TM® Mantras, Techniques, and Related Methods Please note that none of the text in this PDF file is original. The material was all gathered from other websites. The TM technique is simple mental repetition of a "mantra" or word. The TM movement claims that only specific "words" can be used. They claim that the selection of words is based upon a secret formula. Court documents have shed some light on this "secret" process. It is nothing other than a set of words given out by age, and/or age and sex, depending on the teacher training course the TM teacher attended. The TM-Sidhi program is nothing other than a set of sutras (words or phrases), mentally repeated every fifteen seconds after doing a twenty minute session of TM. Each sutra is repeated twice, with a 15 second pause in between each repetition. • Meeting Adi Shankara Works
Jyotirmaṭha Pīṭhaṃ Trotakacharya (IAST Troţakācārya) (c. 8th century CE) was a disciple of Adi Shankara, the Advaita philosopher. He was made the first Jagadguru (head) of the Jyotirmatha Peetham, the northern matha founded by Adi Shankara near Badrinath. He founded a matha by name Vadakke Matham in Thrissur, Kerala. Meeting Adi Shankara The Mādhavīya Śaṃkaravijayam states that when Adi Shankara was at Sringeri, he met a boy named Giri. Adi Shankara accepted the boy as his disciple. Giri was a hard-working and loyal servant of his Guru, Adi Shankara, though he did not appear bright to the other disciples. One day, Giri was washing his Guru's clothes, when Adi Shankara sat down to begin a lesson on Advaita Vedanta. He however did not start the lesson saying he was waiting for Giri to come back from his chores and singing lessons. At this, Padmapada pointed to a wall and said that it would be the same if Adi Shankara taught to this dumb object as he taught to Giri. Now, Adi Shankara wanted to reward Giri for his loyalty and devotion. Thus he mentally granted Giri the complete knowledge of all the śāstras (sciences). The enlightened Giri composed extempore the Totakashtakam, a Sanskrit poem in the toţaka metre, in praise of the Guru Adi Shankara. Thus the dumb disciple Giri became Totakacharya. • The Ever Growing Banyan Tree
Chapter 2 Spirituality in India: The Ever Growing Banyan Tree Comparing Western and Indian knowledge, Rolland (1960, p. 91) described Western knowledge as the “science of facts” and spirituality as “the science of the soul, a peculiarly Indian science.” A major difference between philosophy and spirituality, or for that matter religion and spirituality, is that spirituality, as prac- ticed in India, has an action bias over and above cognitive (thinking or thoughts) or value (considering something important) concerns. Spirituality has been valued in the Indian culture from time immemorial, and it is no surprise that many innova- tions in the field of spirituality originated in India. Since people strive to excel in areas that are compatible with their cultural values, India has seen the emergence of many geniuses in the field of spirituality even in the modern times. I combine two qualitative methods, historical analysis and case analysis, to document how spirituality is valued in India, and much like a banyan tree, how it continues to grow even today. An examination of the life of the list of spiritual gurus presented in the chapter shows that they were all practitioners, and they practiced what they preached. Also, the case analysis shows that Ramakrishna was a practitioner, and both the Maharishi and Rajneesh recommended daily practice of meditation. A historical evolution of spirituality in India is traced by generating a list of spiritual gurus over the last 2,500 years by using published sources both in the West (Kroeber, 1944) and in India. Following this historical analysis, three case studies are presented to illustrate that spirituality is valued even today in India, and this culture continues to produce eminent spiritual gurus.

India INTRODUCTION Transcendental Meditation (TM) has been a movement which influenced many in the last three decades, some educational institutions in the West have accepted it as a discipline to be taught. In general, TM is one of the dominant strands in the New Age movements. The movement was founded and propelled by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. LIFE OF MAHESH YOGI Mahesh Yogi was born in 1918 in Central India in a Kshatriya caste. he achieved his bachelor‟s degree from Allahabad University. For the next thirteen Years he sought enlightenment under his Gourav Swami Brahmananda Saraswati who was then the. Shankaracharya of jyothirmath. • Jyotirmath Lineage Well, I Think I'm in a Better Position Than Just About Anyone to Summarize the Known Facts Concerning Swam
Jyotirmath Lineage Well, I think I'm in a better position than just about anyone to summarize the known facts concerning Swami Brahmanand's untimely demise. I've read all the pertinent published literature, which I have cited, with copious footnotes, and I've interviewed three direct disciples of Brahmanand Saraswati, one that is still living, Swami Prakashanand Saraswati, who lives at Barsana Dham, one of the largest Hindu temples outside India, which is about a mile from my house. In contrast, nobody else has referenced any published works, named no witnesses, or even spoken to the most famous living disciple. In my opinion, Perino and Vaj are perpetuating political rumors and posting misinformation. There's no evidence that Mahesh Yogi, in a conspiracy with the Jyotirmath ashram cook, murdered Brahmanand by putting poison in his food when he was at Calcutta. That's preposterous on its face! I wonder, where, exactly, do they get their information? I'm still waiting for anyone (and Professor Sawyer) to post a list of works cited. Please post any references to books, newspapers articles, reports, discussions on the internet ‐ any source that would support your position. The facts: In fact, there is no real Shankaracharya of Jyorirmath because that lineage was extinct. The following exchange, which appeared on Usenet and on Yahoo! • Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Jee
His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi jee Maharishi Mahesh Yogi founded and developed the Transcendental Meditation technique and related programs and initiatives, including schools and a university with campuses in the United States and China.[3] He was born in India, in 1917, [1] and around 1939 became a disciple of Swami Brahmananda Saraswati [4] who, from 1941 to 1953, was the Shankaracharya (spiritual leader) of Jyotir Math, located in the Indian Himalayas. Maharishi credits the Shankaracharya with inspiring his teachings. Since his first global tour in 1958,[2] Maharishi's techniques for human development have been taught worldwide.[5]He continues to focus on making all aspects of the Vedic Literature widely available.[3] Since 1990, Maharishi has coordinated his global activities from his residence in Vlodrop, the Netherlands.[4] Early life Maharishi was born to a Hindu family living in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India, and was named Mahesh Prasad Varma at birth.[5] According to Jay Randolph Coplin, the name "Mahesh" indicated that Maharishi came from a Hindu family that worshipped Shiva.[6] Maharishi later earned a degree in physics[7] at Allahabad University. [8] In 1941 Maharishi became a secretary to Swami Brahmananda Saraswati, who gave him the name Bal Brahmacharya Mahesh. Besides indicating his family faith, Coplin [9] says the conferred title "identified him as a dedicated student of spiritual knowledge and life-long celibate ascetic." Maharishi remained with Brahmananda Saraswati until the latter passed away in 1953. Although Maharishi was a close disciple, he could not be the Shankaracharya's spiritual successor since he was not of the Brahmin caste.
