Adding Dimension to an Elusive Character The figure of Anne Boleyn is one that looms large in history, controversial in her time and today. The second wife of King Henry VIII, she is most well-known for precipitating his break with the Catholic Church in order to marry her. Despite the tremendous efforts King Henry went to in order to marry Anne, a mere three years into their marriage, he sentenced her to death and immediately married another woman. Popular representations of her continue to exist, though most Anne Boleyns in modern depictions are figments of a cultural imagination.1 What is most telling about the way Anne is seen is not that there are so many opinions, but that throughout over 400 years of study, she remains an elusive character to pin down. -

‘Skewed intimacies and subcultural identities: Anne Boleyn and the expression of fealty in a social media forum’ Mickey Mayhew A Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Sociology at London South Bank University Supervisors: Doctor Shaminder Takhar (Director of Studies) and Doctor Jenny Owen Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences, Department of Social Sciences & Department of Media and Cultural Studies, London South Bank University 1 Abstract The aim of this research project was the investigation of a subculture surrounding the famous Tudor queen Anne Boleyn; what that possible subculture means for those involved, and if it constituted part of a new phenomenon of female orientated online subcultures; cybersubcultures. Through the analysis of film, TV, historical literature and fiction, the research illustrates how subcultures are perpetuated through generations cyclically. The research then documents the transition from the traditional or ‘classic’ subcultural model of the 60s to the 21st century cybersubculture and fandom, suggesting a new way of thinking about subcultures in a post-subcultural age. The research suggests that the positioning of Anne Boleyn as a feminist icon/role model, based mainly on a media-mediated image, has formed a subculture which thrives on disjointed imagery and discourse in order to form a subculture of peculiarly subtle resistance. This new cybersubculture reflects the ways in which women are now able to use social media to form communities and to communicate, sharing concerns over men and marriage, all whilst percolating around the media-mediated image of Anne Boleyn as their starting point. These interactions – and the similarities they shared with the ‘classic’ subcultural style - form the data for this research project. -

An Overlooked Connection of Anne Boleyn’s Maid of Honour, Elizabeth Holland, with BL, King’s MS. 9 Sylwia Sobczak Zupanec During their courtship, Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn passed love notes during mass in the royal chapel.1 These romantic notes were inscribed in an illuminated Book of Hours currently stored in the British Library (BL, King’s MS. 9).2 The King chose to put his note in French under the miniature of Christ as the Man of Sorrows kneeling before his tomb and wearing the crown of thorns: If you remember my love in your prayers as strongly as I adore you, I shall hardly be forgotten, for I am yours. As stated in this source, shortly after More’s execution for high treason at the Tower of London (1535), the Emperor Charles V met Thomas Elyot then serving as ambassador at the imperial court. The content of this meeting was later on disclosed by Elyot himself to some members of More’s closest circle, among them Roper himself, whose testimony has remained the ultimate source of the episode. As soon as Charles had come to know about More’s execution, he communicated the news to Elyot and shared with him his admiration for the ex-Chancellor. Several scholars, however, have questioned the reliability of Roper’s memory in the light of historical evidence for Elyot’s whereabouts at the time of More’s death. This paper revises the main stances in the discussion of this episode, and brings into consideration other issues that might cast some light, not only on the details of this story, but also on the relationship between these two Thomases (More and Elyot) and Charles, the most powerful ruler in Europe at the time. Royal Mail's Kings and Queen's Series Enters the Tudor
News Release 2 March 2009 ROYAL MAIL’S KINGS AND QUEEN’S SERIES ENTERS THE TUDOR AGE Royal Mail continues its 600 year journey through history with the second in its Kings and Queens series celebrating the Royal Houses of England. Marking the 500th anniversary of the accession of Henry VIII, The House of Tudor, features individual portraits of the six monarchs who ruled during one of the most famous – and infamous - periods in our history, complemented with a four-stamp Miniature Sheet illustrating significant people and events from the period. The stamps - which are issued on 21 April in three 1st, 62p and 81p pairs - and the Miniature Sheet were designed by Atelier Works who also designed the first of the Kings and Queens issues, the Houses of Lancaster and York, in 2008. From the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485 to the death of Good Queen Bess in 1603, the age of the House of Tudor saw some of our best known kings and queens sit upon the English throne. Marking the end of the Middle Ages and forged in bloodshed, rancour and upheaval at home and abroad, the Tudor age also saw commerce and arts flourish and the introduction of the Renaissance into England. In addition to its regular products Royal Mail is also producing a Cachet Cover, Henry VIII and Elizabeth I Coin Cover and a Press Sheet consisting of 12 uncut Miniature sheets (see Notes to Editors for further information). Deselms: A "Princely Lady" Running head: A PRINCELY LADY 1 Abstract Anne Boleyn (c. 1501 – 1536), the second wife of Henry VIII, was an influential and controversial figure in her time and is the subject of intense debate among historians today, not to mention fascination among the general public. Historians are sharply divided and seek to categorize her as either an early Protestant influential at court (historians such as Ives, Warnicke, and Starkey) or ultimately Catholic and passive (Bernard). This thesis moves beyond such polemics by combining a close analysis of documents from the time and the goals of their authors with post-modern approaches to historical biography emphasizing the fluidity of the self. -

PBS Premiere of Wolf Hall on MASTERPIECE Reaches 4.4 Million Viewers Time-Shifted Viewing Accounts for 43% of Household Audience Boston, MA; April 30, 2015— PBS and WGBH announced today that an average audience of more than 4.4 million people tuned in to the April 5 premiere of Wolf Hall on MASTERPIECE (Nielsen Live +7 data). Time-shifted viewing contributed significantly, accounting for 43 percent of the household audience (2.5 National Household Rating).
