After that, my platoon went to Maoz Chaim in the Beit Shan Valley. From there I was sent to a course for squad leaders. I then spent about a year as a squad leader in a platoon in Kibbutz Heftziba. I was just about at the end of my service when I received an invitation to meet Yigal Alon. He did not have to work hard to convince me to join the Naval Company, and that is how I got to the 5 th Course for small boat commanders at Caesarea. During this period I also took part in operations against the British police in the coastal plain region. One thing led to another and I found myself in the course for naval officers at the Technion in Haifa. I ended up in Marseilles in order to accompany Ma’apilim to Palestine. The first vessel that I sailed on, at the beginning of 1947, was the “Ulua”, which became the “Chaim Arlosoroff”, under the command of Lova Eliav.

The hours go by; we must leave tonight. The young captain of the ship, an Israeli, a member of the Hagana - Yitzchak (Ike) Aharonovitz - decides to leave without the pilot, at night, under cover of darkness. On its way the ship runs into a sandbar and with great effort manages to pull itself off and to continue.

We lived in Danzig and the inhabitants of Danzig were German. I studied in a German school and German was my mother tongue. My father came to Palestine in 1932 with a certificate. He came back to Danzig to liquidate his possessions and in 1934 the whole family made Aliya. My father was a Zionist bourgeois and a supporter of Jabotinsky. He registered me to go to a business-oriented high school. While in Danzig and when I was only 8 years old I joined Habonim and when we came to Palestine I joined the Machanot Olim movement. The school I went to was far-right wing oriented and when I expressed my opinions in public they were to the dislike of many, and I was thrown out. I transferred to the Gordon High School which prepared students for the Palestine Matriculation test. I passed this test in June 1940. At this time there was a split in the Machanot Olim; one part supported Mapai and the other part supported Achdut HaAvoda. In August of 1940 I went with a group for training at Kibbutz Yagur. From Yagur I was sent to work in Haifa to support the commune of the leaders of the movement in Haifa. I worked in the port of Haifa building fortifications for the British which were built on the stone breakwaters at the entrance to the harbor.

Giunti a destinazione, inizia l'integrazione ebrea con la gente del luogo, ma sei mesi dopo l'ONU annuncia la spartizione del territorio tra arabi ed ebrei; esplodono insurrezioni e disordini dando inizio così, ad una lunga guerra tra le due etnie "Dieci anni! Sono lunghi se si è morti per la sola famiglia che si ama" La realtà della storia fu un evento fin troppo tragico da com'è raccontato nel romanzo di Leon Uris. Infatti, gli accadimenti dell'epoca riferiscono che la nave Exodus, stipata con cinquemila profughi a bordo provenienti da campi di concentramento tedeschi, fu costretta ad un lungo giro nel Mediterraneo per poi far ritorno in Germania senza mai approdare in Palestina; questo per ordine del protettorato inglese.

Dear Friends, For many generations it has been a Jewish tradition to use the phrase “until 120” when wishing one another longevity. The age of 60 is considered relatively young for people in current times. That said, how young would a country be considered, when at the same age? Well, it would probably be considered a teenager state. We all have great expectations and high aspirations for this child that took 2000 years to conceive. Just like a teenager, its body has not fully developed yet, and it has yet to finalize its curves and features. However, when it is time to reflect on its achievements to date, we most certainly have a lot to be proud of as parents. As we have been preparing for this year long Israel @ 60 experience, planning for the different events, we came to realize the full magnitude of this miracle.
