of West Bengal state of India. It is a small island with an area of 64 square kilometers located at 22°02' N 88°04' E coordinates and is believed to have accreted from alluvial derived sediment over the past 100 years. Material and Methods The specimens were collected from various localities of Nayachar Island during the period 1994-2000 by using sweep net specially made for the purpose. -

Mitteilungen des naturwissenschaftlichen Vereines für Steiermark Bd. 138 S. 5–8 Graz 2008 Scolia hirta (Hymenoptera-Scoliidae) neu für die Steiermark Von Herwig Teppner1 Mit 2 Abbildungen Angenommen am 15. 9. 2008 Summary: Scolia hirta (Hymenoptera-Scoliidae) new for Styria. – Scolia hirta (Schrank, 1781) was recorded for the first time in Styria (Austria). Adults were observed to be visiting in a garden in Graz, the heads of Echinops bannaticus (Asteraceae) in July and August and from circa mid August the inflorescences of Pycnanthemum pilosum (Labiatae). The larvae of Cetonia aurata (Rose-chafer) are most probably the host for the Scolia-larvae. Zusammenfassung: Scolia hirta (Schrank, 1781) wird erstmals für die Steiermark (Österreich) nach- gewiesen. Imagines besuchen in einem Garten in Graz im Juli und August die Körbchen von Echinops bannaticus (Asteraceae), ab ca. Mitte August die Blütenstände von Pycnanthemum pilosum (Lamiaceae). Als Wirt für die Larven kommen am ehesten die Larven von Cetonia aurata (Rosenkäfer) in Frage. 1. Einleitung Im Spätsommer 2007 beobachtete ich an warmen, sonnigen Nachmittagen mehrfach einzelne Exemplare von Scolia hirta (Borstige Dolchwespe), die sich an Blüten des ameri- kanischen Lippenblütlers Pycnanthemum pilosum („Bergminze“) aufhielten. Es fehlte die Zeit, dem näher nachzugehen, was nun 2008 nachgeholt werden konnte. 2. Ergebnisse Ort der Beobachtungen war ein Garten in Graz, Bezirk Gries, in einer Siedlung von Ein- und Mehrfamilienhäusern mit Gärten um jedes Haus. Scolia hirta (Schrank, 1781) fliegt hier im Juli und August. Zur Blütezeit von Echinops bannaticus (Asteraceae-Cardu- eae; Garten-Kugeldistel), die bis etwa Mitte August dauert, wurde Scolia ausschließlich an diesem beobachtet (Abb. 1). Meist umrunden Männchen und Weibchen die Körbchen der Kugeldistel mehrfach und stecken den Kopf in eine Blüte nach der anderen. -

The largest ones come from the Apidae fam. -

Munis Entomology & Zoology, 5 (2): 792-795] ABSTRACT: The present paper mentions 9 species and subspecies belonging to 4 genera of the family Scoliidae (Insecta: Hymenoptera). They were collected from different parts of Fars province in the south of Iran. Of these, Dasyscolia ciliata ciliata (Fabricius, 1787) is new to the fauna of Iran and Near East. Additionally 4 species were recorded for the first time from Fars province. Synonyms and distributional data for each species are included. KEY WORDS: Distribution, Fars, Fauna, Hymenoptera, Iran, Scoliidae. The family Scoliidae belongs to the superfamily Vespoidea and contains approximately about 560 valid species, 220 subspecies distributed among 43 valid genera, 28 subgenera and 2 subfamilies (Osten, 2005b). They are solitary insect; both male and female are winged. They tend to be black, often marked with yellow or orange, and their wing tips are distinctively corrugated. The larvae are ectoparasitoids of the grubs of Scarabaeidae (Esmaili & Rastegar, 1954; Osten, 2000; Osten et al., 2003). The faunistic and taxonomic papers treated the family in Iran have been conducted by Tkalcu (1987), Esmaili & Rastegar (1954), Chahartaghi Abineh (2002). The Scoliid fauna of West Palaearctic was monographed by Osten (2000), who also provided geographic distribution and keys, for all taxa. -

Only 13 species have been recorded from Europe and only two – S. hirta and S. sexmaculata from Poland. The paper presents faunistic data for both species from Opole province (South Poland), as well as information about their biology, ecology and general distribution. Colour photographs of the adults in nature are also provided. This subspecies has also recently been collected for the first time in Vanuatu during the 2006 Expédition Santo. The biology of this subspecies, its distribution in the Pacific and its potential as beneficial insect in French Polynesia and Vanuatu are briefly discussed. Résumé. – Les Aculéates de Polynésie française. II. Premier signalement de Micromeriella marginella modesta et nouvelle donnée du Vanuatu (Hymenoptera, Scoliidae, Campsomerini). Micromeriella marginella modesta (Smith, 1855) est signalée pour la première fois des îles de Tahiti et de Huahine (îles de la Société), ce qui représente également la première citation de Scoliidae pour la Polynésie française. Cette sous-espèce a aussi été récoltée pour la première fois au Vanuatu lors de l’expédition Santo 2006. La biologie de cette sous-espèce, sa distribution dans le Pacifique et le rôle d’auxiliaire potentiel qu’elle peut jouer en Polynésie française et au Vanuatu sont brièvement présentés.
