Steven Van Zandt to Join SIRIUS Programming Team Steven Van Zandt To Join SIRIUS Programming Team Van Zandt Will Serve As Creative Advisor, Launch “Underground Garage”Stream On 100% Commercial- Free Satellite Radio Service CES, LAS VEGAS & NEW YORK – January 6, 2004 – Celebrated musician, actor, and syndicated radio producer Steven Van Zandt has joined the SIRIUS Satellite Radio programming staff as Creative Advisor. Van Zandt will create and program "Underground Garage," an exclusive, fulltime stream for SIRIUS that will debut later this year. He will also produce and host other SIRIUS shows and serve as advisor on select other SIRIUS streams. Van Zandt is a pivotal figure in the current rock and roll revival. His internationally syndicated, two-hour radio show, Little Steven’s Underground Garage, reaches nearly a million commercial radio listeners every week. Rolling Stone summed it up as "Mind blowingly great." The show, credited with spurring a major resurgence in garage rock, is now carried on over 130 stations in the U.S. and Canada, and 43 countries through the Voice of America. Garage Rock, as Van Zandt describes it, is back-to-basics rock 'n' roll "with a direct connection to the '60s." Some celebrated garage rock artists through the ages include the Yardbirds, Animals, Kinks, Electric Prunes, Easybeats, Ramones, and more recently, The Hives, White Stripes and The Strokes. "SIRIUS is about passion and respect for the music, and I can’t think of anyone who has more passion and respect for music than Steven," said Joseph P. Clayton, President and Chief Executive Officer, SIRIUS. "Steven will contribute a lifetime’s-worth of sage music experience to the SIRIUS programmers. And, as an accomplished musician, radio programmer and DJ he’ll create an appealing 24/7 rock format that isn’t available anywhere else." "I am honored to be part of the SIRIUS Satellite family," says Van Zandt. "Choice is what freedom is all about and SIRIUS broadcasting an additional 100 channels of music and talk on top of what terrestrial radio already offers can only be a good thing. SIRIUS will be making history by our channel being the only traditional rock and roll format in the country playing new music. All other new music channels or stations are hard rock, hip hop, or pop music based. The potential synergy between my syndicated show on terrestrial radio and the 24-hour Underground Garage format on SIRIUS will be tremendous. The Rock and Roll Revolution is on!" Van Zandt recently completed a 15-month worldwide tour with Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, of which he is a founding member. In addition to his career with the E Street Band, he has released five solo CDs. One of his compositions, "Affection" – a track from an unreleased album by his garage rock band The Lost Boys -- can be found on The Sopranos' second soundtrack CD, Peppers and Eggs. He is also an accomplished record producer and songwriter. Throughout the 1980s Van Zandt traveled the world to further the cause of human rights. He spearheaded the widely acclaimed anti-apartheid Sun City project and he established the Solidarity Foundation in 1985 to support the sovereignty of indigenous peoples. Van Zandt was honored twice by the United Nations for his human rights efforts. More recently he has earned acting acclaim as Silvio Dante, one of Tony Soprano’s henchmen on The Sopranos. Bit scary and I would say a number of you may have to go through beginner lessons again and also wear name tags lol. On the 9th of May the national association had their AGM with a number of clubs from throughout New Zealand that were involved. First time ever we had to run the meeting through zoom so talking to 40 odd people from around the country was quite weird but it worked. A number of remits were discussed and voted on with a collection of changes mostly good but a few I didn’t agree with but you all can see it all on the association website if you are interested in looking . Also senior and junior nationals were voted on where they should be hosted and that is also advertised on their website. Juniors next year will be in Porirua and Seniors will be in Wanganui.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE INTRODUCING GRACE’S ROCKIN’ ROLL ADVENTURE FEATURING ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAMER LITTLE STEVEN VAN ZANDT A NEW BOOK THAT USES MUSIC TO EMPOWER TEACHERS AND INSPIRE YOUNG STUDENTS IN READING, SCIENCE, AND MATH --Book and accompanying “STEAM” Lesson Plan Launched as Part of Rock and Roll Forever Foundation’s K-12 TeachRock Initiative --- New York, NY (October XX) – Grace’s Rockin’ Roll Adventure, a new children’s book featuring the characters from The Musical Adventures of Grace series accompanied by rock star and actor Steven Van Zandt, connects music and early elementary reading, science, and math. Developed as a partnership between TeachRock.org, the main initiative of Van Zandt’s Rock and Roll Forever Foundation, and author Ken Korber’s Center for Functional Learning, the book also features an accompanying lesson plan that engages the youngest learners in a fun, music-filled “STEAM” (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) project. Grace’s Rockin’ Roll Adventure is currently being piloted in TeachRock Partner Schools and select school systems in New York, New Jersey, California, and Illinois. In the book, the 9th in the Musical Adventures of Grace Series, Grace and her classmates win a contest to attend a Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul concert—a realistic plot considering that during his 2018 Teacher Solidarity Tour, Van Zandt gifted tickets to nearly 10,000 students and teachers nationwide. Invigorated by the music, Grace approaches Van Zandt, who bequeaths an instrument, setting the young musician on a rock and roll adventure with her classmates. In the accompanying workbook, real-life students learn about the various shapes in guitar designs, and ultimately combine music, math, art, and geometry to create a two- dimensional instrument of their own.

Each state‘s relative share of these programs is described. The geographic themes, patterns, and images from these programs are analyzed, with an emphasis on identity in five American regions: the Mid-Atlantic, New England, the Midwest, the South, and the West. The dissertation concludes with a comparison of television‘s senses of place to those described in previous studies of regional identity. iii For Sue iv CONTENTS List of Tables vi Acknowledgments vii 1. Catherine Johnson TELE-BRANDING IN TVIII The network as brand and the programme as brand In the era of TVIII, characterised by deregulation, multimedia conglomeration, expansion and increased competition, branding has emerged as a central industrial practice. Focusing on the case of HBO, a particularly successful brand in TVIII, this paper argues that branding can be understood not simply as a feature of television networks, but also as a characteristic of television programmes. It begins by examining how the network as brand is constructed and conveyed to the consumer through the use of logos, slogans and programmes. The role of programmes in the construction of brand identity is then complicated by examining the sale of programmes abroad, where programmes can be seen to contribute to the brand identity of more than one network. The paper then goes on to examine programme merchandising, an increasingly central strategy in TVIII. Through an analysis of different merchandising strategies the paper argues that programmes have come to act as brands in their own right, and demonstrates that the academic study of branding not only reveals the development of new industrial practices, but also offers a way of understanding the television programme and its consumption by viewers in a period when the texts of television are increasingly extended across a range of media platforms. TVIII, at least at this juncture, must be considered the age of brand marketing. (Rogers et al. 2002, p. 48) ‘Branding’ has emerged as a central concern of the television industry in the age of digital convergence. 38/ Pere Antoni Pons The everydayness of power The West Wing If the effect is the same as what happens with me, after seeing any average-quality chapter of The West Wing (1999-2006) the reader-spectator will think he or she is witnessing an incontrovertible landmark in the latest phase of audiovisual narrative. After viewing one of the more dazzling, memorable episodes, he or she will not hesitate to believe that this is to behold one of the major, most perfect intellectual and artistic events of the early twenty-first century, comparable —not only in creative virtuosity but also in meaning, magnitude and scope— with Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, Shakespeare’s tragedies, Balzac’s The Human Comedy, or the complete recordings of Bob Dylan. Over the top? Even with more rotund words, it would be no exaggeration. Nowadays, nobody can ignore the fact that a colossal explosion in quality has happened over the last decade in the universe of American TV series. The old idea according to which the hapless professionals —scriptwriters, actors and directors— the ones who lack the luck or talent to carve out a niche in Hollywood or to triumph in the world of cinema, have to work in television has now been so thoroughly debunked that it even seems to have been turned on its head. Administration of Barack Obama, 2016 Remarks on Presenting the Presidential Medal of Freedom November 22, 2016 The President. Thank you. Everybody, please have a seat. We've got some work to do here. [Laughter] This is not all fun and games. [Laughter] Welcome to the White House, everybody. Today we celebrate extraordinary Americans who have lifted our spirits, strengthened our Union, pushed us toward progress. I always love doing this event, but this is a particularly impressive class. [Laughter] We've got innovators and artists, public servants, rabble rousers, athletes, renowned character actors, like the guy from "Space Jam." [Laughter] We pay tribute to those distinguished individuals with our Nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Now, let me tell you a little bit about each of them. First, we came close to missing out on a Bill and Melinda Gates's incredible partnership. Because apparently Bill's opening line was, "Do you want to go out 2 weeks from this coming Saturday?" [Laughter] I mean, he's good with computers, but—[laughter]. Fortunately, Melinda believes in second chances. And the world is better for it. For two decades, the Gates Foundation has worked to provide lifesaving medical care to millions, boosting clean water supplies, improving education for our children, rallying aggressive international action on climate change, cutting childhood mortality in half. The list could go on. These two have donated more money to charitable causes than anyone ever. Many years ago, Melinda's mom told her an old saying: "To know that even one life has breathed easier because you lived, that is success." And by this and just about any other measure, few in human history have been more successful than these two impatient optimists.

  • Control Issues: Binge-Watching, Channel-Surfing and Cultural Value
. Volume 16, Issue 2 November 2019 Control Issues: Binge-watching, channel-surfing and cultural value Mareike Jenner, Anglia Ruskin University, UK Abstract: This article explores binge-watching as part of neoliberal discourses surrounding control, class and ‘good’ television, which leads to an overall discourse concerning the legitimation and de-legitimation of the medium. Binge-watching is understood here as part of a continuum of viewing practices that help us to understand and discuss the medium in popular discourse. As historical precedent, the emphasis lies on channel-surfing to illustrate the intersection of technology, control and ‘good’ television. This article outlines some of the discourses at stake in channel-surfing and its relationship with remote controls as these ancillary technologies move from being devices associated with avoiding ‘bad’ television to devices that subjugate viewers. Such a discursive de-legitimation of a viewing practice interlinks with an overall de-legitimation of the medium. This precedent is indicative of the way binge-watching’s cultural positioning has been negotiated throughout its history and may be re-negotiated now, especially in relation to Netflix. The dynamics of this negotiation take place at the intersection of class, technology, viewing practices and ‘good’ or ‘quality’ television. In the course of promoting The Innocents (Netflix, 2018- ) in 2018, Guy Pearce stated that he was instructed by Netflix not to use the term binge-watching. This led to an immense amount of press coverage and speculation over company policy. Particularly telling is a Yahoo! Finance piece written by Andy Meek (2018) that speculates that the practice of binge-watching has become ‘low-brow’ and Netflix is seeking to extricate itself from these associations, possibly in advance of launching a more ‘elite’ version of its service in the US.

  • One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and Their Fans
One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and their Fans Annie Lyons TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin December 2020 __________________________________________ Renita Coleman Department of Journalism Supervising Professor __________________________________________ Hannah Lewis Department of Musicology Second Reader 2 ABSTRACT Author: Annie Lyons Title: One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and their Fans Supervising Professors: Renita Coleman, Ph.D. Hannah Lewis, Ph.D. Boy bands have long been disparaged in music journalism settings, largely in part to their close association with hordes of screaming teenage and prepubescent girls. As rock journalism evolved in the 1960s and 1970s, so did two dismissive and misogynistic stereotypes about female fans: groupies and teenyboppers (Coates, 2003). While groupies were scorned in rock circles for their perceived hypersexuality, teenyboppers, who we can consider an umbrella term including boy band fanbases, were defined by a lack of sexuality and viewed as shallow, immature and prone to hysteria, and ridiculed as hall markers of bad taste, despite being driving forces in commercial markets (Ewens, 2020; Sherman, 2020). Similarly, boy bands have been disdained for their perceived femininity and viewed as inauthentic compared to “real” artists— namely, hypermasculine male rock artists. While the boy band genre has evolved and experienced different eras, depictions of both the bands and their fans have stagnated in media, relying on these old stereotypes (Duffett, 2012). This paper aimed to investigate to what extent modern boy bands are portrayed differently from non-boy bands in music journalism through a quantitative content analysis coding articles for certain tropes and themes.

RECORD DREAMS 50 Hallucinations and Visions of Rare and Strange Vinyl Vinyl, to: vb. A neologism that describes the process of immersing yourself in an antique playback format, often to the point of obsession - i.e. I’m going to vinyl at Utrecht, I may be gone a long time. Or: I vinyled so hard that my bank balance has gone up the wazoo. The end result of vinyling is a record collection, which is defned as a bad idea (hoarding, duplicating, upgrading) often turned into a good idea (a saleable archive). If you’re reading this, you’ve gone down the rabbit hole like the rest of us. What is record collecting? Is it a doomed yet psychologically powerful wish to recapture that frst thrill of adolescent recognition or is it a quite understandable impulse to preserve and enjoy totemic artefacts from the frst - perhaps the only - great age of a truly mass art form, a mass youth culture? Fingering a particularly juicy 45 by the Stooges, Sweet or Sylvester, you could be forgiven for answering: fuck it, let’s boogie! But, you know, you’re here and so are we so, to quote Double Dee and Steinski, what does it all mean? Are you looking for - to take a few possibles - Kate Bush picture discs, early 80s Japanese synth on the Vanity label, European Led Zeppelin 45’s (because of course they did not deign to release singles in the UK), or vastly overpriced and not so good druggy LPs from the psychedelic fatso’s stall (Rainbow Ffolly, we salute you)? Or are you just drifting, browsing, going where the mood and the vinyl takes you? That’s where Utrecht scores.
