  • Literature Review in India: - a Case Study of Gujjar and Bakerwals
Mukt Shabd Journal ISSN NO : 2347-3150 Literature Review in India: - A Case Study of Gujjar and Bakerwals Dr. Raja Shahid Mughal Abstract Gujjars and Bakerwals are two names of one tribe popularly known as Gujjars in Indian sub- continent. Gujjars form an important ethnic and linguistic group. A country like India is a place to a variety of population with their separate culture, traditions and living styles. India is a home to almost more than half of the world’s tribal population. Gujrat, the state of India, was once called as Gujjar- Rashtra, which indicate the meaning Kingdom of Gujjar’s. From this area Gujjar’s established their kingdom and spread over other parts of the country. In this paper I describe the almost whole review about the literature of Gujjar and Bakerwals . Keyword:- Culture, Nomadic Life, Tribals, Gujari (Gojri), Gujjar Bakarwal tribals. Introduction Various studies have been conducted to discuss and analyze the different dimensions of the tribal life in India. Therefore, available relevant studies have been critically reviewed. Hudson (1922) in his book entitled “The Primitive Culture of India” traced the complex historical evaluation of various tribes of India and Hulton (1941) examined their socio- cultural condition. Ghurye (1943) argued that the tribals were backward caste Hindus. He at that time also held that they should be given equal status like the other Hindus. Majumdar (1944) following Ghurye‟s argument suggested that the cultural identity of tribals should be secured for which he stressed that there should be 'selected integration' of the tribals. Explaining it in detail he further held that only those people should be permitted to enter in this community who have relevance with tribal life.

  • Pastoral Predicaments: the Gujars in History
Pastoral Predicaments: The Gujars in History ! Shail Mayaram ! revised version of paper published in Peasants and Pastoralists in the Marketplace: perspectives from Africa and Asia, edited by Mahmood Mamdani. !Monika Horstmann. Kampala: Makrere Institute of Social Research, 2015. Pastoralism is one of the aporias that capitalist modernity in India has been unable to completely domesticate.1 In this sense, it shares aspects of artisanal and adivasi livelihoods.2 Pastoral lifeworlds, however, have increasingly come to denote a major site of inequality. This inequality—which has structural, historical, and discursive facets—is countered by aspirations and mobilisations oriented toward justice and equality, which repoliticise development and reinvent participatory democracy, to use the language of Sheth (2004: 46). Development is thereby rendered in the lower case by a fundamental and radical critique,3 which is manifest in a range of ecological movements of adivasi and peasant groups, ranging from Narmada’s anti- dam movement in Gujarat to peasant protests over land acquisition by the Tatas in the village of Nandigram in West Bengal. The Gujar mobilisation of 2007-12 represented a similar upsurge of pastoralists, although it was coded around reservation and community. While the agitation achieved a temporary resolution through an order of the Rajasthan state giving five per cent reservation to denotified tribes, the larger predicament of pastoralism remains. This is a predicament that needs to be addressed, given the fact that India has one of the world’s largest nomadic populations, estimated to be seven per cent of the country’s total population, comprising five hundred communities and sustaining a range of animal life.

  • "Denotified" Tribes (Vimukt Jatis) of Punjab (North-West India) and Its Social Implication
Final Report on UGC Major Research Project (MRP) Anthropogenetic Profile of "denotified" Tribes (Vimukt Jatis) of Punjab (North-West India) and its Social Implication (From 01/ 04/ 2013 to 31/ 03/ 2017) Submitted to The University Grants Commission, New Delhi by Prof. (Dr.) S. M .S. Chahal Principal Investigator Department of Human Genetics (earlier Department of Human Biology) Punjabi University, Patiala 147002 (Punjab) "Anthropogenetic Profile of "denotified" Tribes (Vimukt Jatis) of Punjab (North-West India) and its Social Implication" INTRODUCTION The “denotified” tribes, also known as the Vimukt Jatis, are the tribes that were originally listed under the Criminal Tribes Act of 1871, as Criminal Tribes and "addicted to the systematic commission of non-bailable offences." Once a tribe became "notified" as criminal, all its members were required to register with the local magistrate, failing which they would be charged with a crime under the Indian Penal Code. The Act was repealed in August 1949 and former "criminal tribes" were “denotified” in 1952, when the Act was replaced with the Habitual Offenders Act 1952 of Government of India, and in 1961 state governments started releasing lists of such tribes. At the time of the independence in 1947, there were 13 million people in 127 communities who faced constant surveillance, search and arrest without warrant if any member of the group was found outside the prescribed area. The creation of these categories should be seen in the context of colonialism. The British authorities listed them separately by creating a category of castes or tribes labeled as criminal. The first Census of India was conducted in 1871 and at that time there was no consensus or any definition of "tribe".
