JANUARY 23/24, 2021 Our Lady of Piat, Patroness of Cagayan Valley, Philippines I was introduced to Our Lady of Piat back in 1978 on a vacation to the Cagayan Valley with my family. In a little town called Piat, we visited a small chapel built on a cliff overlooking the Cagayan River. On the main altar was a familiar statue of Our Lady of the Rosary, wearing a Rosary and holding the baby Jesus, also with a rosary. The skin color is dark brown, and Mother and Child are each holding a bouquet of flowers and what appears like a small cloth bundle. The statue was made of paper mache. One of the women in the chapel told me this story: There was a flood and the whole valley was inundated. As the waters receded the townspeople saw a wooden crate caught on the branch of a tall tree. Inside the crate was this statue, dry and intact. A small chapel was built on that cliff and people came to visit and pray. Healings and divine signs were reported. Soon the chapel and the town became too small for the influx of devotees with their petitions and coming back reporting stories of restored health, deliverance from mishaps, success in stud- ies, bountiful harvests, help during flooding and drought seasons, and other endeavors. The priest decided to move the statue to a bigger church in the neighboring city. It was a big event and many people came to join the procession. The statue was brought out of the chapel and a long line of people followed. Halfway approaching the city there was commotion and screaming at the tail end of the procession. Water was following them. The Cagayan River have risen up the cliff and started flooding the town. As the procession turned back the water receded. And so the statue was returned to its original site. Through the years the chapel building (and the town) grew and transformed with the fame of the miraculous statue. It’s now a designated Basilica minore, and Piat is dubbed as the Pilgrimage Center of Cagayan Valley. The official history of the statue tells how it was brought by the Dominican friars in 1604. It was originally called Nuestra Senora del Santisimo Rosario (Our Lady of the Holy Rosary). From Manila it was brought to Caga- yan to evangelize the “Itawis”, the native people of the province.
